Saban still big deal in Louisiana
Tuesday, March 18, 2008
This should be an absolutely wonderful time for LSU football fans. Another SEC banner is waving outside Tiger Stadium. Another national championship trophy is in the crowded case. Fans should finally be enjoying the fruits of victory. They should be delirious.
Instead, the LSU Nation is being embarrassed once again.
For starters, it's been downhill ever since the Tigers put the beat down on Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. A pitiful crowd of 25,000 (Florida had 50,000 the year before) gathered to celebrate LSU's national championship. By most math accounts, even in Louisiana, that's a cool 67,000 fewer people than showed up for Alabama's spring football scrimmage. And they call their program big-time.
Meanwhile, major problems continue to follow LSU's heir apparent at quarterback, Ryan Perrilloux, who is in the headlines more than another proud Louisiana product, Britney Spears.
LSU's recruiting took a hit in 2008 and I'm sure it had to bother fans to watch Alabama -- with Nick Saban at the helm -- take home the No. 1 prize.
But the story that came out over the weekend further cemented any doubt that LSU fans simply can't enjoy their own success. Apparently, they still have "Nick Envy."
Instead of giving Les Miles the expected raise he is entitled to receive, they gave him $3.75 million. What's remarkable about that? It's $1,000 more than Saban. Of course, it's in his contract that he becomes the highest-paid SEC coach. By giving him the $1,000 on the nose (what's wrong with a few more pennies to look more legit?), LSU comes off looking petty, which shouldn't really be that surprising considering the history of the school.
Still, if you listen to LSU fans, they don't care about Saban. He doesn't matter. Well, try reading the local paper in Baton Rouge, the Advocate.
"LSU football coach Les Miles will make more than $3.75 million -- guaranteed -- this coming season, giving him $1,000 more than Alabama coach Nick Saban."
The headline in the Monroe News Star was similar: "LSU's Miles bests Saban by $1,000."
And the story, written by columnist Glenn Guilbeau reads: "LSU coach Les Miles has one-upped former LSU coach Nick Saban again."
Nobody over in Louisiana cares about Saban, right? It sounds more like being on the schoolyard in third grade when some kid pushes another, saying: "My daddy can beat up your daddy."
How pathetic.
How typical of LSU.
My question is why should anyone in Louisiana continue to be obsessed with Nick Saban in relation to Les Miles?
Why can't they embrace Miles? Perhaps the fact he desperately wanted out to leave for Michigan -- that is until the story blew up on ESPN -- might have something to do with the uneasiness and insecurity.
Since taking over Saban's recruits, Miles is 34-6 and has finished No. 5, 3 and 1 in the final AP poll.
Understandably, LSU fans are still obsessed with Saban and queasy with Miles.
LSU fans may still yearn for the day when Saban roamed the sidelines. They remain embarrassed about Miles -- even with the national title -- like family members regard the crazy uncle stowed away in the attic.
Don't forget people: Les Miles makes $1,000 more than Saban. Ain't it great to be on top?
Nick Saban has been gone nearly four years. When will LSU fans get a life?

I wish the same could be said of the Volunteers except have the national championship last year instead of 1998. I have Miles envy.

Uh, I posted an article without comment. The uneasy feelings LSU fans have with Miles come to surface after these kinds of articles are posted. Just admit it, the Larry Coker thingy is in LSU fans heads and it won't go away. You're not alone, a LOT of college football fans see it.

not really. i don't know anyone here who thinks like that. saying it over and over and over again doesn't make it true. u said it all of last season and you see where that got you...obsessed and ridiculed?
and with that i'm out. i'm tired of argueing with idiots. i might be back next week. this board has really dropped off these days.

If you would have posted an article without comment you would have called the thread "Saban still big in Louisiana" and not attached a Crimson Tide icon to the thread.

Seems to me headlines are comparing Miles to Saban because Saban WAS the highest paid coach. Contractually (apparently), Miles gets that honor. Therefore, you have to mention Saban to make the point. Also, when you're making $3.75 million dollars a year, it ain't petty to meet the terms of a contract by only $1000. The important part of it is to meet the terms of the contract. Finebaum seems to be projecting a little bit here.

I think the entire thing is ridiculous. Football season is still too far away. Things get crazy the more time we have to dwell on the fact. Come August, we can start feeling really gooood again because kickoff is right around the corner. Hang on! It's coming! I promise!

Poor LSU. I truly think they miss Saban, but it wasn't our fault he left them. They feel like a discarded lover. I think they fear any success we may have at the hands of Saban, is success they feel they should have had, and the fact that Miles has given them success, doesn't appear to have healed the wound. i would probably feel the same way if our coach left us, and was successful elsewhere, but they must remember it was the Dolphins that lured him away, not us.

I could care less about Saban being at LSU, he was a good coach but he left Baton Rouge in search of greener pastures...I'm just glad we don't still have Gerry DiNardo as a coach...

Most LSU fans that follow recruiting didn't expect to be in the top 10 this year. We expected to be around #15, because Louisiana had a down year in the level of talent. Most of us expect to have a great class next year though.
Also, we all know that Saban is a great recruiter. He might be the best recruiter, but he has alot of trouble winning the games once he has the talent around.

I am hoping the Tigers have a good season! Good luck to you, and it will be fun to see how we all do. I take pride in the fact that LSU is part of the SEC! We have the greatest conference in college sports!

LSU & UT fans have a lot in common. They both have coaches who were extremely lucky last year to back into the Title game. LSU even luckier because they got to play the 3rd best team in the East while their starting QB was out. That's good news for the rest of the SEC and bad news for a fairly large segment of both fanbases. All that did, according to those fans, was put up a false facade and ensure both coaches 3 more years.

The Dawgs played pretty good Defense last year, but Ellis Johnson is gone. Took a lot of Defensive luck last year for the Dawgs to win ANY SEC games. That's a testament to Johnson, but the guy you have now as a DC sucks. I know, he used to be at Bama. The luck runs out for the Dawgs this year and it's back to the cellar.

Last I checked, LSU fans aren't responsible for Les Miles' paycheck or his raise. So where does this pinhead get off calling the "Fans" pathetic?
It's an argument LSU can't win... the fact that Saban WAS the highest paid coach in the SEC puts him in the headlines in Louisiana and across the SEC as "Miles one-ups Saban". The headline would be the same no matter who Miles had to jump as the highest paid coach. It just so happens that it's Saban.
This dude is a loser, and finds that the ONLY way to get "one-up" on LSU is getting personal and accusatory that we're "hard up" for Saban. Puh-lease. Who really cares? LSU fans don't, bc we're gonna stomp his ass in Death Valley this year.

I'll say it again, most of us LSU fans have moved on, and wish Saban the best and appreciate all he did to help LSU. Yes, there are a few Tiger fans that hold a grudge, but there really isn't that many now. We have moved on. All teams and coaches get booed when they come into Tiger Stadium, but Saban will probably get booed a little extra when he comes to Tiger Stadium this year, but I think even he understands and expects that. Hey, that just comes with the territory of leaving LSU and going to another school within the same divison a couple years later. But it's no biggie now, except for the fact that it just adds a little more spice to the game!
Personally, I think there are "a few" Bama fans and media who try to "flatter themselves" into thinking that the whole Tiger Nation is mad at Saban and jealous, and that's just not true. Heck, we just won a National Championship! Reguardless what the BP's of the world say, we're proud of our school, proud of our team, proud of ALL our current coaching staff and we're just down right proud to be an LSU Tiger! Coach Saban has moved on, and so have we. The only time most of us even talk about it anymore is when junk like this comes up or right before we play the boys from Tideland. But if some of you guys what to continue to flatter yourselves with the thought and keep bringing up the subject, I guess from time to time we'll step in and say all this again. Bottom line: LSU and Alabama are two classy schools with two of the top coaches in the country heading up their football programs.

Haha, I don't think his lack of fandom (Yeah, it's a word) is restricted to any particular team. I think he has put himself into bad favor with anyone who values rational thought and integrity.
I digress.
