Auburn Our Defensive Scheme
Well, I don't like to get too mad at coaching, but I think Chizik needs to take more charge of the defense and play a scheme more like our 2004 defensive plan...

Here's a few things I've noticed:
  • Pass Rush

What pass rush? We usually rush just four men and when we rush more it seems like they come in slow motion and don't go for the qb at all. I can understand keeping one guy back to read the QB and bat the ball down, but not all of them. We need to take a lesson from (I don't wanna say it...) Saban and start getting some good rushing schemes.

  • Cornerback play

They play too far away from the receivers... We have allowed way too many 7 yard receptions that go for 15+ yards because we play too far off and, as a result, get in poor position to make a play on the ball or the receiver.

  • Linebackers

This is one area where out depth really affects us. Unfortunately we don't have the players to have a top 10 linebacking core, but we could be better than we are. We should be letting our linebackers go for the QB and make more aggressive plays...

Just my 3 cents... Thoughts?

I agree with most of what you have said but please remember, at the start of the year it was said by Coach Chizik we are very thin on defence. I think this is just becoming evident. Coach Roof has his work cut out for him coaching young players up or players who is starting for their first time this season. To me the jury is still out on Coach Roof, if he is not at Auburn next year then he was not up to standard for Coach Chizik. If he is still there next year then we will see what kind of coach he is with some of his own recruits. Anyway you are correct, our defence sucked Saturday and I truly hope it is better against the Cats Saturday or we may have a long day again.
WDE!!!

I agree on most of that as well. However, I think most of our defensive struggles are due to lack of depth and experience. Plain and simple. Yea, I was pretty pissed at Roof for a little while until I realized what he had to work with. They only brought 4, yes 4, linebackers to the Arky game.

I think once Roof gets the guys he wants in, then we will really see that aggressiveness that we are used to. But right now, because of depth, we really do have to limit our aggressiveness or else we will wind up putting players where they have never played before. That would be a bad thing.

a good DL can get a consistent pass rush with 4. If you need more than 4 you're sacrificing coverage.

ever heard of zone coverage? It all depends on scheme. Maybe they're going more zone cause they don't want to get beat deep 1 on 1.

If you let your LBs go after the QB 2 things happen. You open up the middle/flats for screens and your LBs get tired quicker. Which you don't want since you're thin at LB.

We have 2 decent lb's and thats it. If you go back to the Arkansas game they killed us running and passing where the lb's were suppose to be. Adam Herring sucks and Freeman is another Blackmon. We need to recruit every lb we can for next year. I can't blame Roof yet.
Catch me if you can

I agree with Crusty that Chizik could take notes from Saban. He is a defensive GURU...

Auburn
After listening to Coach Chiziks locker room comments after the game I bet the few defencive players we have will have their heads screwed on right for the game Saturday against Kentucky. This morning is the first time I have head him say they had a "great" practice the day before. 1st team offence against 1st team defence.

Yes I feel that Kentucky might have to pay the price for saturday's butt whooping. I think our players got the big head and it cost them.

Well I know, but sometimes you have to bring 5 and that helps you get pressure + confuse the D.
