The biggest problem for most guys who want to eat better, is that its hard to be picky when you don't have many options available to you. Many of you guys have 8-5 jobs, some of us are college students with class through the day.... whatever the case, almost every guy has that one meal during the day where he finds himself eating *gasp* fast food.

While I know this seems like a daunting task, eating right while you're out CAN be accomplished. You just have to make yourself more knowledgeable on your choices.

One option is to bring your own lunch with you. This way, you can control everything you eat, because you know exactly what you're eating and what it has in it. The problem with this is, for many of us... bringing lunch to work just isn't going to happen. Maybe the lunchbox won't fit in the briefcase, or you just aren't blessed to have a cool place to store your vittles while you scurry through the mornings work. Don't worry. You're not lost.

Fast Food options: Forget about McDonald's. NOTHING, and I repeat NOTHING they carry should be something you would put in your mouth, except a diet coke (and I recommend cutting out soda if you're really serious about losing weight) and water. Don't let them fool you into thinking their salads are good for you; truth is McDonald's salads are about the fattiest salad on the market. No, Mickey D's can't even make salad without making it fat. Same goes for Burger King, Hardees, Carl's Jr, Jack-in-the-Box, etc.

If you are craving something beefy, Wendy's chili is actually not a bad option. There is good protein in the meat and beans, and not too many carbs, virtually no sugar. Don't eat it everyday, but its not a bad choice.

Fresh is good. Subway (NO Quizno's... Quizno's= the fatass' hoagie), Chick-fil-A, Moe's, Barbarito's (if you're blessed enough to have them) are all decent places to get a healthy meal. Also I'm sure you all have deli's.

What you want to remember is if you are going to eat bread, get the bread with the highest fiber possible. Whole grain is great if you can get it. Also if you must have it, limit your bread to 1 serving a day. Cut out the mayo... pay attention to your salad dressing, its a killer if you don't watch it. Don't be fooled just by seeing that something is low-fat or fat-free, sometimes those dressings have tons of sugar in them. Oil and Vinegar you can't go wrong with, but if thats not available, go with whatever light vinaigrette's they have, or Ranch and Blue Cheese. WATCH YOUR SALT INTAKE TOO! Too much salt will really hinder your ability to shed weight, as it causes you to retain water.

SPEAKING of water.... make sure you're drinking plenty of it. That eight 8 oz glasses stuff just isn't going to cut it. A guy my size (6'3" 225) should be drinking a gallon a day. Its really not that hard. Keep a good sized water bottle with you all day and you will see how extremely easy it is to drain that thing 4x a day.

But back to the food. Stick with chicken, fish (ALL GRILLED, no fried) and try to limit your beef. If you like Sushi, thats an excellent choice as well.

Tips on foods to keep with you as snacks:

Tuna: God bless whoever first produced Tuna packed in water, it gives you plenty of nutrition and cannot hurt your diet at all.

Nuts: Cashews, Peanuts, Pistachio's etc... UNSALTED and no honey roasted BS either. These will give you energy AND curb your appetite throughout the day.

Cheese sticks: Bet you haven't eaten these since you were a kid.... but they are a great hunger killer and give you protein, which = energy.

There you go guys, just a few pointers from a guy who once lost 100lbs inside of 18 months.

You can be creative too...some fast food restaurants have options...I was traveling the other day and could only find a Wendy's, so I ordered two kid's turkey and cheese meals w/ fruit cups and milk...I skipped the bread and chowed down on turkey, cheese, fruit, and milk. Fast food restaurants are getting better, but you may have to throw some of your meal away...

Like DDD said, best bet is to bring your own food if at all possible...if you're eating healthy, low-cal stuff, you can really eat a lot of food and not be that hungry...I eat at my desk all friggin' day...it's just high-protein and/or low-cal foods, so I can afford to eat a lot.

Thanks guys! I'm in the process now of starting the ole diet thing and what you just shared with us is enough to make a grown man want to cry. But I'm going to give it a shot! I just need to lose about 15 pounds. Thanks again!

Good post, DDD. "Men's Health" magazine gives Chick-fil-A an A+ in it's rating of fast-food restaurants. There is not a single sandwich there that exceeds 500 calories. Mickey D's burgers average well over 1,000.

Dan, what kind of cheese sticks are you talking about?

Yes, Chick-fil-A does a good job of keeping pretty reasonable items on the menu, however for those of you that enjoy eating there, you SHOULD beware:

Polynesian sauce, as delicious as it is... is extremely fattening.

Mozzarella sticks are my favorite.... you can get them at the grocery store in the cheese section, they usually make them individually wrapped for snacks (kids love 'em). I'm not big on the low-fat cheese, cheese is good for you, no need to water it down.

Borden, Kraft, etc... they all make them.

Damn. I've had those before, but I was hoping you were talking about the appetizers at Outback.

FYI, I'm on my 7th bottle of water today. And I've peed 12 times. Also, my body is acutely aware that I've not had caffeine in over 24 hours. So much so that I may have to tell my wife "Not tonight, dear, I have a headache."

Excellent  Well, except that last part

Great stuff guys. Of course, like most everyone, it's the New Years and I made the same resolution that most everyone has made.

One thought I had though is to cut my intake of alcohol. Granted, it's easier to say than do....but a question I have is if instead of drinking 4-5 beers (on the average night, when it's the weekend and we get real rowdy....it can be a whole lot more as I'm sure most of you know).......would it be better calorie wise to just take a few shots during the course of the night? I'm not a big liquor person so I don't see this one hurting and I cut sodas out of my diet months ago so I wouldn't be doing the bourbon and coke thing either.....anyone know?

Anyway....good luck to everyone. I ride my bike every day and find that helps alot. My issue isn't building muscles or anything like that....I don't mind having an average build. It's just shedding the pounds. I'm 6'0" and 205.....I'd like to get it down to 190-195 which is actually a very realistic goal w/good dieting I think. Cutting down on beer would probably help me achieve my goal w/out even changing my food intake :D

Good question. I'm actually trying to not drink at all this month (January), but normally i try to avoid drinking during the week and saving it for the weekend. When I do on the weekends, I usually go with bourbon and diet coke. I can drink it slower and get a buzz off of less of them. Beers: I stick to Miller Lite (1/2 the carbs and 2x the taste of bud light ) as well as Guinness (I'll bet you didn't know that Guinness IS a light beer).

Cutting down on beer always helps. 15 lbs is very doable... hell if you did my diet you could get that inside a month.

I think it's the drinking and the late night snacking that have been getting me. Guess I'll try to go for the shots or mixed drinks. Hell one or two good LITs will get the job done anyway. haha

the problem with alcohol is that it limits your body's ability to burn fat...it's not necessarily the type of alcohol you have (although some are indeed higher in carbs and calories)...all alcohol signals your body to retain fat, so even a light beer can do damage to your weight loss efforts.

The only fast food that I can stomach is Arby's roast beef sandwich dry.

True, which is why its best to not drink at all while you're trying to lose weight.

Dieting without exercise is self-defeating.

Yeah, good tips here. I almost always bring in my own lunches, which are usually leftovers from the previous night. So it's pretty much a hodgepodge of meals for me during the week - usually healthy, sometimes not so much! Generally, though, it's good stuff. Often my meals are grilled chicken or pasta-based, so really it's not the weekday lunches or dinners that is the problem, it's either the alcohol or the weekend binges (going to pubs for a burger, pizza, etc.).

One big downfall if you're snacking during the day is the type of snack - I was at one point eating nuts (cashews usually) quite a lot but at some point this got replaced by chocolate. Bad move, of course, but I am quite literally addicted to chocolate, usually of the very fattening, very whole-milk variety. That definitely needs to stop, but with a World Market nearby I am not sure if I can help myself.

I was just doing a preview for you:laugh:

You should not change your diet to lose weight. You should change your diet to eat healthier and combine this with exercise to change your lifestyle and thus you will lose weight as a result and keep it off.

You are absolutely correct. You should think of changing your eating habits as "going on a diet," rather, you should think of it as CHANGING your diet. When you have the mindset that you are on a temporary program to lose weight, you are much more likely to fail, however if you think of healthy eating as a lifestyle, and learn how to make good choices, you will never have a problem eating because you automatically know what to eat. It's not a several week long thing that you have to do, it's a lifestyle.
