Even if it's the lesser of two evils...

The bizarre thing is extremists from both sides, whether they're liberal or conservative try to paint their opponent as a communist or a fascist to the real americans... while nothing further from the truth exists.
If I could encourage you to do one thing it would be to study the positions of both candidate and don't allow the party mouth pieces to make up your mind for you.

What I find strange is that Southern states have gone conservative over the last couple decades. They all used to be Democrat, because that was the party that most looked out for us. Republicans were Yankees, and we didn't want any part of that. They believed in an oppressive Republic that took advantage of us, primarily economically. I don't know what happened, but it's still the same today. Republicans only claim to want less government where it concerns helping poor and disadvantaged people. Otherwise, they're all for big federal government, in the way of military, police, and governing people's personal liberties. They're for the things that the founding fathers tried to protect us against with the Constitution and Bill Of Rights, like an omnipotent Federal government and military that infringes on privacy and choices. That was the whole point of the Second Amendment... to arm the people so the Federal government didn't get too big for its britches, and start running over common people. Some would argue that tyranny exists today, with the domestic policies set forth by conservative legislators and President Bush. These are also things the Confederate States feared... what happened to us?
I hate to say it, but the U.S. is starting to look more and more like a fascist Republic every day, as more and more of our freedoms are retracted or practically repealed. I would also say conservatives are responsible for the widening economic disparity demographic... almost to the point where there are only extremely wealthy people and the rest of us. I honestly think if many of them could have their way, they'd either incarcerate or exterminate those they consider inferior. And, they're not far off in their quest of that, either; as they prefer to build more prisons and close more treatment facilities, and lock up people with the diseases of alcoholism and addiction, instead of treating them so they become productive members of society. Here's the ironic part: They claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility; but, it's a fact that it's far more expensive to incarcerate these people than it is to treat them. Not to mention, Bush wiped out Clinton's surplus he left him, and now has us with an unprecedented deficit. Fiscal responsibility, my a$$. Equally ironic, is that many of the ones clamoring for that type of society claim to be superior, but fewer and fewer of them actually did anything to get wealthy in the first place. It was their birth-right, and they've just remained wealthy. Staying wealthy is a lot easier than getting that way... money makes more money with little or no effort. So, the argument by many of the "entitled" snobs that they earned their place is complete BS. Those that still support Democrats do so because they realize the difference between them and the guy standing in line for a sandwich at the mission is often times purely chance and opportunity. They don't take their good fortune for granted, and realize few people are born with the same breaks in life, that they've been afforded. Want a little more irony? These policies that conservatives keep enacting are actually counter-productive to their intended goal; because they make it increasingly necessary for more and more people to seek assistance. They are the ones creating the need for government programs. Making wealthy people wealthier turns middle-class people into poor people who can't afford the simple needs for a family. I think we've learned that "trickle-down" doesn't work, because wealthy people become increasingly greedy for fear of not being wealthy at some point in their descendants' lives; so, they just keep any extra properity in their portfolio. It never trickles down because their fear influences them to stop it up while it's at the top.
I'm not really either, as I support policies and ideas from both sides, but if I have to pick the lesser of two evils, I prefer to choose the party of compassion; because I've lived on both sides of the tracks. I know for a fact that not all impoverished people get that way through their own shortcomings or deficiencies. Bad things often happen to good, hard-working people; and they find themselves in precarious situations through no fault of their own. Some people are born with a better shot at success than others, and often no amount of effort is sufficient to overcome the obstacles. The Republican Propoganda Machine is second only to that of Nazi Germany, and is becoming such a close parallel, it's truly frightening. Both parties may be liars and con-artists; but, since I have to decide between a group who's exaggerating to help the disadvantaged, and the group who's exaggerating to help the wealthy, I'm picking to help the struggling.

This is such a magnificent post and so very understanding of what is happening in this country RIGHT NOW. In Europe, they call Bush by the name of Hitler, a name very sadly familiar to them, as well as ourselves. That is what even other countries can so plainly see about what is going on over here. The very great poet, Shelley, also said that if he had to err, it was best to err on the side of compassion. I find myself on this side as well. We are becoming a country of extremely wealthy, and extremely poor people, and that is not what this country is about. We are supposed to be about equal opportunity for all. We need to get back to that, to show the world and ourselves that we uphold the ideals we were founded upon. We have strayed so far from that now. Even Rome would fall, and we are going down a very dangerous road.
