I like the way new AD Jeff Long has conducted this process of finding a new coach by keeping names interviewed out of the newspaper. He's playing it close to his vest, just like Doyle Brunson does at a poker table.
There have been names brought up by both national and local media that has it's ups and downs to who would be better for the Hogs needs for a long time future. I think this is a very important hire for Jeff Long. It's going to be the thing Razorbacks fans will look back on to see if indeed he was the right choice to replace long time AD and former coach Frank Broyles. I think Long feels the heat and I admire him not to rush into this very important decision.

Names that has been mention and realistic coaches that's a possibility.

Just smoke and mirrors

They may be a coach X, that's not on the list and will blow fans minds if hired. I don't know, with the new AD and all. These are the top guys I feel that has a real chance to be the next coach. And remember, whoever is selected by Long please take note, It's not one head coach that takes programs to a higher level, it's the people he surrounds himself with. The staff is the key and important for fans to remember. We are looking for much more that a replacement of Houston, we're have to face the fact we lost some darn good assistants to Ole Miss as well.

I dont know much about the types of QB Arkansas has, but if they have any gun slingers that have played the west cost/spread in high school, Leach would be a awesome fit in Arkansas, but would suck for other teams. This guy is a offensive genius in todays age. I highly doubt Cowher would coach in the college game. If the Carolina Panthers fire John Fox, I'd look for Cowher to take that position as he loves being in North Carolina.

No offence but Leach would set Razorback football back 10 years if he got the job. SEC defenses would jack him every Saturday. That sort of offense may be great for West Texas, and the Tex-Mex style there, but At Arkansas we are looking for a balance attack. the spread is a solid style, but Leach doesn't think run as most good spread coaches does.

Leach is a coordinator with a Head coach title. He will never win the Big 12 unless he adds some running game, like the previous esteemed poster pointed out, and hires omeone that knows what the purpose of a defense is.

The spread western Texas circus is not what we are looking for. We seen yesterday what happens with that sort of offense. The nations top offense, (Tulsa) got their asses handed to them by a quick defense. SEC defenses are much faster. As my brown nosing esteem colleague above mention, "omeone that knows what the purpose of a defense is." Whatever that means.

No matter who comes here, coaching is simple. You install an offense that utilizes what you've got.

Spread, West Coast, I-formation (running), and Flex offenses are primarily built as "system" offenses. Meaning some coaches don't encourage players to improvise. That's when these systems get beat. Or any offense for that matter.

So you might have a coach who prefers passing out of the spread, but if you don't have a great QB, and some young and questionable WR's, but you have two great RB's. You probably don't run much spread that year.

That's part of the reason Bobby Bowden was so good for so long. Some years they ran the spread (or at least it looked like it), some the pro formation, some the I-formation. Probably others too. A good coach adapts to his talent.

So I wouldn't have an issue with Leach if he doesn't try to cram a "system" where it wouldn't fit. I mean I would dread the spread, (snicker), with our current team, but if we recruited a QB and some wideouts, why not?

All of the above? Goes for defense as well. Coaching really is easy.

The latest I can gather from plodding through all the crap posted is that it is between Bowden and Malzahn. Hopefully they will name someone soon, whoever it is.

So then who fills the shoes at Clemson if Tammy leaves?(and I can't help but find some sense of irony if Arkansas settles for Tammy Bowden instead of Tommy Tuberville).

No. Actually it was the best thing to happen for USC. Scott can't coach a turd out of his own bowels, no matter how many cherry pies he eats. He nearly single-handedly destroyed what football program the Gamecocks had. Which explains why he would make a great HC for the Tigers......

Although it did irk quite a few of us that he became the Tiger's OC immediately after wrecking us.....

ESPN - Arkansas may offer Bowden $2 million annually to replace Nutt - College Football (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3140601)

I'm not big on a Malzahn return. If he really wanted this job, why didn't he stay and tough out a situation to wait for Nutt to go. It seemed pretty inevitable even before he and his cronies (Mustain and receiving corps) left. Those two departures flipped the switch to overload.

I don't want a guy who runs away at the first sign of trouble. Besides I don't think the UofA would open that can of worms. Then again, I would have bet money the Mississippi rumors were bunk. I mean, who doesn't write into the buy-out that the coach can't go in-conf. for another job?
