UM defensive coordinator gets 3-year deal worth $350,000 a year

OXFORD — Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix is in line to make more than $1 million over the next three years, pending his contract’s approval by the state College Board on Wednesday.

The contract would be the richest ever for an assistant coach at Ole Miss.

The college board’s approval is usually a formality. Nix’s propsed contract runs from Dec. 11, 2007 to Dec. 10, 2010, and pays $350,000 per year, according to a state College Board agenda item.

Nix’s contract is more expensive than originally reported. When Nix was hired in December, Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone said his contract would be a two-year deal worth about $300,000 per year.

But Nix, who was previously the defensive coordinator at South Carolina, was coveted by many schools even after he was announced at Ole Miss. Boone was not immediately available for comment about whether that extra interest from other schools drove up the price for Nix.

Previous Ole Miss defensive coordinator John Thompson signed a three-year deal worth a total of $900,000 last year, but was not retained by new coach Houston Nutt. The university is still paying Thompson’s salary, along with a $1.35 million buyout to former coach Ed Orgeron, who was fired in November.

Other proposed assistant coach contracts listed on the state College Board agenda included recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn ($140,000), Kim Dameron ($100,000) and Ron Dickerson, Jr. ($80,000).

Head coach Houston Nutt’s $200,000 state salary is also included in the College Board agenda. That’s just a fraction of his complete $1.7 million for next year, most of which is provided by the private UMAA Foundation.
