South Carolina Athletic Director
Eric Hyman has made a dramatic
hire for his new women's basketball
coach - Dawn Staley. Staley is
one of the highest profile coaches
in America in women's collegiate
basketball.
Staley is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and former WNBA All-Star, and has been the head coach of the Temple Owls since April, 2000. She took over a program that had not experienced a winning record in almost a decade and immediately became successful, leading the Owls to a 19-11 record and a first-round appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Staley went on this past season to become the all-time Temple women’s basketball coach with career wins at 172-80.
In her eight seasons at Temple, Staley produced six NCAA appearances, four Atlantic Ten titles, five Big Five crowns, including the last four straight.
Additionally, Candice Dupree became a WNBA first-round draft pick in 2006, followed the next season by Kamesha Hairston, who was selected by the Connecticut Sun.
Staley has been known for scheduling a strong nonconference schedule, taking on some of the nation's elite programs, such as Rutgers, Tennessee, Maryland, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina State, to name a few. Temple's strong schedule was a major factor in Temple landing an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, the second straight at-large invite under Staley.
Hyman has now made two consecutive hires of young energetic basketball coaches, with Staley’s hiring coming only five weeks after the hiring of new South Carolina men’s coach Darrin Horn. Staley just turned 38 this week, Horn is 35. Staley is also the highest profile African-American coach in USC history. USC Track and Field Coach Curtis Frye is the only other African-American head coach at USC.

A great hire by AD Hyman, and a great addition to the Gamecocks!! USC's women's basketball program has always been a great program waiting to happen, IMO, and I think Staley is a perfect coach to have some great success at USC.....

Hyman is saving Carolina athletics one day at a time. Actually, he's raising athletics from the dead. Things have never been on the up and up across the board at the level they are today. Very exciting hire.

He has been able to hire some coaches that we probably would have not gone after in previous years and those coaches might not have wanted to come here. Spurrier, Horn and Staley should shape up to be a good group of coaches for the next 4-5 years. I think Horn and Staley will be here for quite a while, not sure about Spurrier maybe 5-6 more years but regardless our athletics is getting some attention. But I think we also need to pay more attention to our academics.

Who is this Eric Hyman that you speak of? And why are grown men trembling like little girls when hearing his name? What has he done that is so impressive thus far at USCJr.
Give me some info on this chap. I've yet to see anything earth shattering in which he's done for a struggling university.

When he came here 3 years ago, the athletics department was in the red, and membership dues to the Gamecock Club had not been raised in 40 years, which is one of the reasons why Carolina has an athletics budget half of what schools like Florida and Georgia have. Other obstacles that keep us from spending the way they do cannot be overcome because those states are much larger and have many more alumni, so their giving base is much larger. However, in order to stay in the facilities arm race, giving levels had to be increased. Hyman is in the process of doing that, which has ruffled some feathers, but many Carolina fans are slowly realizing that nearly every athletic director we've had before Hyman has been nothing but dead weight.
I know Arkansas fans were wanting Frank Broyles to retire, but imagine what it would have been like if he had charged y'all basically nothing to join whatever fund raising club y'all have out there and made football tickets dirt cheap. You would have loved paying the bills, but Arkansas would have had garbage facilities, and the facilities y'all have out there are your claim to fame. Well, we loved paying the bills here for years, and we're finally realizing that more money equals more facilities, which equals better athletes, which equals more wins.
Meanwhile, everyone else in the SEC, except maybe Vandy, has better facilities, and Florida is about to start endowing every single athletic scholarship they have. How ridiculous is that? And USC, up to this year, was still paying 1960s prices to join the Gamecock Club. We're starting to see what you've got to do to win in the SEC.
Now, in terms of what we're doing with the money, we're in the process of building a new baseball stadium, which will be ready in the fall. We're also building a new academic enrichment center, which will be ready in the fall. We're building or updating all of our spring sports facilities. We will be adding an upper deck on the single level endzone stands at Williams-Brice. Also, they are planning on building several facilities around the spring sports complex and calling it the Athletics Horseshoe. Not to mention what he's doing in terms of hires. While the verdict is definitely out on Darrin Horn, which is understandable, Dawn Staley is a homerun hire. She is the best young coach in America. If you would have asked me the names three women's basketball coaches several months ago, then I would have said Pat Summit, Geno Auriama (sp?), and Dawn Staley. She's a heck of a hire, and is the front runner to be the coach of the 2012 USA Olympics team.
Now, what's this you say about a struggling university?
US News and World Report ranked USC as the #1 public institution in the SEC in 2005.
Currently . . .
USNews.com has USC ranked 112 and Arkansas 124.
Kiplingers has USC ranked as the 35th best value in America, while Arkansas is 59.

USC has the #1 freshman seminar program in the country.
USC has the #1 doctorate exercise science program in the country.
USC has one of the top 2 Pediatrics Residency Programs in the country.
Other rankings:

Top 10 in nuclear engineering.
#58 in nursing.

Not to mention we are in the process of a project unlike any other on any campus in the country. Check out the link below. There isn't enough time in the week for me to explain everything going on in the project linked below. It's going to be unreal.

Whew. Thanks for the explanation. You are truly a man who loves the University That cleared a lot up as far as the school apparently not struggling as the athletic endeavors. Very impressive academically. Very nice indeed. But I would like to know a little about the man. Is he a South Carolinian or a outsider doing great things in Columbia.
Please a short version on his Bio. Who was his mentor.
Broyles was somewhat of a visionary at one time in his life. But as time goes on, and this is the case of all schools, not only Arkansas, outside help is a large contribute to a program. If not for the explosion growth of Northwest Arkansas, the UofA would today be between Mississippi State and Vanderbilt as far a facilities. Sam Walton, Don Tyson, JB Hunt and others, based in NWA has been the target of Frank for years. They always came through with funds were most needed. After the 1998 football season, that would be Nutts first season, fan support was at it's highest in a positive way that it's ever been. Frank saw a need to expand Razorback Stadium, and those big names came through in flying colors.
It takes much more in today's world of college athletics, than to sit behind a desk and dishing out great seats to sporting events to top alums. You have to get out there and beat the brush. That was something that in his prime, Frank did better than any other. He went state wide to every Razorback club no matter the numbers of members in that area. He took the podium looking each one in the eye telling them that because of them, the Razorbacks is seeing success. He would use the location of campus as a tool also. By tell crowds that we are a special University for a young kid from the suburbs wants to come to little ole Fayetteville Arkansas to play ball. Things like that open the pocketbooks of thousands who loved the only game in town. With no professional franchise to compete with in ticket sales Frank knew it was a large tool in doing what he accomplished during his tenor. The fact that the Football Razorbacks played homes games in central Arkansas as well didn't hurt the program either.
So Brice, if this guy of yours will hit the road and paint a picture of what the university South Carolina to the people of South Carolina, and create something your people can call your own, then you may have something. But the most important thing is this. You have to let go on what Florida and Georgia has or is doing. That is them. You have to make your success without looking in the neighbors yard.
The jury is still out for me on our new AD Jeff Long. He has some huge shoes to fill. But the one good thing remaining is that the above mention business men is still around with the exception of Sam Walton. But his family is still close to the university.
