The Georgia legislature is preparing to outlaw the newly released vanity license plates for tUF fans unless the state of Florida agrees to issue a UGA vanity plate. The law would also outlaw vanity license plates for other out of state schools such as Auburn unless those states comply also.

Does Florida flat out refuse a Georgia tag, or has there just not been the interest? (Such as in Alabama, the state doesn't create the "idea" for the tag. It is petitioned and there has to be at least 1,000 buyers before they produce it).

Typical Georgia version of common sense. Lord knows they don't have anything more pressing to spend taxpayers' money discussing; like the sorry state of public education, for instance. Judging from those lawmakers, it's obviously still lagging far behind most states. Pretty stupid proposal, too, considering there are thousands and thousands of Gator fans in the Atlanta area; many of whom own quite successful corporations and businesses responsible for paying the taxes that pay their salaries... not to mention the taxes and fees from the tags themselves.

There hasn't been a proposal in Florida, as far as I know. The Gator tag in Georgia was done exactly how you're saying Alabama does it. The Atlanta Gator Club, which is the largest Gator club outside of Florida, made the proposal. They needed 1,000 people signed up, and $25 from each one paid to the state before they would even begin making the tags. It took less than 2 weeks for the AGC to send in the $25,000 check and applications. They've already arrived, and are being distributed. Of course, even if they weren't renewed, once they're bought, that's your tag forever if you want... you just add new stickers every year; so not renewing them wouldn't get rid of them.

Pretty much any group can get a tag in Alabama. Here are some examples of the more unusual ones....

The Georgia legislature is in wah wah mode after getting locked out of the BCS game. It's pretty sad and pathetic to be honest. Of course this is the same group that passes a law specifically to help a kid's situation and then neglects to make the law retroactive to actually help him out.
Oh and how is this for a weirdo plate.

That's a pretty weird one alright. We use to have a "Square Dancers" plate here in Alabama but I think they have done away with them.

In Alabama you can show support for your favorite Bourbon on your car!

UGA and those state lawmakers are getting hammered on the national boards, and the AJC one. How pathetic can you get? I couldn't care less if UGA got a plate in Florida... it's more money for Florida. The same goes for Georgia... $25,000 to get started; then $25 for each plate they sell after those, plus $25 a year for ALL of them for the specialty tag fee. I'm all for UGA getting a tag in Florida; provided they wait the same 10 years they made UF wait, going through all the legislative red tape and denials we did.

Yea, while in-state university plates get a portion of the fee to their own school. Out-of-state university plates go towards the general higher education funds which can only benefit the schools there.

Hah! I love our state legislature...southern politics at their finest. Good stuff.
"Why does a car sitting on blocks need a license plate?"
On the other hand, the state is running out of water...I wonder when they're going to get around to that...

I never have understood that. I think they want it insured, too. I guess it's conceivable that an uninsured motorist could veer off the road, through the ditch, up the embankment, through the yard, and crash into a car up on blocks.

The northern part of the state is running out of water. South Georgia sits on top of the Florida aquifer.
