View Full Version : Anyone Know Why COL K Was Banned?
GAMECOCK_FAN

I just noticed that our beloved Colonel Kurtz has been banned. I've had a couple of run-ins with COL K (as most of us old timers have at one time or another), but I have no idea why he was banned. I pulled up his post history and read his last few posts, but saw nothing significant enough to warrant a banning (unless I missed something).
None of the mods/admins really owe us an explanation (unless they want), but the question will come up eventually, I'm sure.

I didn't realize he'd been banned. Best news I've heard all day. I never saw him do anything that warranted a banning, but I can't say I'll miss him, though I'm sure some will. To each his own, I suppose.

Um I think in the heat of an argument we have all said worse than that. I don't see anyone being so tender hearted that they banned someone for the dumbass remark.
I'm sure it was something a little more involved than that.

I'm gonna take the staff's word on this one. They've been pretty chill since they've taken over and allowed the board to continue on like it always has, even allowing the old banned members a second chance. I feel pretty sure that Kurtzie didn't go down without a few choice words.
I'll miss the old guy, he always brought the high heat in debates. Or threw it in the eighth row, take your pick.

Hey mods! I'm sure you don't want to go into the C Kurtz thing, but what are the things that you think people are most likely to think that they can get away with that will get them banned.
Hypothetically, if a super moderator was repeatedly making really blind and weak posts could I call him out, or would I be better off acting like I didn't notice the multitude and respond to them one by one?

I've had so many battles with the Colonel that some may be surprised to know that I actually like him. We almost always view social/political issues differently, but he has always been an aggressive, yet worthy adversary. I hate to see him banned, but those of us who know him probably realize that he could easily respond to an admin's warning with the same kind of spiteful tone that he is famous for. Most of the time, I had no problem with him. I'd like to see him back here, but I do trust that those in charge have made a reasonable decision. However reasonable, I do hope that his banning is not permanent. While things are obviously more chippy with the old man around, they are also a lot more interesting.

Couldn't have said it better myself!! ;) I too had many differing opinions than did Kurtzy, but I always respected the hell out of the guy because regardless of how flawed I felt his view was, there was ALWAYS substance and a base to his opinion and argument and he was passionate about that of which he spoke of. Regardless of which side of the argument you were on, Kurtzy represented the element of substance beyond the 90% of mindless banter which keeps/kept us old timers coming here. This board is a MUCH BETTER place WITH him than without him! I too hope his banning is temporary....VERY temporary.
Now, I really hope this isn't a case of the substitute teacher punishing the class clown due to a lack of understanding. I/we know how the Col loves to push those buttons and isn't about to back down from anyone regardless of implied consequences. I just hope the mod/mods are keeping things in perspective and monitoring the pressure gauges of their egos. This site saw a mass exodus of VERY SOLID posters a few years back due to the mods' inflated egos and paper thin skin.... I sincerely hope history is not repeating itself!! :(

OK...since we're going to speak out in the open, then let's get into specifics! I'm sure that most everybody operates under the same thought that if they "air their laundry" in private, it's assumed that it's done with no jeopardy. Well, that's kind of the thing... the mods will warn you when you're starting to stray. I don't know all the details, either; but, I know GH, and can pretty much promise the colonel wasn't banned out of nowhere suddenly, and without warning. The only people that get banned like that are spammers and people trying to create new accounts and slip back in after getting banned, i.e. CAD.
But, for future reference, here's a pretty good rule of thumb: If a mod PM's you, and says you're beginning to test the TOS, it's definitely not in your best interests to then insult a guy who could've hit you with an infraction rather than a warning. If you've already warranted an infraction, and you get one, don't turn it into a ban by acting the fool. Virtually everybody gets an infraction sooner or later, and they expire... this isn't like the criminal justice system where your felonies will follow you around inevitably. Most of the folks I know who've gotten an infraction have only gotten the one... then they figure out what's going on, and act accordingly.
Then there are the folks who can't act their age or IQ... or maybe they are, who knows. The point is, very few folks get banned; and even fewer, like none, get banned for doing nothing. Personally, I had been getting along with CK lately, and hadn't had any run-ins with him at all. But, that hasn't always been the case; and maybe he went too far this time. Since GH is one of the more docile, grounded, and respected members of this forum; and has been around moderating ever since I joined this site, I have to defer to his judgement. I've never known it to be rash, unfair, biased, or questionable. Period.

I was here in 2005 and remember Dudeman...what I've written is nothing like him. I've simply stated TOS.
And you're right...it's a message board with simple easy to follow rules. IMO, a poster has to "try" to get banned. It's not something any of us takes lightly and you can better believe if a poster gets banned...there's a good reason.

DJ and Baller, if anyone is to know about bannings it is probably you two. You were both given second (probably third or fourth) chances so you know that the staff isn't just a hate filled bunch of idiots who ban people because they think it is funny. We are actually trying to improve the site, believe it or not. If one of us thinks that a certain action has to be taken for the majority of the members to continue civilized debate, then that action has to be taken.. not to mention if the action is in response to a direct violation of the rules set for the members on this site.
You have my word on a few things:
1) Colonel Kurtz violated some of the rules of this site.
2) He was warned several times after initial offenses.
3) He chose not to adhere to the warnings and correct his mistakes.
4) Most of the active members would agree with the decision if the offense was made known.
I don't know what else to say.. if we allow people to post whatever they want, there are going to be about 9 members on the site.
I've come to the conclusion that CK did something bad enough to get banned. Don't know what it was, don't care. I'm not going to stand up for the guy, he never did anything to warrant me standing up for him now. He wouldn't stand up for me. (cue D3) What the mods say is good enough for me. It happens to a lot of people and they have to live with it.
I'm sure he'll get over it eventually and create another account months from now. And this will all go away.
Wow... good job of sucking up to the mods for banning a guy that coincidentally happened to be one of the guys that routinely puts you in your place.
Oh, and wipe that stuff off your chin, would ya?

Before I edited your post, it was a fine example of one that I would PM somebody for, to remind them that we don't allow profanity on the site. Now, those rules have been relaxed somewhat to allow for certain words that aren't always profane in nature, like Hell; but, you can't spell out BS or FU... UF is fine, as long as you can spell it.;)
In any event, the members of this site continue to come here because it's less like some of the other adolescent-dominated sites where anything goes. In this particular case, you're not even privy to all the details of what happened; and are therefore not qualified to judge whether or not it was warranted.
And, what Beeds and others are doing is jumping ON the SECTalk ship... only the children are jumping ship, because they can't have their way, and follow a few simple rules. Benny is right... without moderation and administration, very little constructive and informative debate would take place here; and this would be just like any number of other shouting match sites for the short-bus crowd. We like some trash-talk, too, just like anybody else; but, as in any other aspect of life, there are limits, members know what they are, and we'll remind them when they forget.
It's just not a good idea to ban one of the few on here who actually has brains & is interesting. I almost never agree with Kurtz, however he actually brought substance to this board and other boards he is/was on. The more "talent" you remove from this site the more diluted it becomes with ppl who are: a. not funny b. not witty c. not smart (but of course everyone here believes that they are smart and can post links to prove it!!) I don't know how else to say it, but kicking Kurtz off hurts the site. Posters like him are what WOULD'VE separated sectalk.com from other plain white bread sports sites. We don't all need to hold hands and kiss. I have no idea why in 2008 America the men are all metrosexual, hall-mark cardesque, lifetime channel watching, napoleon dynamite quoting little girls. So what, a smarter, more knowledgable poster disagrees with you, that's tough. It's life. He was endowed with a better set of genes (intellectually anyways), let's encourage the use of that instead of the way america is going now (which is towing the company line). Free thought anybody?? Or is that a concept that died when Generation X was born........?

I don't like it anymore than you do but I also am privy to details that you aren't. Also, I've talked with Kurtz on another site and it is highly unlikely that he would ever come back even if he were unbanned. He's a man with a considerable amount of pride and I think no matter what happens with his situation here, he is unlikely to return.

RW...I totally respect your opinion. You are one of the few posters that have been here longer than me and you of all people know how this site has evolved. However, just because you "like" a poster...or he/she has well thought, intellectual posts...doesn't mean that poster is above the rules. I'll say it one last time...he chose this path...not me or any other mod or admin.

Some months ago, I remember reading your posts on another site and all you did was talk trash about this site and the mods. How you had a ton of posts and rep and then you were wrongfully banned. Yeah im sure you did nothing to warrant that.
Its funny how some of you get your panties in a wad, leave the site or get banned, and complain over at another site about how the mods here are like nazis. All the while most of you would want to come back here. Its like rats jumping off of a ship, only the ship isnt sinking. In fact, its the best ship anywhere, and when the rats realize they cant find anything better, they all swim back.
Where are you guys going to go this time? There is no SECillustrated any more and that was the only other decent non-homer site around.
Do some of you really think that CK was banned just b/c he had a different opinion than a mod? Do you really think that there isnt even a slight chance that CK may have insulted someone personally and resorted to name calling?
Anyone who has to resort to name calling and personal insults, just b/c they run into confrontation or disagree with someone on a message board, is really lacking in social skills and class IMO.
Kudos to all the Mods and Admins who are keeping this place civil during what I thought would be a rough transition and not letting it turn into a typical teenage name calling forum. Kudos to the new owners as well, you guys have exceeded my expectations:thumpsup:

I, like Beeds, am privy to what the Colonel said. Guys the banning was justified, plain and simple. I like the site better with him here, but I don't think anyone can legitimately call into question GH's judgment on this one. You'll have to trust the staff on that one.
Now, if members want to make pleas on his behalf, then so be it. But, I don't think it is fair to assume that he did nothing worthy of banning when all of us know how the Colonel can be. When he is good, he is as good as anyone here. When he is bad, he is the worst. He got banned for the later part.

I think you and some others are missing the point! "lacking in social skills and class" are NOT valid reasons to justify banning someone. Hell, there'd be VERY few posters on this board if that was a prerequisite! :D
Furthermore, I have ZERO doubt that CK resorted to personal insults and name calling. I guarantee he did! The next person that tells me that they haven't been a "victim" of such from CK will be the first! ;) I also have every bit of confidence that if I were a Mod and I PM'd CK telling him to back off the language or insults that I would get a response full of insults and bad language. I would expect this because I have been here long enough to KNOW what to expect and CK has been here long enough that you'd know what to expect. Now, I'm not condoning this, but I also feel very strongly that since CK had been allowed to be here so long "being himself" that he felt like everyone understood that he was all bark and no bight.
As far as "getting panties in a wad", that's exactly why some us old timers are so upset. Why this particular instance and why now?? He'd been allowed to attack folks personally for years...and in the forum at that. But now we're to believe that he did/said something unacceptable and worthy of a ban in a PM?? Oh, OK!! You see what I mean?? Someone got their panties in a wad all right.... that I completely agree with!! But the bottom line is you can say that CK acted in a juvenile and immature manner all you want, just don't expect me to also buy or believe that the immature and juvenile reaction was somehow justified.
Look....it's over and done with and life goes on. CK wouldn't EVER come back here at this point anyway, and frankly I don't blame him one bit. Just stop insulting us by going to the TOS card and trying to justify the banning as some sort of act to insure and promote civility....because it's CRAP and we all know it!! Good God, we could go through CK's posts over the years and probably find hundreds of examples where he violated the TOS and resorted to personal attacks. But he somehow crossed the line this time?? I don't/wouldn't want this board to be "governed" by black and white rules, but you folks in charge really should choose one way or the other and let us all know which it is and to whom they pertain to.
Like I said, it's over with and this will be my last post on the issue. We lost some awesome posters a few years back because of poor moderating and we've now lost another due to the same. I realize that it's not always easy to be the bigger person 100% of the time and to keep things in perspective, but hopefully this incident will serve as a reminder of the negative effects of not doing so. Nice final post on the subject Hunter, and you made good points. Well said. Still they are still tones of,
We have a secret......and ......We're not telling....
It's that sort of thing that makes most of us a bit uncomfortable by some of the authority in here. Hell, I don't have a problem with Moderators doing their jobs, just do it without acting as if you have something over us. I recall several times which a member would simply ask a question over a members banning, and the reply he would get to his question was something sharp like, We'll look into it. Real CIA/FBI path IMO.
I'm in no way signaling you out for doing these practices but just making a point as a hole in general. Like some posters, certain moderator are also a different breed of animal here. And We have to make the proper adjustments to better understand them.
Because of my pass dealings in the matter I found it offensive and thought the staff member was more or less showing his authority and power to do away with me because he decided to take the "Because I said so" approach. And that reasoning alone is enough to rile anyone enough to say or do things he regrets later. In my case, it was like being poked with a stick. Just to get a negative reaction with me.
As the older members here can attest to, I'm not the same hothead I once was after being poked with the matrix stick. I have since learn to play with the other kids on the monkey bars and now all is well on the playground. Hopefully with a brief timeout and perhaps a administrator making the first move to extend a olive branch, we may be lucky enough to save yet another long time contributor of this joint and all can save face in the matter.
I'll close by saying, I think both members and Moderators have come a long way in recent years. It now seems that, both can now exist and better communicate much more than ever before. Please don't return to the [B]Cop walking the beat/B] mentality. Looking for trouble and using your stick, no doubt, you'll find it. I have heard more than once since the peaceful takeover that the goals are to better this site for the future. What better way than to start by investigating this case deeper and deciding if this long time member is worth losing.

What kind of board is it. Bible study group or cross titch knitting party? Hell feller its a jungle in here. If we don't get enough enforcement in here someone might steal something from the front desk. Then we're screw. It will snow ball from there.
