Kent Austin is in Oxford to interview for the position on Wednesday. Older Rebel fans will remember Austin from the 80s where he QB'd the Rebels on his way to a short NFL career and an outstanding CFL career. He just finished coaching the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a Grey Cup Championship in November.

Kent Austin is entering his first year as a CFL Head Coach, and will serve as the 26th head coach in Roughrider history.

Prior to coming back to Saskatchewan, Austin served as the offensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts from 2004-2006. In 2004, he helped coach the Argos to a Grey Cup championship and in 2005 his work with quarterback Damon Allen helped the Argo quarterback claim his first ever CFL Most Outstanding Player Award. In 2003, he made the transition into the coaching ranks when he served as the quarterbacks’ coach for the Ottawa Renegades.

Austin returns to the Saskatchewan Roughriders after playing for the team from 1987-1993 during which time he led the Green and White to their second ever Grey Cup championship in 1989. After passing for 474 yards in that celebrated victory over Hamilton, Austin was presented with the Grey Cup MVP trophy. After leaving the Riders, Austin went on to claim his second Grey Cup ring in 1994 when he quarterbacked the B.C. Lions to the championship. He spent one season with the Argonauts before rounding out his playing career in 1996 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Over the course of his playing career, the Tennessee native broke many CFL records and his name can still be found in numerous passing categories in the league’s records book. He still remains as the CFL’s ninth all-time passer with 36,030 yards. His 57.6 yard completion average is third best only behind Doug Flutie and Tom Clements. In addition, he remains one of only four players to pass for more than 6,000 yards in a single season. Austin achieved this in 1992 when he passed for 6,225 yards. He was also inducted into the Saskatchewan Roughrider Plaza of Honor in 1999.

Prior to appearing in the CFL with the Roughriders in 1987, Austin spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL after he was their 12th round selection in the 1986 NFL College Draft. He attended the University of Mississippi, where he set many passing records with the Rebels and was later inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame in 2000.

Kent and his wife Shelley have three children – Kendall, Kassidy and Wesley.

In addition to Austin, Nutt will interview "former Alabama offensive coordinator Dave Rader, former Texas A&M coordinator Les Koenig, former Auburn coordinator Al Borges, former Virginia and Mississippi State coordinator Sparky Woods, former Miami head coach Larry Coker and former Ole Miss wide receivers coach Hugh Freeze."-Parrish Alford

A few surprises there, I'd like to see Freeze or Borges simply because Austin is so far removed from the South and recruiting. I think Cianne has said it before, and I agree, Freeze is one of the great young minds in football. I know he's a former high school guy, but he's got he stuff. Al Borges was only run out of Auburn as a scapegoat; he's a great OC.

we still have to take into account that whomever is hired will be the QB coach.

I generally ignore what Parrish says, but Hugh Freeze had a two hour interview with Coach Nutt last night and it seemed to go well. Austin's flight was cancelled so he'll be flying in today to either interview tonight or tomorrow.
