Best Offensive Coordinator
Gary Crowton - LSU
Crowton is one of the brightest offensive minds in the nation and has a brilliant track record, dating back to his head coaching days at Louisiana Tech. With the offensive talent at LSU, look for Crowton's creative mind to light up the score board and pile up the yardage. The QB situation is much better than people realize, and both Lee and Hatch will do well under Crowton's tutelage.
Best Defensive Coordinator
Charlie Strong - Florida
Strong has consistently made the Gator defense one of the most effective and feared in the SEC. He uses the talent well and can always be depended upon to field a defense that will be worrisome to everyone that the Gators play.

I'll put Kevin Steele up against anybody in the country. Steele will be mentioned in every head coach search for the next 6 months. Don't be surprised if lands a head coach job right here in the SEC.

At the risk of sounding like a Gamecock hater. I am suprised to see Mr. 3rd and 23 Charlie Strong your pick for the best DC.
When UF had a loaded Dline they made him look good but last year with young, but 4 and 5 star players on the field the defense was a complete liabilty last season. I mean UF gave up 30 to eveyone on the schedule last year right???

Top Offense
Joker Phillips -UK
Top Defense
Ellis Johnson -SC

OC- Bobby Petrino, Arkansas
Although the numbers might not be as high in year one under Petrino as they were last year, the offense will be more balanced and therefore just as good. Petrino will bring in loads of skill players to fit in his system
DC-Willie Martinez, Georgia
Georgia has had a solid defense for years now. This unit brings their lunch box to work everyday. Martinez has some very aggressive blitz packages that have proved to be rather effective. I look for this to be one of the SEC's top units

Ellis Johnson -SC
Maybe I am the only Bama fan that did not like Ellis Johnson as a defensive coordinator. I have never thought he was all that great. He was very average for us, but to each there own. I do know he had a good year last year.
For me I would take
Offense--Gary Crowten
Defense--Kevin Steele. (btw, last year this would not have been my answer considering how many good DCs were in the conference and now have gone on to other jobs)

Your second pick is a little questionable, because of last year..

If Will Muschamp or Bo Pelini were still at their respective schools, they would of been the obvious choices. However, they are not.

Ah the coined saying from UGA fans. "Just wait" or "Next Year!" :D
Sorry, I don't believe the guy is very good. He throws WAY incredibly too many screens and has a very predictable offense. I'd wait before I'd throw a guy like that onto a list of "best" OCs, he really hasn't earned it yet.

Understandable. Charlie is a bit of a stretch, but so many good defensive coordinators left (Muschamp, Pelini), he seems to be one of the better ones left. Admittedly, though, he has had some problem years, and some problem opponents.

He's had top notch defenses at Florida in 2005 and 2006. Only last year was there a noticeable dropoff, and it was only the passing defense, the rushing defense was still great. The passing defense could be attributed a lot towards extreme youth in the secondary.
2/3 years for Strong vs. 0/2 for Bobo
Tough Choice?

I'm sorry... are you comparing a defensive coordinator to an offensive one? Yeah, that makes sense.
I'm confused why you would say Bobo has not had a good year play-calling. I'm interested in knowing what last year was, if it was not successful. I would not yet list him as one of the best in the SEC, but his results are nothing to scoff at.

Look who I was responding to. He said "so bobo's name should not be mentioned but charlie strong?". My last part was simply saying Strong, under Meyer, has had 2/3 very good defenses. While Bobo, under Richt, has had 0/2 very good offenses. It's not tough to comprehend.
Bobo throws way too many screens (way, WAY too many). His play-calling has gotten repetitive and predictable. He's not one of the Top OC in the SEC.

And Strong under Meyer has beaten you 2 out of 3 times (both times when he had top notch defenses)...

Those screen passes were because we were starting 4 freshman on the Offensive line. Stafford didn't have TIME in the pocket to do anything else. If you were aware of this, you would have noticed how much the playbook opened up over time, whereas early in the season you didn't see many deep passing plays at all. This wasn't a result of Bobo not having more, it was simply because the line couldn't hold long enough to run anything.
I see who you were replying to, but his logic was that if Bobo isn't worthy of a mention, how is Strong? Because Bobo is not the best OC in the conference, just as Strong is not the best DC.

Bobo has only been calling plays for one full year. He only called plays for three games in 2006.

Since you noticed the favoring of screens last season, care to wonder WHY?
Doing with what you got is Coaching, getting them to work as a unit and excel is the job of a Coordinator. Bobo isn't the sexy choice but he'll evolve right along with his Offense, which is mostly underclassmen anyway.
I'd give the nod right now to Dan Mullen of UF as the Gators have been the most prolific with the ball since Meyer arrived.
Defense, I'd give our guy Martinez a vote since both the guys ahead of him, Pellini and Muschamp left.

With the relocation of defensive coordinators, it should be a wait and see who may turn out to be the best. I think Ellis Johnson and Tyrone Nix are going to be good examples of this.
Johnson had an overachieving squad with some ballhawking DBs and tons of speed off the end at State. Lucky for him he'll get at least one of those in the Gamecock secondary with players such as Munnerlyn and Cook.
Nix's defense tended to be fantastic for about five games and then injuries and other things caused them to go to the wayside halfway through. He'll have a stronger DL in Oxford but the secondary is substantially weaker, at least on paper.

The damn moron who kept Bama in the game by passing the ball every down even after 3 interceptions and when you guys were gaining 5-6 yards running the ball every time?
Or... was that your retard head coach making the calls?

Although he's yet to prove himself thus far in the SEC, Tony Franklin is an offensive genius. Auburn will have at LEAST the #3 offense in the SEC this season.
As for DC, I hated to see Joe Kines go. He was the only one worth mentioning.

Top Offense
Joker Phillips -UK
Top Defense
Ellis Johnson -SC
I don't see how anyone can disagree with this choice. With one exception, Joker Phillips did it with very good talent in the kep positions. Can he do it from scratch now.
I'm wondering if Petrino can make an impact in the SEC. he is look upon as a great offensive mind, But can it be successful in the best defensive conference in America?
As far as Ellis Johnson goes. This in my opinion was one of the nations top hires last year that really wasn't talked enough on the national scale. If Ellis can bring that "Sudden Impact" Mississippi State defense that they are known for to Columbia, the SEC East better look out in 2009. The gamecocks may end up in a bowl at 7-5.
Cock fans, I'll trade you one Willy Roberson for one Ellis Johnson. And I'll throw in a Play by play man for free. What ya say?

I'm gonna make a futuristic prediction and say that the Tony Franklin Project will be a rousing success at Auburn. I'll also say that if Paul Rhodes can do to our top notch Defense what he managed to show at Pitt against WVU(yes I know it was just 1 game but damn wasn't that one of the best defensive shutdowns of a team that we saw last season?), then we'll be in very good shape this season and especially come 2009.

Ok, but you can't explain away Rhodes' success. Whinny at Pitt simply held back his true potential(something that he will reach at AU under Tubbs).
I'll take Joker Phillips and Willie Martinez.
Excellent nominations. Phillips is a guy who doesn't get much love because he's at UK, but their offense was tremendous last year because of him.

Again, you haven't seen Franklin call 1 damned game for Auburn yet... where does this prediction draw its basis from?
Top SEC offenses this year:
1. Florida
2. Georgia
3. _________ <--- who knows who could end up here, but how can you say at this point that it will be Auburn? This could be Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina, UT, etc.... I think saying Auburn will have at LEAST the #3 offense this year, is grossly premature.
Clay Fulmer

Call me a homer, but John Chavis mus get at least a mention. Sure, he had a bad 2007, but by year-end they were pretty strong. Otherwise his defenses have been solid to spectacular. Even in 2005, the Vols' defense was extremely good. I've seen at least a couple posts recently noting the 1998 defense as one of the top in the SEC's modern era. If anything, he's a bad recruiter, and that's why UT has had a poor defensive line in the last one to two years. But as a coordinator, I don't think I would want anyone else.

Leaving out LSU is a huge mistake considering Gary Crowton is calling the offenisve plays. He took an offense last year that lost a first round QB, two first round WRs and two contributing RBs and made it immensely better enough to be #2 i nthe SEC behind Florida.
