air conditioning.......wow, what an invention........I can remember my family going to the beach as a kid and we would leave the house at around 1 or 2 in the morning and it would be bumper to bumper going down Hwy 31 ..........driving in the dark cuz we didnt have A/C

I think its easily electricity as a source of power. Nobody invented electricity but many different people had a part in it becoming a source of power. Once electricity began being used, civilization took a giant leap forward. Its definately the single-most important invention/discovery in history because without it, just think of the countless future inventions and current technology that wouldn't be here.

Well, I'd say that indoor plumbing and toilet paper would HAVE to be up there. I actually saw a show on The Discovery Network or something like it and it was absolutely fascinating.
I think one of the more interesting facts was regarding how if a couple was walking down the street in Europe in the 1800s, it was customary for the man to walk on the street side of the sidewalk because if someone happened to be emptying their "pots", it was more "polite" for him to take the brunt of the "shower" over the woman.:barf::eek:
And to think...my wife won't even leave the house without her collection of hand sanitizer bottles now. A bit different these days, huh??

correct sir
Knowledge was monopolized by the Aristocracy in handwritten books, w/the invention of the printing press information/knowlege could be disseminated amongst the masses, thereby freeing them from the bounds of ignorance and a life of misery and giving them the know how to go beyond and obviously w/more and more people having knowlege, innovation was expedited exponentially

yep yep. books were available but only if you were rich and noble.
Thats why the Native American culture was the same in the 1700s-1800s as it was 1000s of years before, they had no written language and depended on oral narratives.
