I think it's funny how there is no backing in this short, one paragraphed blog stating WHY such a bold prediction is being made. I guess crazier things have happened but I don't know what's funnier, this or the bottom of my sig. Wouldn't get my hopes up too high Gumps'.

Bama has just as good of a shot at the SECW as that miserable cow college in west Georgia.

BTW, I could start quoting all the dumbass things you say in my signature but unfortunately there's a character limit. Plus, it's retarded.

I agree with that statement 100%. I think Auburn has growing pains this year. JMO.

Being this isn't the trash talk forum, I'm not going to respond how I usually would. However, with this thread being based on something that has no backing to it what so ever, I have questions.

Coming off a 7-6 season that included one big win and an even bigger loss, how is Bama all of a sudden have just a good of shot at the West as an established Auburn?

Got recruits?

Can't deny the great recruiting class but common sense says it won't kick in until another year or so. Meanwhile Bama does have some skill players but the established SEC teams has skill players and depth do go behind them. I just don't see 18 year olds filling all of Bama's lack of depth.

Do you stand behind the bottom of my sig?

Auburn had growing pains last year and still managed a respectable record against a damn tough road schedule. This year is different because it's an even year meaning LSU and UGA (the big two) come to J-H, along with Tenn. Meanwhile Bama has all three of those games on the road. Like I said, crazier things have happened but let's get real here.

I think Bama will pull some games out and make gradual process this coming season but I just don't understand why some think they will be on the same level of top-tier SEC teams and REALLY have a chance to win the west.

I don't think you can say they had growing pains last year. More the pain of having a crappy Quarterback.

Auburn 1999: 5-6
Auburn 2000: 9-4; SEC West Champs

Arkansas 2005: 4-7
Arkansas 2006: 10-4; SEC West Champs

Stranger things have happened than for a 7-6 team to turn around and win their division the next season.

The running game wasn't nearly as strong as it usually is due to mainly a freshman o-line (growing pains). Good thing it's a promising o-line with awesome potential. :D

As for Cox, mixed emotions come into play for me. Too many ups and downs in his career to be called consistent but I will never forget the highlights of his career, that's for sure. That being said, I think it's a good time for a new QB to come in and run CTF's spread which could lead to a big jolt on offense. Burns or Todd, take your pick.

Let's not forget the defense is coming off yet another strong season. I see it no different going into this year. Auburn has established itself on defense for a while now which if more evidence to why thinking Auburn will not have a serious chance at the west and the SEC, is truly idiotic.

I find it crazy that anyone would just disregard Alabama as having a shot at the West and not some super long shot either. The 3 main contenders in the West are.Bama,Auburn,LSU State should also get a hard look.

looking at the position breakdown

QB-Bama-Aub-LSU
RB-Bama-Aub-LSU
WR-LSU-Bama-Aub
OL-Bama-LSU-Aub (yeah yeah Iknow but the LSU line and the Bama line are that close Auburn is just a hair behind)

DL-LSU-Bama-Aub
LB-Aub-LSU-Bama
DB-Aub-Bama-LSU

K-Bama-Aub-LSU
P-I have no idea but my guess would be Aub-Bama-LSU
KR-LSU-Bama-Aub
PR-Bama-LSU-Aub

Now Bama proably plays the tuffer of the sch between all 3 schools.

Just a couple of questions....

RB-Bama-Aub-LSU

How would you rank Bama's RB better then ours?
2007
Gant 891 yards
Coffee 561 yards
UpChurch 248 yards

Tate 903 yards
Lester 530 yards
Fannin 448 yards

Gant went down with a unjury and Lester missed half the season with a suspension.

Then you ranked Bama's D-Line above ours?

Marks made alot of preseason All-American teams and Colemen and Carter are both mentioned alot. My point is I guess, is that I have seen no one talking about your front three.

Not that any of this matters. Just asking....

I would change a few around but not bad. Anybody has a shot, but our shot may not be as good as auburns or lsu's. But if App. state can beat michigan and several #1 teams lose in the regular season then surely Bama can win the west.

Can Alabama win the west? yes. They have the depth to do so. The thing is their schedule. They have a lot of road games and everyone knows those aren't easy especially in the SEC. I don't see Alabama being a big threat. I have been wrong before, so who knows.

Ok to question #1 about the runningbacks I was under the impression Fannin was now a WR and true Lester did miss half the season But Grant was injuried for 11.5 of Bama's game in 2007 and Coffee was suspended for almost half of Alabama's season. But at any rate given what we know about the 2 backfeilds and what they accomplished in 2007 the numbers are very close while Auburn had overall more yards by like 90 for the year Alabama held a a better yards per carry.I simple looked at what was returning and what is missing on the 2008 squads.Grant healthy since vandy gives Bama a boost plus a Coffee getting to play a full year helps too.Throw in Upchurch,Lowe, and a RS freshman that has a chance to make a impact in Goode Bama's TB unit is very deep if not unhearlded.

As far as question 2 the DL,I'm always a bit confused when people are taken aback when I say Bama's line is not as bad as people think. In 2007 they had more sacks and alot more Tackles behind the line than Auburn and they return everyone but one player that even took a snap in 2007 along the entire DLine. They shot from #12 in the SEC in sacks and TFL in 2006 to Roughly #5 in the SEC in 2007 using alot of underclassmen. The only thing Bama doesnt have along the Line right now is a big name.Forget the inc freshman Bama has some nice talent at the Ends and Nose Guard that are just mere Sophs and my guess is this line is much improved over the 07 line and it wouldnt be suprising to see the Bama line hit mid 30's in sacks this year.

Do you stand behind the bottom of my sig?

Not really sure why you care but absolutely, I stand behind everything I say with the exception of a few random jabs I take at LSU or the barn every now and then. JPW demonstrated that he has the ability to win (UT) or lose (LSU) games last year and I dont think this year will be any different. Honestly, the same could probably be said for a few QB's in the West, teams that are strong in almost every other position except QB. I think you are reading too deep into my post though, I'm just saying that other than some needed depth at LB, I believe Bama is strong enough to compete with everybody else in the West if (and that's a big IF) JPW can do his thing. If he doesnt, it's probably 2007 all over again.

BTW, before anybody says "it takes more than one person to win a football game", I'm well aware of that but as close as we all are in the SEC, QB play can make all the difference.

If JPW has the year of his life, then Bama could very well win the west. If he plays as inconsistently as he has his entire career, then no way. You guys will win some games you lost last year (AU?) and lose some you won (UT). JMO.

I'm not really even sure why everyone is thinking they are going to be so good. I just don't see it. They looked good in their bowl game, but the season is loooong and I don't think they will be on the same page til the second half of it.

I agree with you with all the rankings except these 2. We are possibly last on the RB. Does that mean we have scrub RBs? heck no, but compared to the depth and talent of both LSU and Auburn's RBs we're not there yet.

Also, the DL, we lost Gilberry, who had the most sacks BY FAR among the linemen. After Gilberry, the stats dropoff dramatically, I think the second most sack leader had 3? Don't remember. Auburn may have lost Groves, but Senderrick (sp?) Marks and Antonio Coleman are beasts at end and will keep tackles busy.

Auburn is prime to lose the Iron Bowl this year? Could be true that the offense won't really catch on until the second half of the year but the Iron Bowl is the last regular season game. Therefor the spread could be hitting all cylinders by November. Your the man occh but I'm not following you here.
