Regardless of whether or not Memphis wins the National Championship, poor free-throw shooting cost them the NC in regulation. After missing 4 of their last 5 foul shots, KU came back to hit a 3-pointer to take the game to overtime. None of this would have even taken place had they even made one more FT.:brick:

Memphis fans should be pissed. Instead of getting his players to work on FT he convinced them it wasn't a big deal to miss them. Yes they shot them better in the tourney, but it still cost them the title.

That's it. Calapari said free-throw shooting wasn't an issue... wonder what he says now. And still no team that has shot less than 65% from the free throw line on the season has won a National Championship. Even in this game, Memphis shot 63%, and the 1-5 at the end of the game cost them a chance at history and their first title. Gotta give it to KU and Coach Self for deciding to foul at the end, and expose the huge weakness.

Say what you want...I've always been a football fan who dabbled in "off-season" sports but this tourney was something to really enjoy. Freethrow woes or not...these final four teams made basketball look like ballet at it's finest!! I'm still amazed...

It was a great tourney, for sure. And, I think Memphis is still the most talented team; but, KU is the more disciplined and fundamentally sound team... and those teams win more often than not. At the end, when FT's really become important, the most sound team is the one who is prepared in all facets of the game. Every one of KU's players on the floor at the end shoots 74% or better from the charity stripe... every one of Memphis' players shoots... well... in the 50% range.

It was definitely a lot of fun to watch, though... I love the fast-paced games.

I'm just enjoying the money that I won by picking Kansas over Memphis. Aza, where you at? Nobody could beat Memphis, their FT shooting % didn't matter right?

J/K. What a great way to end a tourney.

Kansas went out there and held on in spite of the way Memphis fought violently to take control. Memphis almost did it. Until the end, it was bitterly contested. We saw some great defense by the Jayhawks and some thrilling three pointers by both teams. It was a dramatic game and well worthy of a National Championship game. Congrats to Kansas on a magnificent year, and you can't take anything away from Memphis. It was phenomenal for them as well.

well as I said in another thread Calipari may have goofed........KS got the ball w/10 seconds left in regulation down by three......what should Memphis do? Foul is the answer.....they take the inbounds w/10 seconds left, foul them when they come over midcourt leaving around 7 seconds left, KS hits both, you're still up by one w/little or no time left, you get fouled on your inbounds and even miss both free throws now KS has to win w/a couple of seconds

dammit! up by eight w/a minute left in regulation.....wtf!

The percentages evened out is what happened. But you're completely right, Calipari should have had one of his guys foul immediately when they inbounded the ball with 10 seconds left.

Calipari was calling for them to foul Aza, they just didn't get the whistle.

"As he's had to do all season, Calipari sat a podium afterward and attempted to deflect the obligatory questions about free throws. He focused instead on the fact the officials didn't blow a whistle when Rose attempted to deliberately foul Kansas' Collins in the final seconds to stave off Chalmers' subsequent three-point attempt."

Certainly the free throws hurt, but you can't blame the loss exclusively on that....that's an over simplification. Memphis failed to execute in the last 2 minutes and Calipari basically sat on his hands, closed his eyes and prayed. Kudos to the guy for getting the talent to come play at his school and for getting his guys to this spot, but he bares the brunt of the scrutiny in my opinion. How you leave 2 timeouts on the table with what was riding on this game is rediculous. In Memphis' 2 losses this year, Calipari got BADLY out-coached when the game was on the line. Kudos to the Jayhawks on the win, but they were given a giant gift!!

This is what makes basketball so much fun, the fast pace. There is no time to be bored if you are watching basketball. Kansas came ready to make it happen. If you are going to miss the free throws, you may find yourself in trouble before it's over. How many games in basketball are decided by one or two points? Enough to show that making the free ones is crucial and can be the difference in a win or a loss. Memphis knows all about it...that's why Kansas fans were dancing in the streets last night!

im a tiger fan and i didnt listen to what calipari said i knew we would miss FT when they were most important. i think the refs had some bad calls and when they reviewed rose's 3 pointer they should have let it stay. i lost 500 vcash on the tigers:brick:
