View Full Version : Three reason you will and won't win the conference this year.....

UGA
Will:
1. Defense plays as well or better than they did the final seven games of last season.
2. Either a couple of veteran WRs have a breakthrough year or the two hyped true freshman live up to the billing early.
3. Young OL continues improvement and replaces two seniors without missing a beat.
Won't
1. Schedule, no reason to really belabor this point. Well documented.
2. Blair Walsh, freshman kicker, can't do it in front of 90,000. That's the problem we had with our last scholly FGK signed out of high school.
3. Stafford can't improve much on his season from last year. Not a bad year, but we'll need a little more for an SEC run IMO.

Will
1) Our defense truly is as good as advertised.
2) Our QB play doesn't have to be spectacular. Whichever guy is under center just needs to manage the game and not make boneheaded mistakes.
3) Our running game needs to be a significant factor. We've been near the bottom of the conference in rushing offense for a while now. A large part of this has to do with the O-line. If the line can step up, our backs are good enough to do some damage. Can we have 4 reasons?
Won't
1) We create large holes for us to dig ourselves out of early in games.
2) We can't settle on a QB to be our main guy. I hate shuffling QBs in and out during games. It just seems like it would be hard for any guy to get into a rhythm.
3) Significant injuries.

UT
We will win the division because:
1. Crompton flourishes in a new offensive scheme
2. The secondary led by Eric Berry creates big plays
3. Arian Foster has a dominant year
We won't
1. Tim Tebow
2. Knowshon Moreno
3. The offense has a slow start picking up the new scheme and loses to Florida and Auburn in September.

Gators:
Will:
1. Tebow, Harvin, Thompson, Rainey, Hernandez, Ingram, Murphy, Cooper, Moore, Williams and Moody...all are dangerous threats offensively...too bad we can't have them all on the field at the same time.
2. Defense improves...coaching changes are as good as advertised. DL and Secondary are improved...3rd down conversions limited and the offense actually gets on the field more than twice per quarter.
3. Did I mention Tebow, Harvin, Thompson, Rainey, Hernandez, Ingram, Murphy, Cooper, Moore, Williams and Moody?
Won't:
1. Defense.
2. Defense.
3. Defense.
It all comes down to...you guessed it, defense. If our defense can improve "slightly"...the Gators are gonna be tough to beat. Lost 4 games by a combined 25 points...offensive was the most prolific in the SEC...despite the fact that we had one of the lowest "time-of-possession" averages in the SEC...imagine what the Gator offense would be capable of if our defense could give us more chances?

Will:
1. Our Offensive Line gives twice as many sacks as last season
2. Our Secondary picks up the pieces from the shallow depth of our Defensive Line
3. Daniel Lincoln makes a few extra kicks when they count the most
Won't
1. Our Defensive Line can't do it's job
2. No receiver breaks out as the deep-threat
3. KPD/UTPD

Time of possession normally goes hand in hand with your running game. Also think that Fla's biggest question and the biggest improvement will be if they can find a consistent running game and then the defense will magically get better b/c they won't have to stay on the field all the time. BTW, will Moody transfer again if it doesn't work out at fla? I'd pick Rainey over Moody anyday.

WILL
1. We will have the most experienced QB in the west... even if his name is John Parker
2. Our O-Line will be one of the best not only in the SEC but the nation...
3. Were running the 3-4 next season and have a linebacking corp that may be the most vicious in the league
WONT
1. Our quarterback is John Parker
2. Our recieving corp will be really young and untested for the most part... though the star's name is Julio
3. We play in Knoxville, Athens, and Baton Rouge
ill even add this to the Will side...
If we can use our true freshman the correct way we will be a lot better than redshirting them all and trying to have another rebuilding year... we got talent, we need to use them

UT will:
1. Much improved pressure from our front means we won't have to blitz so much.
2. New offensive coordinator Dave Clawson matches Cutcliffe's attention to detail, but adds great playcalling into the mix.
3. Crompton has the kind of production and leadership that was expected of him when he was rated as one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country.
UT won't:
1. Injuries occur to our starters on the defensive line.
2. We look overmatched talent-wise against east brethren, UGA and UF.
3. Breakdowns in punt and kick coverage continue to plague us.
By the way, excellent topic.

Mississippi State will:
1) Defense doesn't skip a beat
2) Anthony Johnson is somehow able to play next fall
3) Offense gets a lot better
won't:
1) Offense plays at a less than good level
2) Defense plays at a less than great level
3) Injuries

Will:
1. Clawson does as advertised and gets the ball in the play makers hands while constantly confusing the defense with a lot of different formations and motions.
2. Defensive line depth improves throughout the season while the secondary shines.
3. Dennis Rogan creates big plays in the kicking while our special teams learns how to cover kicks and punts consistently.
Won't:
1. Gerogia and Florida are both ranked in the top 5 and are both more talented than UT.
2. Injuries specifically in the defensive line.
3. Crompton does not play as advertised.

UH...the Gators "running game" was 3rd best in the SEC...and the 2nd best team, LSU, averaged less than 14 more yds per game. Our TOP had nothing to do with not being able to convert 3rd downs on offense and certainly had nothing to do with our run game...BTW, Gators were #1 in the SEC in 3rd down conversions, so...again...my point being, our problems are associated with a defense that couldn't get opposing offenses off the field.
I doubt Moody will transfer again because he's burned his RS year...and he would lose a year of eligibility giving him only 1 season at another school.
As far as Rainey...I'm excited about him, too. He is more of a playmaker than Moody...but Moody is bigger and more of a "every play" kinda back. They're different types of players...so comparing the two is moot.

Will:
1. the moon is in the seventh house and jupiter aligns with mars
2. CBS and ESPN highly discourage (read: ban) the use of the word "celebration" at the WLOCP, er, I mean Georgia/Florida game.
3. Coach Richt bitch slaps WR Coach John Eason and says, "Dude - no more than 6 WR's per game!"
Won't:
1. Coach Searels doesn't fully understand the Dawgs history and bitch slaps (UGA sideline reporter) Loran Smith after a usual stupid question - the sideline goes nuts.
2. Tebow performs a circumcision on Rennie Curran.
3. I forget to wear my lucky UGA underwear.

Won't, the offensive line will crumble like peanut brittle again this year, just like they did last year and the year before that and the year before that and on and on.
Won't, the offensive line will not do their jobs properly when the game is on the line and will foul it up just like they always do.
Won't, the offensive line will refuse to come onto the field and will leave JPW with absolutely no protection from 4.5, 225 pound brick walls coming at him full blast just like they did last year on play after play after play all year long over and over and over again.
Coach Saban needs to find some offensive lineman that don't get nervous and give the game away at critical times like they continuously do. We need some offensive lineman that actually know how to guard the QB or make a hole for a running back.
Won't, once again a quarterback at Alabama will not be allowed to have a running back that can run more than 2 yards forward without dropping to the ground.
Won't, once again games will rest solely on the shoulders of a quarterback who has no team to support him. No running backs, no offensive line. It is hard for wide receivers to protect a QB and also go out for the passes.
We need an offensive line that doesn't think it is acceptable to have your QB sacked at least 25 times a year and be rushed, flushed, and hurried about 500 times.
Won't, we need smarter fans who understand that a QB alone on a field can't win a game and that he needs 10 other men to help him, that is why football is called a team sport.
Will, the defense continues it's inexorable rise under Saban and the new offensive coordinator actually realizes that offensive lines are important in the game of football.
Will, Wilson is given more than 1.2 seconds to make reads, scan the field, call the plays, and take more than 1 and a half steps backwards before his head is ripped clean off his shoulders by 8 or more defenders who live in his backfield at all times.

Will
1. The defensive line matures quickly and gets good pressure all year, leaving the secondary to cover receivers for shorter periods of time.
2. The running game continues to develop as it did during spring practice and Tebow focuses more on his passing game.
3. Playcalling on offense is designed to incorporate all of the playmakers in every game and never just Tebow or Harvin.
Won't
1. Injuries, especially at QB and DL.
2. LSU's bye weekend before coming to play the Gators in Gainesville.
3. We get caught looking ahead when a talented and off-the-radar team like Ole Miss comes to town.
WILL WIN BECAUSE
1. Stafford will finally show what he is capable of and lead the offense to soaring new heights with a deep stable of RB's led by Heisman candidate Moreno and a WR corps that is more capable than any in years past.
2. More returning key starters than any other team in the SEC
3. More momentum building off of last year than any team in the SEC
WILL NOT WIN BECAUSE
1. Tuberville sends cronies to Athens to break Knowshon's legs
2. Fulmer contacts a voodoo priest to put a hex on Mark Richt
3. Meyer lobbies for God to hate UGA

First, for why we will not win the SEC this year:
1. Because Georgia fans believe they own the East and they say it'll never happen.
2. Because Florida fans believe they own the East and they say it'll never happen.
3. Because Tennessee fans believe they own the East and they say it'll never happen.
And now, for the only reason we may win the SEC this year:
1. Because one day, those fans identified above will be wrong and next year will be here.
And if not, well, just wait till the next year.

It will be a huge stretch for my "will" reasons because I don't think Alabama has near enough talent to win the SECW much less the SEC. Of course that will not always be the case. With that said:
Wills:
(1) JM gets the offense performing much better then what we did last year under Major.
(2) The incoming recruiting class fills in the holes on the defense and plays above their years.
(3) The offensive line and a healthy group of RBs controls the clock limiting the time the defense must be on the field keeping Alabama in all the games and we win a few we are not supposed to.
Will Not:
(1) John Parker Wilson
(2) The defense and its depth, especially at LB. It is a crap shoot as to who will be starting other then McClain in the LB corp.
(3) Our Schedule is murder with a neutral site game against Clemson and on the road against Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU.
