(I've been brooding on this for a while now, and if someone has posted on this issue already, I apologise, but I had to get my thoughts out in the open.)
Increasing taxes on the rich has been a very popular idea lately and is championed by Republicans and Democrats alike. Sadly, those who are not rich or don’t consider themselves rich (even some that do), seem to think this is a wonderful idea.
With the following phrase, we begin our summit attempt on the Mountain of Stupidity.
“They’re rich, they can afford it”.
Well how stupid is that? How would they like it if someone purposed a tax increase on them, simply because they worked hard to pay off a bill and are now able to put $50.00 a month in their savings account? That’s fair, right? I mean, they CAN afford it now that they paid off that bill, right?
We ain’t at the top yet, so let’s climb on…
First off, who are these “Rich People”? Those championing this idea never seem to define this ambiguous term do they? They just say “tax the Rich”, as if no further explanation is needed. So why, exactly, is it that no one that supports this tax ever demands that these politicians put out specifics on who they want to increase taxes on? Because they are only too happy to get something for nothing and they think that “the Rich” are somehow cheating them. And the politicians realize this. They know that most of the people they target with this rhetoric will either be too uneducated, too lazy, or too jealous of “the Rich” to ask any questions. And sadly, they’re right.
Ambiguities aside, let’s take a look at these “Rich People” and find out who they are. If you look at how 99.99 percent of “the Rich” got rich in the first place, you realize that they are the people who worked hard and made sacrifices to get where they are. They are the people whose ideas and drive to succeed created every business in America. They are the business owners whose continuing efforts and determination provide the steady jobs that everyone who agrees with this tax on “the Rich” enjoys. That certainly makes sense, I know that I’ve never been given a job by a poor person, have you? Basically, everyone who supports this tax increase is saying that they want to punish the very people who offered them the chance to provide for their families. Also, just because you own a business it doesn’t mean you’re “rich”. Small, single proprietor businesses usually makes the owner just enough to live comfortably and to provide a few jobs to others. They aren’t all “raking it in” and we would be wise to remember that.
Finding out who “the Rich” are, we see what this tax increase does. It punishes hard work, determination, sacrifice, and self reliance. It says that if you succeed, your government will punish you for it and give your money to people who did nothing to deserve it. Stay tuned folks, we haven’t reached the summit of Mt. Stupidity yet, but we’ve got a damn good view.
Let’s press on to the top…
What gets me is that, not only do the supporters of this tax increase fail to see that they would be punishing those who pay their salaries, but they also don’t realize that a tax increase on “the Rich” is a tax increase on them as well. As anyone who has a reasonable grasp on economics will tell you, if the cost of doing business goes up, so does the price the consumer pays. And that’s exactly what a tax increase would do. It also could mean that a small business owner would be forced to lay off workers to compensate for the extra tax burden. Basically, supporters of this tax increase on “the Rich” are actually cheering on the possibility of their own layoff. And with that realization, we can now enjoy the view from the summit of Mt. Stupidity.
Now that we’ve made it to the top, let’s look back on how we got here, shall we?
By supporting higher taxes on “the Rich” these people…
1. Want something for nothing.
2. Want to punish success.
3. Want to punish those who gave them a job.
4. Want to pay more for goods and services.
5. Want to jeopardize their jobs.
While I do agree that everyone should pay their share of taxes, I don’t agree that we should turn one tax payer upon the other in order to gain political ground or to attain something that we have not earned. That is EXACTLY what this purposed tax increase on “the Rich” would do.
Sorry for the lengthy post, I just finally got fed up with hearing this crap put up as a “good idea”.
