Columbia (WLTX) -- University of South Carolina police arrested USC men's basketball star Devan Downey Monday night.

Downey is being held at the Richland County jail on charges for simple assault.

Typically, one is charged with simple assault when they make a verbal threat to another.

Russ McKinney with the university says the incident happened last week. McKinney told News19 that Downey and another student were involved in a minor altercation. The spokesman says the student just decided to file charges Monday.

There is no word on whether Downey has been suspended from the team. USC policy states that any player who is arrested for any charge is automatically suspended from the team.

Downey, a Guard from Chester, is a sophomore on the team and transferred from Cincinnati.

Nothing is going to come of this. I talked to someone who was there when it happened, assuming this is the same situation from last Monday. Devan was standing in line at the Russell House and got in some kid's face. No word on what this was due to, but apparently no punches were thrown. I'll be shocked if anything bad beyond this point happens.

Downey arrested for misdemeanor assault

South Carolina star men’s basketball player Devan Downey, was arrested Monday and charged with a misdemeanor stemming from an incident 10 days ago with another USC student.

Downey, a 20-year-old sophomore, was charged with simple assault. He was picked up by USC police and detained Monday night at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, while awaiting a bail hearing.

An arrest report would not be available until today, according to USC spokesman Russ McKinney.

Curtis Lowery, a 19-year-old sophomore from Irmo, alleges Downey approached him at the Russell House on April 25, and, during an argument over a woman, Lowery alleges Downey hit him.

“He tried to slap me with one hand, and I ducked to the side,” Lowery said Monday night. “He palmed me to my right eyebrow. ... He didn’t punch me, no.”

That afternoon, police questioned the two students. Lowery said he decided not to press charges because he was unhurt and Downey was apologetic.

But Lowery said he changed his mind when friends told him Downey was telling them a different story.

“He took my kindness for granted and went around and tried to glorify a situation after I turned the cheek,” Lowery said. “The point is he needs to be taught a lesson.”

Downey, a 5-foot-9 point guard, was named a first-team all-SEC selection this past season, when he averaged 18.5 points per game and was among the national leaders in steals.

Athletics department spokesman Steve Fink said coach Darrin Horn was aware of the situation but would have no comment.

Downey is suspended from team activities because of the arrest, per athletics department policy.
