Athens — Georgia football coach Mark Richt will get a raise Thursday during a special meeting of the executive committee of the Georgia Athletic Association board of directors, according to sources within the athletics department.

Richt currently makes $2.2 million a year. His existing contract runs through 2013. He is the seventh-highest paid coach in the SEC.

The Bulldogs went 11-2 last season, and defeated Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.

The team is being picked by many to challenge for the national championship this season.

I think this year is pretty crucial for Richt. He's always had the Dawgs around the top of the East but has never been able to win the big prize (National Championship). With the expectations the way they are this year, he's going to be under some heat if the Dawgs fall out of contention midway through the year.

I definitely think he deserves the raise, though.

oh yea for sure even if he doesnt win the NC he should still get a raise, the kind of things he has done at UGA deserves 3.5 mill a year!

Wow... what if UGA loses three games next season? That's a million dollars for every loss. I think, with the way the college football landscape is headed, he's worth that much. Pay the man.

Consider that he's only the 7th highest paid coach in the SEC, and yet he's the WINNINGEST SEC football coach of the past 10 years.

Athens — Georgia football coach Mark Richt will receive a raise to
$2.8 million a year after the executive committee of the Georgia
Athletic Association board of directors approved the measure Thursday.

Richt had made $2.2 million a year. The raise makes him the
fifth-highest-paid coach in the SEC. He had been the
seventh-highest-paid coach in the conference. His contract remains
through 2013. Richt could not be reached for comment.

"Mark has done an incredible job during his run here as our football
coach, not only in the win-loss column but how he represents this
institution and what he means to us overall," athletics director Damon
Evans said.

The Bulldogs went 11-2 last season, finished the season ranked No. 2
and defeated Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Richt, 48, has a career record
of 72-19, with two SEC titles.

The team is being picked by many to challenge for the national
championship this season.

"We look at this as a raise for Mark Richt based on what he's done,"
Evans said. "There's six years left on the deal. We just didn't see
the need to extend the contract. That in no way is sending a signal."

Evans said that all of Georgia's assistant coaches will receive
raises, as well. He said that Richt will decide how much each
assistant gets.

Georgia extended Richt's contract in August 2006 to the end of 2013.
At the time, it made Richt one of the highest-paid coaches in the SEC
with a base salary of $1.7 million a year and bonuses that could raise
the contract to $2.35 million.

A decent raise, in-line with his performance, which puts his pay back up in the top 5 in the SEC. At $2.8M, there's still plenty of room between that number and the program bankrupting salary of The Son of The Bear.

With the money that Richt has brought the University over the last 6-7 years, he is certainly worth 2.8 million. In fact...i think the University got him at bargin. He is worth at least 3 million. If Richt were driven by money, he could have certainly held out for more money. The UGA faithful are very lucky he's driven by things bigger than money and he is very content to be where he is at.
IF we win the big one this year...I wouldnt be surprised to see him be the highest paid coach in the SEC. If he takes us to the promise land...he will be worth whatever dollar amount he is paid.
