here are more stats from cfbstats.com - College Football Statistics (http://www.cfbstats.com).
these are interesting--arguably the 3 best teams in the league last year are at the bottom. what can it all mean? normally i put penalties down to bad coaching. i guess the top teams have the talent to overcome mistakes?
oh, and congrats to the Bammers for playing clean football.

We had some bad ones at bad times. The same with turnovers. JPW fumbled the ball inside his own five twice against LSU & FSU late in the gameto give those games away. He gave MSU 7 points on a bonehead INT to close the 1st half to stink that one away and threw a pick to a UL-M guy who returned it to the one for an easy TD. The the INT against da barn to close the 1st half stank (though that was probably more DJ Halls fault).

Interesting, I knew penalties never really killed us last season...but I didn't know we were #1 in the SEC. Feels good to win something in the SEC.

69 seems like a lot to me, for some reason. That's about 6 per game.
Edit: I just saw that it gave the averages/game.

Ranked 6th in the SEC baby, that's what I'm talking about....wait, nevermind.

Take away that 1st quarter of the Florida game and we almost get to 8th place.

Here's an interesting thought. This year, it was LSU who was the worst offender, at 62.9 ypg, and they won the NC. Last year, it was UF, at 63.4 ypg, and they won the NC. In '05, Texas had 65.5 ypg, and they won the NC; although they weren't the worst in their conference that year... they play dirty over there, and their average was actually 5th best, with Texas Tech and Colorado tying for worst with 83.4 ypg.
Moral to the story: If you want to win the NC, have between 60 and 66 yards of penalties per game.

Yeah, I was saying it feels good to win a category. Which in this case winning the category meant the least amount of penalties and yardage.

there is a reason for this. i've been saying this for several years now. SEC refs even the odds. look at lsu this year and flor last year. sh*t, even in 03 we were one of the worst penalized teams. sec refs suck plain and simple. it's amazing that all of a sudden LSU was mr. no penalty in the NC game with big 12 refs. lsu, flor, and uga were usually the favorite in most the games and it's more than a coincidence they had the most penalties. it's complete BS

Why would the SEC be biased against any team that poses the most potential in winning the NC? They would lose ALOT of potential $$$$ by doing that.
I think it has more to do with aggressive play.

it's too much of a coincidence that the best teams are always the most penalized. it isn't that way in other conferences.

I agree 100%...if I see another flag on the field after Brandon James returns a KO or a punt for a TD in a meaningful game, I'm gonna go kick some ref ass!! Funny thing is...most of the time, the commentators review the play and can't find the penalty...

i remember a phantom face mask call that never happened in one game. to all the non-believers (i know..i bet a lot), watch a game next season in the sec when the favorite will get penalized for crap all game. it happens ALL the time

I'm not whining Ramp, I'm really not. But PLEASE DO. PLEASE make a 7+ minute video of the lopsidedness in calls/no calls/personal fouls within ONE game. PLEASE.
I understand LSU was/is an aggressive team, but most of that stuff was just plain ridiculous.

Wrong. There are plenty out there. You must not visit YouTube too often. AU LSU '06 instantly comes to mind, for one example. And it's not sour grapes. It's past and LSU would've won the game either way. I accepted that then as I accept that now.

Really? Is that why ESPN's favorite team of all time-USC, is the one of the most penalized teams in the country?

Look at FSU and Miami too. I don't think its a conspiracy against better teams but more like a lack of discipline and uncontrolled aggression

For the record, the two BCS conferences whose champions were penalized below average:
NONE of the 11 Big 10 teams were penalized above 6.38 per game
FIVE of the 7 Big East teams were penalized over 6.38 times per game

plenty of people on this board called LSU out last year for those thug plays. You want to make it seem like people are whining to make up for their team losing, but thats not it. Watch that tape again, I can deal with losing to LSU as a USC fan, but i don't think you need to take a guy out for the rest of the year to beat us and i'll be damned if i'm not going to stand up and be heard when an LSU player spears a kid lying face down on the ground. Watch that tape again, there are 3 or 4 times in that game when a LSU player could have crippled or killed a USC player, no joking. You play hard to win, but there is no room in this GAME for that kind of stuff. You really want to see someone leave on a stretcher after spearing them when they were already down or swinging a QB around by his facemask. Make all the false starts and offsides you want, just don't put a persons health at risk because you're a thug
