I was going for Big Brown.. not a big Horse Racing fan or anything.. I just thought it would be cool if he won the Triple Crown. The race looked weird though.
Oh well.

Brown pulled up and finished dead last. Looked like he may have gotten kicked in his already injured hoof while in a jam behind the front-runners. No TC for at least another season. He becomes the first TC hopeful to ever finish last in the last race.

Right when they stuck him on the rail I knew he was done.

The whole coming in last thing is a bit deceiving because the jockey laid off the horse. He probably would have finished in the middle of the pack if he wouldn't of let off the horse. I think there has to be some sort of injury, though. I was hoping to see the Triple Crown.

Oh, I'm sure he would have been right in the thick of it; but the jockey must have known something was wrong. I wanted to see the TC, too. Damn shame for a horse who clearly outclassed his rivals.

Though I was rooting for Big Brown and his chase for the TC (primarily for the good of the sport), I was actually quite pleased to see him not win. I do not follow the sport closely, but my great aunt and uncle, who I am living with for now, follow it very closely and have actually made the trip to the Derby several times, meeting Kent Desormeaux on one occasion. My aunt has this fascination with Big Brown (calling him as a TC contender weeks before the Kentucky Derby) and said he was truly a special horse. I enjoy watching him run too, but the reason I was glad to see him not win was because of his trainer, Richard Dutrow. This is the guy who talked so much trash leading up to this race, claiming his horse as a virtual shoe-in for the TC. Like I said, I'm no horse-racing enthusiast, but I just don't see where a trainer can get away with such trash talk. It doesn't seem that he even had that much to do with this horse's brilliance, but he mainly got the luck of great bloodlines.
Like I said, I would've been fine with it turning out either way, but it is nice to see Dutrow get shut up.

Big Brown was the superior horse in that race and had the rail out of the gate.........he's a bruiser and not known to be bullied out of position but frankly w/out knowing any specifics, I believe the jockey lost the race by moving him to the outside when it got crowded inside and letting the #2 horse muscle him outside
what a shame, I'd like to see another triple crown

I just hope the horse is ok. I didn't feel like it was a good idea for him to run. Belmont is an esp. long race. I was afraid he would have trouble.

I'm just in awe that any of you were even aware of this stuff. I really don't know what to say. It's nice to see folks outside Kentucky talk horse racing for a change. Somehow I doubt there's enough of you to start a subforum on here. I like to hit up the Red Mile and do some off track betting and watch the quarterhorse racing there, you know, when Keeneland and all the lovely ladies aren't around.

I didn't get to watch the race because I had to work, and unfortunately my DVR didn't record the right thing, so I didn't see it, but I had a pretty good idea that Big Brown wasn't going to win it. I had my doubts about that polymer patchwork they were doing on his feet. I know its routine, but when you're talking a race as long as the belmont, you're talking some serious stress on that hoof. And with feet as bad as Big Browns, its only a matter of time before that catches up to him.
Its a shame that they aren't breeding these horses like they used to. Secretariat raced just over 20 races in his career, Big Browns last race was only his 6th.

Well, I watch when it's on TV. I read about it beforehand, so I can make an informed decision on who I think will win, and I would have put my money on Casino Drive...til he got scratched.

I had Tale of Etaki. bastard failed to win, place, or show after running in second place for a majority of the race.

My money was on Icabod Crane.... because I thought the rider was going to be headless.

I am very glad the jockey realized the horse was in distress. I feel if he had been at top speed, free of his injury, he would have absolutely won the Triple Crown. I felt very sorry about it. I wanted to see this horse fulfill his potential, but I do not want to see him win at his own peril. I would not have entered him in this race, were he my horse, despite how much I might have wanted the TC.

That's the thing. They have stated repeatedly that it's not a physical injury that caused him to run poorly. They continue to observe him and he is walking fine. If anything, it is either something internal or he just simply had a bad day. It also could be that he wasn't given his routine round of steroids (which he won the other 2 legs of the TC on). At this point, it is all speculation, but they have repeatedly made it clear that the horse doesn't have any major physical injuries. Running him was not a bad move.
