Tonight I had the privilege to speak with Kendrell Bell for about 20 minutes. It was the best 20 minutes I've had in a long time. Not only did I get a chance to practice what I hope to do later in my career, but I simply had a chance to talk with a great human being. We talked about everything from playing organized sports to help with understanding players as a reporter to what it's like in the locker room after everyone just had kids. Long story short, he's the 1st Dawg that I have ever TRULY liked. This guy was down to earth, and knew how to rationalize with anyone.
Basically, he was at my church tonight. Jim Marsalis, a retired Cornerback who started for the Super Bowl IV Champion Kansas City Chiefs, has an offseason mentoring program that he operates out of Memphis. Bell, an 8th year veteran Linebacker who's currently a free agent, is going through the program to get picked back up. Marsalis and his wife go to my church, and she was just confirmed tonight at the Easter Vigil. Kendrell and another player have been doing everything with the Marsalis', and they were there tonight.
I hope to talk with him for a few minutes after church tomorrow, but I thought I'd just throw that out there, and if any Dawg fans want me to ask him anything special, to just let me know.
By the way, Bell was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL in 2001, and he was a 2nd round pick of the Steelers after graduating from UGA.
