Norcross ‘late bloomer’ Hubbard covered up with offers

11:44 am November 9, 2009, by Chip Towers

The college football coach that ends up with Adrian Hubbard on his team come national signing day in February will need to send a thank you note to senior class at Norcross High School.

Why? Because, ultimately, they were the ones that allowed Hubbard to return to the football field after a year’s hiatus. And now, the 6-foot-7, 227-pound defensive end/tight end is one of the unexpected grand prizes in Atlanta’s recruiting class of 2010.

Hubbard is a rarity in the modern age of college football recruiting. That is, he came into his senior year a virtual unknown. Hubbard played football as a sophomore at Peachtree Ridge but he transferred to Norcross as a junior in order to play basketball for the Blue Devils. He did not play football.

This past summer, Hubbard came to coach Keith Maloof and told him that he missed the game and wished to come out for the team. You could only imagine Maloof’s delight as he stared up at the at the towering athletic figure. But he did not accept Hubbard’s request on the spot. He put it to a vote of his seniors.

“He said he really wanted to play football, that he missed it more than he thought he would,” Maloof recounted recently. “So I told him I’d have to ask my seniors. They’d worked hard for four years and all of the sudden you’re coming in. So I’ll have to talk to them.”

The seniors, most of whom already knew Hubbard, gave him unanimous approval.

“Kids know if somebody’s a good kid or not,” Maloof said. “They just know. So they let him come out.”

Said Hubbard: “I always loved football. I don’t know why I stopped playing it. I just told Coach Maloof how I felt about the situation and I was blessed enough to be allowed back on the team.”

Hubbard and about 15 major college football programs are eternally grateful. That’s about how many scholarship offers have come Hubbard’s way, most of them late in the year.

“The latest offers I’ve had are from Alabama, FSU and Auburn,” Hubbard said on Sunday. “Georgia offered me on Thursday.”

Georgia? The team that already has commitments from five defensive ends?

“Yes, sir,” Hubbard said. “I hadn’t really heard from them in a while. But I’m sure they’re like most colleges and gave most of their offers out before the season. I’m a late bloomer, so I’m guessing one of their prospects didn’t meet requirements of the SAT or something and the offer came. I think they probably wanted to offer me before but they couldn’t. . . . I don’t hold it against them. I’m opened to everybody. I’m looking at all of them and having fun with it.

He’s also holding offers from North Carolina, South Carolina, N.C. State, Clemson and Maryland, among others.

“It goes on and on and on,” Maloof said. “He’s a 6-7, 227-pound athlete that runs a 4.4 and he’s had a great year at defensive end. So opportunities have come to his door and I’m excited for him. He’s a great kid and he’s been fun to coach. I wish I had coached him for four years.”

And a lot of folks hope they have him for the next four. Hubbard went on an unofficial visit to Alabama for the LSU game this past Saturday. He’s heading up to South Carolina for a second time this coming weekend for the Gamecocks’ game against Florida. That will be an official visit. He’s already been up to Maryland and Vanderbilt.

Hubbard said he plans to take all five of his official visits, with Alabama and FSU definitely on the list but not yet set up. He hasn’t decided who will get the other two. He said he will make his final decision public at the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 2 in Orlando.

What will be the deciding factors?

“The school has to have my major (forensics and/or criminal justice),” he said. “And what other kinds of kids am I going to be surrounded with, how will I fit in with the school, the people that go there, my teammates and coaches? Mostly I’m looking for a winning tradition. I like that atmosphere.”
Was gonna post about this kid yesterday, but glad I waited for this article to help put things in a better perspective.

He has busted on the scene big time as of late, and while some teams like Alabama and FSU offered him recently, the fact that Georgia offered really caught my eye considering how they've recruited DEs lately and have so many in this class.

He's got some developing to do in technique and physically, as he's really raw. But its obvious from film and certainly by his recent offers from Southern schools that he is someone to watch out for during this process and over his career.

Little Air McNair Chooses Southern Miss

To say that it's been a difficult year for Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, Miss.) receiver Steve McNair, Jr. would be an understatement.

Through all the adversity, McNair tuned to the game that made his father a household name as an outlet.

McNair will trade his Warrior Black and Gold for Eagle Black and Gold. "He's had a great year," said Oak Grove head coach Nevil Barr. "When we've needed a big play, he's been there to make it: offense, defense, special teams."

Along the way McNair has taken the recruiting process in stride picking up more than a dozen offers from programs such as Minnesota, Mississippi, Miss State, Nebraska, Southern Miss, West Virginia and more.

Today he announced his decision.

"I'm going to Southern Miss," McNair said. "It's close to home and my family and my coaches can all come and see me play every week."

Although his father didn't play at Southern Miss there's always been a connection between the McNair family, the community and the hometown school.

Annually, the McNair Foundation hosts a free football camp on the campus of Southern Miss and Steve was often seen in and around town during the off-season.

The younger McNair is one of the top prospects in the state having been named to the prestigious Dandy Dozen team earlier this year.

He has helped his Oak Grove Warriors to a 6-2 record on the year and close out their regular season on Friday night at Jim Hill (Jackson, Miss.) and are likely playoff bound.

He's been a leader for the Warriors both on and off the field.

"Everyone loves Steve," Barr said. "He's a special kid. He's always smiling and that's not always been easy this year. It doesn't matter who you are on our team, Steve treats all the guys the same."

When asked how he liked the Warriors chances in the playoffs McNair said with a smile.

"We've got a great shot."

The nation's top running back prospect, Michael Dyer (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Christian), committed to Auburn on Friday morning during a press conference at his school.

"There has been a lot of talk and I am here to clear it up," Dyer said. "Today is the day I announce where I am going and (Auburn University) is where I decided. I want to be a part of the team and try to build a life there. Auburn is where I want to be at."

There were reports earlier this week that Dyer would commit to Auburn, but that it would be a soft commit and he would continue to take visits. While he left the door open for visits, it isn't a done deal that he will take any more.

Where do you think he will attend? He's committing next weekend if I'm not mistaken.

Answer: Auburn. Not like wee need him, though, considering we have Goodwin & Richardson coming in

Trovon Reed and Lache Seastrunk have been close friends for a long time. So close, that they consider each other brothers.

They grew up together in Louisiana but with Seastrunk now in Temple, Tex., the pair has now found a new way to connect -- recruiting.

Reed was again impressed with his trip to Auburn. For the second time in the last couple of months both Reed and Seastrunk were in Auburn for an unofficial visit.

And once again, the Tigers made quite an impression, this time with their Big Cat Weekend that included pie eating contests, video game challenges and a big celebration at Toomer's Corner.

Reed was especially impressed with his Saturday night trip to Toomer's to witness one of AU's best traditions.

"It was nice," Reed said. "I've never experienced stuff like this before. I thought it was just going to be recruits but then I looked down the street and saw everybody. I got excited.

"It just lets you know the fans love you. You can't beat that."

Reed said he and Seastrunk both gave the weekend two thumbs up.

"I've had fun but I've never had fun like this," Reed said.

Reed, rated a four-star and the nation's No. 2 wide receiver, has a long list of offers and is not ready to name any favorites. But Auburn clearly made a big impression.

"I really don't have a list but Auburn is high on my mind," he said.

There's one other thing on Reed's mind and that's the opportunity of playing in college together with Seastrunk, who is rated a five-star and the nation's No. 1 running back.

In fact, Reed appears to be set on the idea.

"We talk about going to school together all the time. It's going to happen," he said.

On one of Reed’s trips to Auburn this year, the senior was on I-85 North between Montgomery and Auburn. He could feel he was getting closer to the Plains. Reed said that he couldn’t believe the feeling he was having at the time. He said it felt like he was going home.

According to one of Auburn’s top commitments, “We talk and text all the time. Me and Trovon are like family.” When I told the commitment that I heard Reed could be getting close to committing, and it would be to Auburn, the commitment replied, “Tell me something I don’t know.”
