Okay so a bunch of you are looking to get in shape this new year, and you just know you should be out there jogging or whatever, but you find the thought of going out running every day to be so repulsive that you often let exercise slide.

Unfortunately for you, you're healthy eating alone isn't going to do it. 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day is what you need to get if you truly want to see a change in your body.

Now, this doesn't mean that you have to go run 30 minutes every day. 30 minutes at a level that keeps your heart rate high (this shouldn't be a walk in the park). The key to being successful is finding exercise that you enjoy.

Some ideas:

- Running
- Swimming
- Racquetball
- Mountain/Street biking
- Rec. Sports such as Basketball, Flag football and others are good too.

For those of you that go to the gym, the treadmill isn't your only option. Elliptical machines are a great way to get a cardio workout for people that experience pain when running on a treadmill. The low impact of the elliptical is great for people just getting started with exercise, and people who weigh more; it doesn't put nearly the stress on your joints that a treadmill does.

And the best advice I can give to those who choose to run/jog/bike, etc.... get yourself an mp3 player and load it up with tunes that get your heart pumping. Music really does get you going, and will make your cardio workout much more enjoyable. Obviously you'll have to find your own music, but if you want some real adrenaline pumpers....

Selections from D^3's current workout playlist:

Amon Amarth - Runes unto my memory
Kataklysm - Like Angels weeping (the dark)
Machine Head - Davidian
Daath - Subterfuge
Ministry - Just one fix
Chimaira - Save ourselves
Hatebreed - To the threshold
Drowning Pool - Bodies
Rob Zombie - Let it all bleed out
Ankla - Still Alive
Powerman 5000 - Drop the bombshell
Hatebreed - Supremacy of Self
Chimaira - Everything you love
Seether - Gasoline
Hatebreed - As Die-hard as they come
Saliva - Unleashed
Avenged Sevenfold - Beast and the harlot
Clutch - The mob goes wild
Deftones - Around the fur
Linkin Park - One step the closer
Pantera - Cowboys from hell

The best way to start is with crunches. The abs control everything else and make all other exercising easier. No matter what cardio exercises you are doing, you always have to add in ab work.

Swimming does it, no joke. I slacked off big time during my senior year, just ate and drank (yeah yeah I know) and get a big fat beer belly (not that big) and I'm paying for it now. I started swimming couple of months ago only 30 mins a day and started to use some elliptical machines like DDD mentioned and I've lost weight and the belly. I've heard from a lot of doctors, physicans and workout gurus or whatever that you shouldn't use the treadmill a whole lot. The treadmill is really bad for your knees. Use a bike or just jog, its a lot better. Honestly though, swimming is the BEST to lose weight.

Not to mention, running outdoors is 10x better. I always feel like a hamster on a wheel on the treadmill.

No "Perserverance" by Hatebreed? I swear---I think I can squat a Volkswagen when that album is playing.

P.S. At my gym, we call the treadmill girls "gerbils". I hate jogging, so I don't do it. I mountain bike, etc., but focus most of my efforts on weightlifting. If you limit your rest between sets, lifting can be a good cardio workout too. Plus, it retains muscle mass, thus reducing your bodyfat percentage.

For the ladies, or guys who want their ladies to look great, lifting for women doesn't make them look disgusting unless they're a) genetic freaks...or b) on steroids. Women who lift usually have very athletic figures...and each guy varies (some like a little flab around the posterior), but the fit look is kinda my thing. Gerbils usually have little muscle or tone.
