ESPN - Dolphins agree to deal with Long, will select OT No. 1 overall - NFL (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/news/story?id=3358424)
The Miami Dolphins have reached a contract agreement with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and will select him with the No. 1 overall pick in Saturday's draft.
Despite speculation that Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells really had planned to select Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston or Virginia defensive end Chris Long, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith that since the Dolphins opened negotiations with Jake Long they were talking to him exclusively.
Long, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound senior who moved to left tackle in 2006 and started his final 26 games, was an All-America selection and Big Ten lineman of the year in each of his last two seasons.
Offensive line is considered the biggest need for the Dolphins, who went 1-15 last year.

Good Move by the Fins!! I think you will see this more often in the future. Skill position players are just such a gamble these days and more often than not, you get burned considering the money you have to pay the guys selected at the top. Long's a safe, solid pick!!

This is a very safe pick for the Dolphins, and they need OL.

Por Que??
If you pick Ryans and he turns out to be a bust or if you pick Dorsey and he's damaged goods, your team is much worse for it.
There's no guarantee that Long's a sure thing, but you have to like his odds over the others!!

Tell you what, you can take whatever thug ass WR we pick to replace Ocho Stinko and Chris Henry, and we'll take Jake Long.

everything on miami's team was awful this year. OL was bad but it wasnt as bad as other things on the team. i would have taken dmac. he is a playmaker and miami has no playmakers. none.

I guess you didn't see Ronnie Brown at Auburn when he had blocking. I think he'll suffice thank you.

We're gonna get rid of him...the distraction he'll cause is worth the salary cap hit. If he doesn't want to suit up, calls Carson a liar....get him out of here. I can deal w/your sideline shennanigans when you're busting your hump, but after all the crap the team has done, and the three contracts they've renegotiated w/him over the last 5 years.....then you do this and take a big crap on the team? Screw you. He's another Corey Dillon. Ship his ass to Arizona or San Francisco.

What good would DMac do you without an OL?? Playmakers do not exist without a solid OL. There's a reason New England, Denver, Seattle, San Diego, etc. have consistent production and "playmakers" are not the answer.
And finally, with no offense to DMac, good RBs can easily be found in the NFL... good offensive linemen are in short supply!!

?? did u see ronnie brown this year before he got hurt? he was a beast. lead the nfl in yards from scrimmage. i think brown can be one of the best backs in the nfl. but ive read where his rehab hasnt gone great and u never kno how a guy will come off an acl tear.

the OL isnt as bad as ppl think. like i said above, ronnie brown was leading the nfl in yards when he got hurt. so obviously the line wasnt that bad. and good running backs can be found in all rounds but dmac has the potential to be great.

Case in point: How many different 1,000 yard rushers has Denver turned out? A ton, thanks to great OL play.

true, they had a bunch of dfferent guys rush for 1000 yards. but some of those were barely over 1000 yards. they also had to keep gettng new guys. if mcfadden reaches his potential, were talkin about 1500+ yards. were talkn about a guy u can build ur franchise around. miami doesnt have a franchise player. jake long sure aint it.

Granted, but what is the value between a good and great RB in today's NFL??
I guess another way to put it would be to ask what team has benefitted the most from a great RB and what has that meant in terms of team accomplishment. Point being Solid OL > Great RB

Exactly !!!! For the most part a OL will be around much longer than a RB.

Don't need a "franchise player", you need solid pieces....
Which would you rather.... Jamal Lewis' 2000 plus yard season in 2003 that ultimately led to a 10-6 record and a first round exit, OR the consistency that the Denver OL had making anyone running between them look good?? Maybe not worded just right, but ....

i kno u need a solid OL. my point is i dont think it was in need of the number 1 overall pick to fix it. a great running back can change everything for ur offense. a great rb takes pressure off our young QB. it makes the defense gameplan differently. nobody centers there gameplans around stopping ryan grant, lendale white, or olandis gary. those guys are or have been good backs. dmac could be they type of back that u have to gameplan for. guys like LT and brian westbrook command attention from coordinators.

but they aren't the franchise player you're talking about. anyhow, they're the only successful team without a franchise guy.

Great thing for the Dolphins! I want to see Miami do better next year. To re-build a team is extremely challenging. I like to think the Dolphins are up to the task!
