THE MISSING 'BRINK'
South Carolina's defense wasn't quite the same last year after linebacker Jasper Brinkley suffered a season-ending knee injury during the fourth game. Here's a look at the Gamecocks' defensive statistics in the four games Brinkley played and during the rest of the season:

Category Yards per game Points per game Record
With Brinkley ____320.0 14.3 3-1
Without Brinkley __407.0 28.3 3-5

He is a stud. I just hope that he can stay healthy this year and go on to have a great NFL future.

Both Jasper and Eric will be Monsters of the Midway this season, the biggest LB tandem in all of college football.

They eat SEC QB's for breakfast, and crap SEC TE's in the afternoon.....

This is, by far, the deepest defensive team I can ever remember. Several of the backups would be starters on other SEC teams.

Our special teams finally have their own coach and he's taking it very seriously.

Beecher is a redshirt junior. Although he's had almost no game day experience, he knows the play book, has the physical ability, and intelligence to surprise people.

Our OL finally has some confidence due to their experience and depth. It's not about who do we have that can try to play this or that position. Now it's competitive.

McKinley will break alot of receiving records for us this year and at least one or two other WR's will emerge as household names. Our TE's will be a serious threat and, if the OL can protect Beecher, then our offense will be productive. Btw, our offense was productive last year, even playing musical chairs with the QB's and with a sub par OL. We lost, primarily, due to a porous run defense and breakdowns on special teams.

Bottom-line: We've addressed key weaknesses and our new DC brings a fresh perspective that has no promises to fulfill to recruits that don't perform. I honestly believe that Nix was too close to some on defense and wasn't tough enough to bench them when they missed assignments. He bet it all on Brinkley and got lax. When Brinkley went down, Nix got the ax.

Guys with last name Brinkley = reason SC beat UGA last year.

(que obligatory post on UGA not wanting both of them.......)
