I think Fulmer was the main proponent of that being pushed by the SEC commish. I heard there was quite a squabble during the annual SEC coaches meeting on this.

If you can't out work them, pass legislation.

Anybody notice the first comment on there? From somebody named "TigerRoar". I'm guessing it's NOT an LSU fan.

Pete Carroll is right...the "big-time" recruiters...Meyer, Carroll and Saban work their asses off...spending time away from their families, interviewing/courting recruits...all over the country. Most coaches don't want to work that hard...so, Tim is right...they just piss and moan and get rules passed. That's what happened with the texting rules...Meyer was utilizing this form of communication to keep recruits on target...now, it's illegal to do so. Sucks...next, these coaches will start bitching because Carroll, Meyer and Saban are signing too many top classes...the NCAA will ban coaches from recruiting for a year so other schools can "catch up"...ridiculous.

Hmmmmmmmmm.........wonder if you or any of the others who share this opinion have CONSIDERED the parental imput? I know first hand that one guy's parents threatened Legal proceedings against a certain SEC program who ignored their requests to be left the hell alone once their son had committed elsewhere. While you will NEVER read such accounts in the local paper or God forbid either of the two network recruiting sites, every year there are more and more parents taking a very hard line attitude towards interference in the lives of their kids.

Sure, when Pete is mining the Inner City of LA for talent, the overwhelming majority of the kids don't have nuclear households and thus are all about the perks of the system and have little to zero Adult oversight. But when there's Mom AND Dad making sure Junior's following the program and they see the usage and time on their cell bills, stuff can happen in a hurry.

So in spite of your youthful zealousness there GN, you might wish to curse the Parents of guys you'd hope would give UF a shot for not taking kindly to cell calls and text messages interfering with their kids' lives away from ball.

Text messaging and emails were a loophole in the original rules that ALL coaches took advantage of until the NCAA cracked down on it. Alot of head coaches have left the grunt work of recruiting up to their young assistants while the head coach makes occassional phone calls to recruits from the comfort of his own office. Now, we have some whipper snappers of Head Coaches who not only don't mind the work but prefer to be out evaluating and recruiting talent. The rule change is just ridiculous when you really think about it and why it was even brought to a vote in the first place. Its no different in making a rule stating that certain Defensive Coordinators or Offensive Coordinators cannot sit in the Press Box and call the plays since they spend alot more time preparing than others are willing to do. You know, just to keep it fair...

Bottom line is... if I'm willing to outwork you in recruiting... LEGALLY... then deal with it.
It's not about where you are but where you want to go.... and in college football... recruiting... is the start... then you coach them up. If those two merge then you ... WIN!

The NCAA cracked down on texting because the lazy-ass coaches Carroll is addressing didn't want to learn "technology". There were a few articles at the time...a year or so ago...where coaches were interviewed and several didn't like it...I remember JoPa saying he didn't even know how to email. Anyhow, these coaches protested it...so, the NCAA...like the communist regime it likes to play...banned it.

Thats true too but I think the bigger issue was banning the Head Coaches from going out to evaluate and recruit. This is not a rebuttal to your post but a rant by me on both issues. The text ban happened a few months ago, the coaches ban was brought to the NCAA by the SEC after several coaches whined about it. The coaches voted on it during a meeting and the SEC proposed the rule change to the NCAA. I know that Saban found two unknown gems during last years class while recruiting other players. One was CB Kareem Jackson who ended up starting and won Freshmen ALL SEC honors, the other guy WR Darius Hanks redshirted last season and he will certainly see alot of playing time this year in the slot. Now with the new rule, coaches like Saban who have a track record of finding those unknown gems are banned from doing so. Who does this hurt the most and who does it help the most? It hurts those unknown players and helps the lazy donut eating coaches.

Then why are guys like Fulmer and Weis suffering with their "talent" come gametime(and further, why have Fulmer's recruiting classes become less and less noteworthy as the years go on?)

This rule goes into effect this spring. It helps them because they don't have to get out and work as hard as the other coaches and therefore not fall as far behind in recruiting.

The answer to your first question could be that they may not evaluate talent and character as well as others.

The answer to your second question is the whole reason for this ban.

Saban did the same thing at LSU. One player who didn't have any Div. I offers wound up being a 1st round draft choice after Saban spotted him and offered. The coaches that can spot talent will still have an edge, though.

Pete Carroll is a shady POS coach IMHO. How can this guy consider himself amongst the great coaches in CFB? What happened to all of these recruiting violations that suddenly dissapeared? If it were any other program the media would post it all over the place. Leave it to ESPN to protect their love facisination with USC. In reality, the guy is probably one of the laziest coaches in all of CFB. He is nothing more than a figure head that makes his assistants run the program. Anyone can lie to sell there program and throw money at recruits to get them to sign, but the best recruiters IMO, are the ones that get the kids that want to attend the school and are willing to learn and fit into the system and be "team" players. Besides, good programs shouldn't have to sell themselves to recruits.
