South Carolina found their Defensive coordinator. Congratulation hope things work out for everyone involved.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ellis Johnson has resigned as defensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas to return home to coach at the University of South Carolina it was announced by Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino on Thursday.

“Ellis Johnson has resigned as defensive coordinator,” Petrino said. “I spoke with Coach Johnson this morning and he felt like this is the best decision for his family. I certainly understand that. He and his wife are both from South Carolina and many of their relatives still reside in the state. I wish Coach Johnson and his family the best. We will now move forward in hiring a defensive coordinator.”

Johnson was officially announced by Petrino on Jan. 4, 2008, after spending the past four seasons as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State.

“I was blessed with opportunities at two great universities, two great Southeastern Conference football programs with two proven and accomplished head coaches,” Johnson said. “South Carolina is home to me and to my wife as well as much of our family. I have 16 years in the state retirement system there and it was something that we were always looking toward in the later stages of my career. It was an extremely difficult decision and the timing is unfortunate. However, I feel that it was the right decision for my family. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity Coach Petrino gave me to be a part of the Razorback program.”

As a Gamecock fan, this has been one hell of a day, but I feel that we made out okay. Thank god we have a coach like Spurrier that can pull in a good defensive coordinator in the matter of hours.

And let me just say, I feel for you Arkansas guys....I know how it feels to think the D-coordinator betrayed you and left 12 days before signing day. It sucks. Spurrier turned the reigns completely over to BVG and he betrayed us. Anyways, hope yall find a good coordinator. Good luck!

i like him as a coach but the way he handled trying to get out of starkvegas kind of bothered me....while i am somewhat biased, he kept saying different things to people that made it look like he was trying to play everybody....maybe he was, maybe he wasnt....but good pick up for USC, he knows how to coach....good luck next season...

Show me the evidence and I'll believe you. Anything that happened in the 90's doesn't count.

How 'bout the fact that MSU had a better ranked defense than USC the last 3 years, despite USC having better ranked recruiting classes overall in each of those years, including pretty much better position rankings at the DT, DE, LB, CB, and S positions. Wasn't MSU on schollarship probation during those seasons, from the Sherrill administration? That ought to count for something...

Although I was crazy excited about BVG, I'm almost as excited about Ellis Johnson. He's a good coach and will pull together our running defense. I don't think pass defense will be our problem with munnerlyn, cook, and all those returning defensive starters. We haven't had any problems with the pass in the past, but that may be because of our outstandingly low amount of rush defense. He'll pull the defense together.

Yup. Johnson's defenses are known to stop run offenses and he is a god when it comes to implmenting run defenses. I agree with you that our pass defense will be fine. We have all the guys back from last year, plus we get the two DB's from last year's class Allen and the other guy. They will provide some much needed help. If he can fix our run defense, we should be in for a dang good year.

Yeah USC run defense should and will improve with Coach Johnson. MSU run defense this past year stopped the top 2 running backs in the nation to well under their averages. Go Dawgs!!!!
