Well, you first have to narrow it down. Since about a third of the team's in the country have some type of cat as their mascot, you have to rule out Auburn, LSU, and Kentucky. Similarly, since about another third of the team's in the country have Dogs as their mascot, you have to rule out Georgia and Mississippi State. And third, since I'm taking the "homer" postion in this poll you have to rule out Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Ole Miss, Florida, and Arkansas. That leaves South Carolina.

It's got to be either Vandy, Ole Miss, Tennessee or Bama with Vandy probably deserving the top spot.

I WOULD say Bama, but Tulane was the 'Green Wave' in the SEC 1st, so Commodore, Volunteer & Rebel are a little more unique than the Crimson Tide.

AR may deserve special mention as well, not many other teams want to identify themselves with a pig ;)

My vote is for Vanderbilt.

I think everyone should vote for LSU! I know their are a lot of tigers in college sports but how many of them are fighting???

Actually I think it has to come down to Vanderbilt or South Carolina. I might give the edge to USCe just because their mascot is a rooster and they have the word "cock" in their name and that just gives you so much opportunity for dirty jokes.

Best college bumper sticker seen in Columbia, "You can't lick our 'Cocks!"

AR, TN, MS, AL, SC & Vandy all have fairly 'unique' mascots.

Well who wants to identify with a chicken? Or an elephant on the rag? I'd rather attatch myself it a Razorback, the epitome of BEAST, than any of the other "unique mascots"

1. Arkansas
2. Vanderbilt
3. Alabama
4. Ole Miss
5. Tennessee
6. South Carolina
7. Florida

There is a flaw in your logic, what about the other numerous bird mascots; Eagles, Falcons, Cardinals, Jayhawks, Owls, etc.

If you lump military men together that takes out Rebels, Volunteers and Comodores.

What remains are Razorbacks, Alligators and Red Elephants (although I believe in the beginning there was no animal associated with the Crimson Tide.

There's no flaw in my logic......I clearly stated I was taking the "homer" position in the poll. When doing that, you typically state whatever means you need to justify your vote.

By the way, I'd also have to rule out Razorbacks, Alligators, and Red Elephants as they are all animals. See how this works?

Ummm and for the record, Auburns mascot is NOT an Eagle, so why are we discussing it? If I'm not mistaken, they are the Auburn tigers, and their mascot is Aubie... a tiger. The most overused mascot in college football.

UT has the Volunteer, but Ole Miss has a Rebel, and Vandy has a commodore. All three are military men.

Adam, Vanderbilt is named after Cornelius Vanderbilt. A 19th century American railroad tycoon who donated a million bucks in the 1800's to help start the school. His nickname was Commodore Vanderbilt.

Most unique in the SEC. Well is comes down to the gators or the gamecocks. The two teams in Div 1A that have a mascot like no other in Div 1A. In Div 1AA there are the Jacksonville State Gamecocks but there is also in Div 2 the San Fransico State Gators. So to rule which one is the most unique, it has to go the Gamecocks because of the word "cock" that can be used to shorten the name and all the jokes that may come with it. Plus the name of our mascot is Cocky. So that's my vote.

Gators come in a very close second.

Well didn't expect people in here to be open minded on this issue. But IM going to rise above the narrow minded jack legs in here. Here's my Top Five.

1. Auburn: I'm a huge Bald Eagle guy. It has to be one of the coolest things in sports to see that magnificent creature released before kick off each home game. With dual mascots (Tiger's & Eagle) the Eagle release seems not to have made a national splash. But in my opinion, it ranks up their with Notre Dame's Touchdown Jesus and Ohio State's Dotting of the I by a band member.
2. Arkansas: The wild razorback hogs that roamed the Arkansas countryside in the early 1900s bore only slight resemblance to the typical farm-grown pigs commonly found at a county fair. The untamed razorback hogs were lean, ill-tempered beasts that commonly fought, and defeated, whatever crossed their path. Today the Arkansas mascot is a Wild Russian Boar. It's a real treat for young ans old to see the Trailer holding Tusk before game time and each home venue. During the actual game, Tusk is moved inside the stadium where he can be seen by the entire crowd.
3. Georgia: Even growing up in the Southwest Conference as a young Razorback fan, I always like that mean Bulldog that roam the sidelines between the hedges in Athens. Uga is one of the coolest and most recognizable mascots in America. To date, there have been six dogs to carry the name "Uga", which is derived from an abbreviation for the University of GeorgiA. Each is the son of his predecessor. Deceased Ugas are interred in a mausoleum near the main entrance to Sanford Stadium. The current presiding Uga is Uga VI.
4. Ole Miss: Simply because of the history and tradition. Few know that the original Colonel Rebel emblem was a black man. Blind Jim Ivy was a campus fixture until his death in 1955, being affectionately known as "the dean of freshmen" for his many pep talks to incoming Ole Miss freshmen classes. Jim Ivy became an integral part of the University of Mississippi in 1896. Born in 1870 as the son of African slave Matilda Ivy, he moved from Alabama to Mississippi in 1890. Ivy was blinded in his early teens when coal tar paint got into his eyes while painting the Tallahatchie River Bridge. Ivy became a peanut vendor in Oxford and was considered the university's mascot for many years.
5. Tennessee: Well I can see rating a Chicken, Elephant, Stuff gator, a common Wildcat, Tiger or a Ship captain. And a cow bell really doesn't do it for me. As bad as I hate that freaking Rocky Top Tune, I guess I have to go with that barking coon dog Smokey as my #5 selection.

I do.

The mascot is a Bengal tiger named Mike the Tiger. The tiger was named after Mike Chambers, LSU's athletic trainer in 1936, when Mike I (one) was bought for $750 from the Little Rock (Ark.) Zoo. Mike I was introduced on October 21, 1936. Mike V reigned from 1990-2007. Pretty good life span.

Bama's name and mascot are def. unique, I can't really come up w/an argument against them. One could even make an argument for Auburn w/their 3 different mascots. lol. They're still officially Tigers, so not unique. South Carolina shares their mascot w/Jax State...which cost them my vote. Vandy's, while unique, is kinda lame. Cornelius Vanderbilt was just an honorary Commodore.....so that cost's them. LSU, my Wildcats, MSU and Georgia, do I need to explain? Ole Miss, if they were allowed to have a mascot, would deserve consideration, but while it is unique, it's lacking in the intimidation dept. Which leaves Florida and Tennessee.....which I just won't vote for. lol

At the end of the day, my vote goes to Arkansas. The Razorback is A. a freaking great idea for a mascot and B. is similar to say.....Michigan. It's a ferocious animal, but it isn't used anywhere else...so it's not played out (like sadly, my Wildcats.)

my #1 animal mascot is far and away ralphie from colorado. i think it would be so cool to watch ralphie go running. talk about amazing.
my #1 most unique costumed mascot is youdee, the fighting blue hen of deleware. that's freakin' awesome.
my #1 most unique animal mascot is the ibis from miami. the story behind it of the ibis being the 1st bird to appear after a hurricane, it was a well thought-out mascot, and i actually like it. hate miami, like the mascot idea.

now...for specifically the sec.
favorite animal mascot is the between tusk and...well...smokey i guess. smokey has been with tennessee for a long tim and his history is very rich!
favorite costumed mascot is still smokey, as he's a top mascot in the country, and freakin' amazing
most unique mascot is probably big al and tusk. those are mascots.
most unique nickname has to be tennessee. its closely tied to history, and shows our dedication.

I'd pick the Ole Miss Rebel.

But for clarification the gamecock isn't nessecarily named for the bird. It is named for the Revoluntionary War general (Thomas Sumter I believe) from South Carolina who wore gamecock feathers in his cap and was nicknamed "the gamecock"

As far as the SEC goes, I would have to say a toss up between the Razorback and the Gator.

But noone in the world can touch the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs!
