FanninFan's OOC thread got me to thinking... what schools did you apply to out of High School and what were your reasonings for your decisions??

I grew up and graduated HS in New Orleans and these were the schools I considered:
Tennessee (for obvious reasons)
SMU
Florida State
Marquette

Strange mix, I know, but.... my HS sweetheart and I wanted to go to school together. She was into her music (she played violin) and wanted to go to a good music school while I wanted to study business. Neither one of us were anything special in terms of grades and GPA, but at least I tested well, so I had more options.
SMU was my first choice. I had visited the school and fell in love with it. I was accepted, but my GF was not. Ultimately this was not a bad thing for even if she were accepted, neither one of us could have ever afforded to go there.
Marquette was never a real serious option although they did have a good music program. For some reason, they had a recruiter at our HS one day that I really liked. She sold me on the school although I just really liked the fact that it snowed alot there. hahaha. I applied and was accepted, but since my GF would have never even considered being that far from home, I never seriously considered it.
I was VERY close to being a Seminole, though. FSU had a good music program and since my dad's wife had graduated from there, I kind of liked the school. My GF and I were both accepted, but after further review, FSU declared that my GF would have to go to a smaller local school to get her grades up before she could officially be enrolled at FSU. She wouldn't go for that.
Frustrated, we finally decided that we needed to look out for ourselves. Tennessee was the first school I had applied to and was the first to accept me. Since it was always my dream to go there and since my GF still did not know what she was going to do, I decided on UT. She ultimately went to Southern Miss and we drifted apart.
I always wonder how life would have turned out should I have decided or chose one of the other options. You??

Early in High School I wasn't yet a big Georgia fan... so I didn't have any idea that I wanted to go there.

Schools I considered:

Georgia Tech - Adviser in high school had a hard-on for GT and was pushing me there because of the Naval ROTC program there. I was never interested in a technical degree, but their History program was supposed to be very good, and I was somewhat interested, though I never bothered applying at GT.

The Citadel - My older cousin stood on the long gray line, and I wanted very much to go there. However at the time I wasn't decided on commissioning in the military, and my parents could not afford the out of state tuition at a private institution (enormous cost to go to the Citadel without a scholarship or the military paying for it) so even though I was accepted, I chose not to attend.

North Georgia Military College - I considered this as an alternative to the Citadel... although it just wasn't the same. I was convinced I wouldn't be happy if I was constantly reminded that I could have been in Charleston.

Miami - Dad's Aunt is a rich old woman that lives in Coral Gables, FL... and she said for years that she was going to donate all this money to my college fund, so Miami was on the table if she had actually put up.... but turns out she was all talk and I never saw a dime.

Georgia - I fell in love with the place when I visited with my best friend (a UGA student) and went to a couple of football games. Experiencing the atmosphere of Athens, along with the amazingly gorgeous girls, goes a lonnnng way. Of course they have a very respected faculty within the department of public and international affairs, which is what I had chosen to study. I made the right decision

I applied to UTC. They took me. I went. Did I have a shot anywhere cool? I doubt it.

I applied to UK and EKU because I wanted to stay close to home and a ton of my friends were going. Born and raised on UK, only fitting I should go there. I'm blue to the core.

All schools I considered. I chose Arkansas because of a serious family situation.

When Florida is down I root for the best SEC school that year and hope for them to go to the National Title or what not...

The only school I applied to was UF. I grew up a die-hard Gator fan. This is where my mom, sister, uncle, and granpa went. If I didn't get in, I was going to go to the community college in Gainesville and then to UF...no way in hell was I going to go to FSU.

Me and UGA is a fan thing. Never was there any money situation that would have allowed me to attend a major university like that. I would have loved to though.

As far as team loyalty, I have been a Georgia fan for as long as I can remember. My dad said he told me to pick out a hat in the store one day. I was like 5 or 6 and I grabbed the UGA one without hesitation. My dad was from Alabama and didn't try to persuade me either way. So red and black was in my blood I guess.

I root for all the SEC teams except UF but my second favorite team has to be Notre Dame. As a matter of fact I'm trying to make it to a game in Ann Arbor this year. I own a few Notre Dame hats and sweatshirts too.

UK was the only school I applied to. Not only did I grow up a Wildcat fan, but it was the best school for me academically as well.

I considered South Carolina, South Carolina, and South Carolina.

I grew up about six miles from the University of South Carolina campus, so it wasn't a hard decision. I graduated in 1983.

I applied to and was accepted at South Carolina, Va. Tech, NC State, UGA, College of Charleston, PC, Wofford, Miami, and Texas. I didn't know what I wanted to major in so I went with Carolina because of the business school. I figured if I recieved a business degree I'd find something I could do with it. I never really honed in on Carolina because I'm a Gamecock fan, it was just that it was the best fit.

To be honest, I only applied to three schools and got maximum allotted money to all three:

Ole Miss
Georgia
Mississippi College - I went here because I still have no idea. The two above are much better choices.

Dad and Granddad both graduated from Auburn. I was expected to be the third generation Auburn. Oops.

I only applied to Alabama because that was the only school that interested me (I did visit a few others though). I came home from school one day and was informed that "I" had also applied for UAB and Auburn.

I only applied to Carolina. It was an easy choice because I grew up a Gamecock, and I had a lot of family and friends in Columbia, even though I had lived in south Georgia my whole life.

I was accepted to:
Air Force Academy (turned it down which is weird considering I did my duty with AF)
Alabama (Love the teams, but in the end wanted a small private school)
UK (No way. I took classes there considering how close I was to UK for summer school. Every class I had proved why I went to a tougher school)
Samford (Almost went there. loved it and everything it stands for)
UCLA (Love it. Would of never went to class)
UNLV (same as UCLA)
Transylvania (Top 3 choice)
Centre (Top 3 choice)
Asbury College (perfect choice and spent my 4 years there)

At 16 I applied to and was accept by the US Army. I grew up on stories from my grandfather (WWII - Pacific) and uncles (Korea, Vietnam) and I knew from an early age that I wanted to join the Army.

I didn't apply to college. I knew college wasn't for me because I hated school. I didn't struggle with learning or anything, I just wasn't challenged by what they were teaching and it left me bored to tears for 12 years. The last thing I wanted was more of the same crap, only at a greater expense.

And in the Army is where my cravings for everything LSU began. Oh, I was mildly interested before this point, but nothing big. While deployed overseas I craved every scrap of news I could get from home and LSU quickly became a focal point for my hometown news interests. It served both as a diversion to some tough situations in which I found myself and as a morale booster.

LSU offered more during my deployments than it could have if I had attended classes there. The only other school I consider my self a fan of is the United States Military Academy AKA - West Point. I always root for the Black Knights.
