At the Laurens County Gamecock Club meeting tonight, Steve Spurrier named Tommy Beecher the top QB. He said that "if we played tomorrow, Tommy Beecher would be our QB."

Don't have a link, it's from a rivals insiders article; I'm sure the state paper will have a piece on it tomorrow.

Some notable quotes by Spurrier:

"Tommy is a young man who can run around a little bit. He's going into his fourth year here. As a coach, you'd love to have a fourth or fifth year quarterback. Tommy Beecher can throw the ball, he can run around."

"Tommy is the smartest guy on the team. He has a chance to be a really good player for us. We'll see how it works out. We're looking forward to seeing what happens. The team is pumped up."

I think this is good for two reasons:

1. it'll hopefully give Beecher a lot of confidence and make him work harder in an effort to prove Spurrier right

2. it'll make Smelley work harder and give him determination to win the starting QB role back

Smart move by coach IMO.

I just hope we find a QB. If the season started right now, we shouldn't even play. Our offense is just pure horrible. We have struggled running the ball and throwing according to qutoes from Spurrier. Our offensive line has to be able to protect Beecher or any other QB for that matter and open up holes for the RB's. This is gonna be a ugly season if we don't find a QB soon.

What was the Buzz on Beecher out of HS? I'm guessing that is the last time he played in a real game correct?

Actually Beecher played about half of our season opener against Lou. Laff. last year with Smelley. (Blake Mitchell was suspended for the first game). I don't remember all that well, but I know he had a touchdown...

After going to 2 scrimmages, a practice, and a Spring game Beecher stood out to me as the better QB. And honestly, I was hoping Smelley would get the job because I just think he's a good guy. But Beecher's ability to run with the football is definately needed. Beecher also seemed to make better decisions than Smelley.

I know he had 3 interceptions in the Spring game, however, 1 was tipped up by the intended receiver and the DB made a great play on it. The other two were thrown later in the game after Spurrier had taken out our starting receivers and put in walk-ons and guys (like his step son Scotty) that will probably never see the field. Not to mention the fact that the defense could only rush 4 so our QBs were pretty much throwing into fire.

I think many SC fans overreacted at the QB performance in the Spring Game...two years ago Cade Thompson looked like an All-SEC QB in the Spring Game, if I remember correctly he may have only played one down in the 2006 season and that was against Middle Tennessee State.

I think this is a good move by Spurrier and am excited to see what Beecher can do.

You mention his ability to run with the football is a needed asset. Is this because of the OL or the WR's?

OL, they have shown a great deal of imprrovement however. Much better than previous years...but they are still the most inconsistent part of our team.

If I know one thing about College football it's that Championship teams all have two things in common: 1. A great QB 2. A Great OL

I still believe if Garcia comes back (and he will), he will eventually during the season take over at QB. So much potential going to waste! I think he'll be awaken during his suspension and finally get his life staight. At least, I'm hoping.:throwcomp

I agree....I'm still hoping Garcia comes in and wins ALL Sec Freshman of the year. I think he'll be back.

He got in to the Clemson game in 06' and completed a pass that went for like 25 yards, then spurrier pulled him. Im from the same town as Beecher, and he was pretty good in high school, got a state title but I never thought he was capiable of starting at a sec school, but lets see how he does!

If the season started right now, a large number of teams in the SEC shouldn't even play. USC isn't special in this regard.

Based on my observations of spring practice, as well as the observations of many others who have watched them, this past spring practice was resoundingly the best one yet under Spurrier. Despite the fact that we held the practices mostly without Jasper, McKinley, Captain, E. Cook, Pepper, Sapp, and Prochak, as well as limited practices from Davis and Wallace. Our OL is further along as a unit than they were this time last year.

We've had several newcomers make strong impressions during practice, such as Auguste, Whitlock, and Shaq Wilson. Culliver and Barnes will be major contributors to the depth of our secondary, and - along with Auguste, who may steal the #1 CB spot from Thomas if Carlos is not watching - should make the images of cramping from our starting DB's last season a thing of the past.

We had major improvements in the performances of our WR's, especially Moe Brown and Larry Freeman, while Lecorn continued where he left off last season, and Hills and Jason Barnes will be factors. Wes Saunders was an offensive MVP for the spring practices, IMO. Both Davis (until he slightly hurt his hamstring) and Wallace (until some grade issues curtailed his practice time) were strong during practices, and Maddox came on strong in the B&G game.

I think we'll see some solid improvement in the OL for '08, some definite improvement in the D and ST, and 2 or 3 consistent options at receiver alongside McKinley. Unless Garcia comes back, keeps his nose clean, and covers some lost ground super fast during the fall practices, we'll probably will not be very strong at QB. But I'd rather the only weakness be at the QB position than at other positions, because I think SOS can work with either Smelley and Beecher and make them consistent, dependable QB's. Weaknesses at the other positions spelled trouble, because SOS was helpless at doing anything about them.

Yeah, but I dont think that will be until mid-season. I just heard a couple of guys talking about how Garcia is going to have to go back to Tampa to take care of something and that he wont be able to practice during the summer. Of course he is suspended also.

I think it will be a lot sooner. I believe when he takes stock of all his mistakes and WANTS to make amends, Garcia will work his butt off this summer to justify SOS's belief in him. Spurrier is an amazing coach/man and I think Garcia felt as though he's let him down and try to become the player SOS thinks he can be and not be another Derek Watson. I'm pretty sure when he gets back he know the playbook backwards and forwards. Also, I think he'll try to be a better person for his parents.....I know he let them down big time! Just my 2 cents worth.

Oh yea? So, you are saying; as long as they have those two things in common a team really doesn't even need a defense to win a championship? This must be part of your X-factor BS.

Well, at least Scott was able to get Bowden's mind on something other than that Parker kid......that's getting to be unhealthy, if you ask me.......
