View Full Version : Spurrier here to stay

Spurrier just said in his presser he'll be here at least 5 more seasons and more than likely beyond that. He added that he shot the same score at Lake Tahoe in 1990 that he shot last week. Said the only reason he turned over some play calling duty to Junior was because he wants to spend more time with the QB's. He said he feels the same today as he did when he was in his 40's. This is great news for Gamecock football.

Extremley great news.
Everything must be going well. :D
I also like the fact that he said he is getting 100% attendance from the new recruits.

I really feel that the main purpose of this presser was to let everyone know he's not going anywhere. There has been a lot negative recruiting (particularly from Clemson) saying that things like "well he's got one foot out the door". I think this goes a long way to debunking that.

We've seen quite a few on here insinuate the same thing (in red above).
It's good to hear him come on board and reiterate that he's in it for the long haul. Some fans may not like him for whatever reasons (arrogant, speaks whatever is on his mind, runs up the score occasionally, etc.), but Spurrier has always proven he's a man of his word. There's no guarantees, but I'll take his word for it over anyone else at this point.

Good news for GameCocks...bad news for the rest of us...:(
Color me surprised...I never ever thought that Spurs would turn into another Bowden/Paterno...coaching into his 70's....nothing to do with where he's coaching, mind you...heck, if I were a coach, SC would be a great place to grow some roots...although, I'm partial to Gainesville.;)

The Clemson coaches are a bunch of freakin' liars...and the queen of the liars Tammy Bowden learned from the best. I hope he goes down in flames this season...starting with an ass-whipping from the Tide.

Spurrier also said that he never gave play calling duties over to his son. Said Bubba will have a huge role in making the game plan, but that the original Spurrier will be calling the plays.
The question is; do you really WANT him there in 5 years?

Of course. Why wouldn't any USC fans? They've done pretty well considering where he had to start; and he's said this will be the first year where he's had a full compliment of his own players to work with. I think the REAL question is: Do YOU want him there for the next 5 years? Nevermind... I know the answer to that question.;) Anybody who doesn't consider him one of the best 10 coaches in the country needs to have their head examined. If he had never went to the pros, and was coaching at any of the powerhouses in college football, he'd likely have enough rings to make his knuckles drag the ground... he's already wearing 7.

What reason would he have to lie? He has no roots here. He has no official loyalty to this university. He's already a legend. He could just ride off into the sunset no worse for wear. He has absolutely nothing to gain by lying.

Another point he made in the presser yesterday was just how bare the cupboard really was when he got here. Since we've been in the SEC, this is far and away the most depth across the board we've ever had. His one big mistake was saying we were ready to compete last year. Most objective observers stated '09 and '10 would be the first years we would really make some noise. I think we'll have a 7-5 or 8-4 season this year and then come back stronger in '09.

I'm really pleased that Spurrier is staying; he's not only good for South Carolina, but he is good for the whole SEC. I love to watch him coach. He's always 100% into the game; a real competitor, and you know when you are watching him that you are seeing one of the best to ever grace the sidelines. Great news, for sure.

Is it great news? Four years and Steve has yet to show the nation a great QB. Man, even I thought Spur would have had at least one in fours years in Columbia.
In all seriousness, will gamecock fans continue to support this staff for four more seasons if Spurrier and crew continue to finish fourth in the SEC East and 7-5 records?
What's in a name guys, Move on. Don't settle for a washed up HC. This is a young mans job in this day and age. Steve said it himself at Media Days recently.
IMO the huge fan base of football hungary loonatics deserve more, The time is now guys.

Spurrier's not having a QB is troubling but not completely his fault. He recruited an enormously talented QB in Garcia and he has yet to play a down at Carolina. Sometimes you hit a homerun and sometimes they don't pan out when it comes to recruits.
As for our fanbase constantly taking 7-5 seasons, that won't happen. Most of us feel the Gamecocks should win 8-9 this year, personally I think 9-3 and an outback bowl appearance, but we'll see...

I would like to ask GC fans something else. Most of you this year doesn't expect a 6-6 season from the GCs this season. Starting on October 18th and ending on November 8th, you guys have a three game home stands. In all honesty, how do you think you will do in that run of LSU, Tennessee and Arkansas. Most of the national media are saying 1-2. I'm gathering you see it different.

No problem. I still stand by my original statement....satisfied with 2-1, not so satisfied with 1-2 (or worse). All three of those games are home games, so I believe we should expect 2 of 3.

I respect your opinion GAMECOCK_FAN, you sir are no young punk shooting his mouth off. Being a guy that has been around a while, I'm guess in your 48 years above earth you have seen a lot from your Gamecocks.
I'll tell you lad, in my 51 years of following football, I have to be shown if you are a team worth talking about. And in my dealings with South Carolina since we both join the SEC a number of years ago, I haven't been convinced as of yet that Steve can turn it around in Columbia. Last years team was probably better than the record at seasons end showed. But midway through the season the Cocks lost all heart. And that is the coaches fault. If he can't instill passion and desire into a team, nobody else can.
So until i see for myself that in fact the Gamecocks are bigger and better than ever as Steve pointed out to the media last week, I'm sticking to my guns like your sticking to yours. Maybe you can prove me wrong. I know the fans deserve better than .500.

No, we wont settle for 4 more seasons of being 4th in the East and 7-5 records.
But you say that like it has been like that ever since Spurrier arrived in Cola. His 1st year he only won 7 games(because of a total defensive collapse in the bowl game). Still, that included wins over UT and UF. In his second year he won more games but didnt have that substantial win other than his win over chumpson. In his third year he started out 6-1 until a few key defensive injuries ruined what we were riding on and costs us our team strength.
With a better coached and more disciplined defense and special teams we should expect good things. Defense and special teams cost us the UT game. Special teams cost us the chumpson game. Defense cost us the Ark game. If we can get those things straightened out we should be alright and start to continue our trend of improving our number of wins every season.
Actually, even though our offense hasnt been that great it hasnt cost us many games. Other than the Vandy game of last year I cant think of a single game that was lost due to the offense during the Spurrier Era. Our schedule finally stacks up favorable for us this year and I would be surprised if we dont win 9 games(bowl game included) in 2008. Before we get LSU at home theres only one game that we have a good shot at losing. Of course with our extremely tough closing stretch its easy to finish on a downward note...but I'd theres a great chance we finish with at least 9 wins in the 08-08 season.

You obviously didnt keep up with the injuries on defense that we sustained last year. This year we will have more depth and talent than last years squad along with a new DC that has done a LOT more with a LOT less at MSU.
Also, I would like to know what makes you think that Ole Miss will beat the Gamecocks this season.

Honestly I had to really think about that match-up. My reasoning is because of the Gamecocks coming off back to back wins against less talented teams, they hit their first real road test in Oxford.
With Ole Miss coming off a loss in Gainsville and knowing the road is going to get tougher, Nutt has had great success against the Gamecocks in years past while at Arkansas.
It's a swing game for me, but I gave the edge to ole Miss. I feel over-all the talent on the line matches up better than South Carolina.
Note: I also had to study the Kentucky match-up. I gave that benefit to the Cocks. So don't think I'm picking on you cocky4ever.

USC has a chance to win all 3 games, but we could also lose all 3. At best, IMO, I think we'll persevere against UT, and win 2-1. The scores will most likely be some thing like:
USC: 31 UT: 27
USC: 68 AR: 3
USC: 28 UF: 35

I wouldn't really say that it's Nutt that has the Gamecocks number, it was McFadden. Nutt is 2-2 in the last four games against the Cocks. McFadden was the one that ran down our throats.
As far as the Ole Miss-USC game, I definatley feel that's a trap game for us just like Vandy was last year. I do believe our talent level is higher, but a lot of people are definately underestimating Ole Miss this year. That is their homecoming game too (if I'm not mistaken). I still see us winning it though. It'll be a close game.
And you mentioned our teams heart a couple of posts above. I don't feel like we lost heart at all. We overlooked Vandy and played with no emotion in that game, but in the Tennessee game (last weekend in Oct.) last year we came back from a 21-0 defecit at half time. We outgained them 531-317 in yards with over 200 yards in the 3rd qtr. It takes a lot of heart to do that. We also staged a (sort of) come back against Arkansas (I believe we were down 28-10). It was a 6 point game with 8 minutes to go last year (until McFadden went 80 yards untouched). We also played with heart against Clemson. We stop them on 4th and 6 and we win the game. But because of injuries we had a 5'9 freshman covering Clemson's number one 6'3 receiver. Our main problem last year was lack of depth on defense and when the injury bug came along we suffered big time.

Fair enough. At this point in the preseason thats as good of a logic as I've seen in evaluation of outcomes. Even though I disagree with that prediction I cant say I dont understand your reasoning.
Still, I dont think Ole Miss has the talent(and yes, I did slightly feel like a UGA or UF A-hole while typing that) or the coaching staff to match up with us. Plus we still have that little safety on the 3 yard line that was called against us way back when that we need to even the score for. Oh, dont think we've forgotten. Our players werent around for that game but trust me...there are fans who havent forgotten that call and are ready to see us beat the crap out of an Ole Miss team. I've been waiting to see them rotate back onto our schedule and anything less than a 2-0 record for the Gamecocks during that stretch will be unsatisfactorily for me.

SEC fans hear these repeated excuses each football season for Gamecock fan. This is the way it suppose to be done.
I love my team, We are in a rebuilding year and with a totally new look in our offensive scheme, I hope we can catch some more experienced teams off balance. Worst case scenario for Arkansas, 2-10. Best case scenario 7-5. I see us to play hard for our new staff and improve with each passing week. And playing so much youth by the end of the season, we hope to gain confidence and upset Mississippi and LSU to finish with momentum heading in to 2009 season. I honestly thing we will be 4-8 in 2008. And we will be in several games in the 4th quarter, but due to youth in mid season, we will lose those close one due to being on the road. Youth + road games = Losses
If some of people would exercise your predictions in this manner, maybe fans would take you more seriously. Don't turn into Alabama fans that are so blind with pure homer ignorance.

You've made a good point. Injuries, ect. are all part of the game of football and things that we must take into account when making our predictions. South Carolina must earn the respect. Each year we come out of the gate saying 9-3, 8-4, etc. Our team doesn't seem to deliver.
That being said, my prediction last year was 9-3. It's not like we were blown out in the games that we lost. I honestly believe we had a talented enough team to go 9-3. We gave a game to Tennessee and to Clemson (which would've made us 8-4). But like I said we have to stop making excuses and start earning the respect. I honestly do believe South Carolina will turn the corner this season and go 9-3. Sure 7-5 and even 6-6 could be the result. Bottom line is until our team starts earning respect we're never gonna get it from opposing fans, etc. Your point is well taken.

You say he was 5'9' tall, he is listed at 5'8" and he doesn't look that tall to me. He is more like 5'7". The Captain at 5'9" makes him look short. Either way it was a complete mismatch, however, I fault the D. coach for not putting someone else on Kelly, hell they threw to him 4 times in a row.

I agree...he was actually in my English class first semester last year. I've never heard a stadium so loud before and during a play and so silent after the play. There are so many 3rd and longs and 4th and longs that Nix's defenses NEVER could stop.
1st and 39 against Clemson in 2005 on Clemson's go-ahead TD scoring drive
3rd and 19 against UGA in 2005 inside UGA's own 10 yard line in the 4th qtr
multiple 3rd and longs against #2 Auburn in 2006
a 3rd and long (I think 16) against Arkansas in 2006 with under 5 minutes ago
3rd and 23 against Clemson in 2007 (with 2 minutes to go)
This is just the list that I can remember, I'm sure there were more...thank god for Ellis Johnson!!!!
