Bower getting fired is a real jaw-dropper. What does Southern Miss expect? That guy is Golden Eagles football. That is really, really shocking to me. Especially considering that one of his daughters is buried in Hattiesburg and he's made it clear that Hattiesburg is his home repeatedly.

The odd thing is that I remember UGA turning back flips trying to land Chan in Athens. God I am glad they didn't. Dooley dodged a bullet there.

Dooley wanted to keep Donnan over Richt too.... good thing we didn't do that either. Dooley was a great coach, not the greatest AD.

I agree Dooley has made some bad decisions as AD.
Ironically - one of the reasons Donnan got fired was for losing to Tech.
Donnan is such a bubba. Can't believe he lasted as long as he did.

Real shocker about Bower. He passed up numerous offers over the years. He is a class act.

Haha yeah, as if Ole Miss would be interested in hiring some young whippersnapper who has been calling plays for just one season.

Muschamps name has come up with the OM job.

What in the world does Southern Miss think they are doing.
Bower has won consistently in a small state with 3 D-1 programs.
If they think they are going to find someone who will do better than Bower, they must be smoking the hippie lettuce.

The Ole Miss Chancellor has openly stated that he wants a coach with head coaching experience this time.
IE: Muschamp will not be that person. He may get a Head Coaching offer but the big money boys in Oxford will get a former head coach this time.

Well, a big money boy's personal jet left Oxford this morning and touched down later at the Auburn airport.
Spying on people's flights is fun. Message board pasttime.
Honestly, what name hasn't come up with the Ole Miss job yet?
Houston Nutt, according to sources, has just been let go from Arkansas, so he is obviously in the running, and I think would be a good coach.
Rick Nueheisel is definitly on the radar, and I'd be happy to get him. He's an excellent OC and after being a quarterback coach, he can progress Snead even more.
Another name I like hearing, but I'm not 100% sure if he's a candidate, is Mike Leach. He could bring a good spread offense into Ole Miss which was effective against LSU and MSU (though both were "L's")
Muschamp would be too big of a risk, without head coaching experience he could turn out like a Coach O, minus the taking the shirt off.
WE DO NOT WANT FRANCIONE. PLEASE NO.

What about Mike Price at OM? And Bower being fired was a shock. They are extremely stupid in Hattiesburg apparently.

Then your Chancellor is not up to speed....
He was on WHBQ radio in Memphis this morning and was specific that they are not looking for an Assistant Coach....they want a Coach with a few years of head coaching experience.
By the way, tracking planes doesn't work in recruiting either....

.they want a Coach with a few years of head coaching experience.
That's what they said before they hired Coach O too.

Donnan is such a bubba. Can't believe he lasted as long as he did.The real irony is that he lost his final game (some bowl game or another) thanks to the stupid celebration penalty pushed through by--Vince Dooley.

1. Fired Cutcliffe and
2. Hired Orgeron

That's what they do in Hattiesburg. Ask Afroman.

My favorite part of today so far...
Findabum has gone from one week reporting CTT to Texas A&M as a sure thing.
To now us offering CTT a lifetime contract...
I often wonder if anyone actually keeps up with his batting average on stories he reports. Maybe he is a good fielder.....

I was shocked when I heard that Bower had been fired. Wow. They'll never get another guy like Bower. Anyone that luck into that is better will bolt from USM in a heart beat. Bower was good AND loyal. One of the most loyal head coaches I've ever seen. And he was a winner, he is a nice guy by all accounts, and he had an excellent graduation rate. The folks down in Hattiesburg are certainly smoking something.
I wouldn't put too much stock into any claims Boone makes about what they want from their next head coach. They said all the same things when they hired Orgeron. Right when the search started there were about three MUST HAVES a coach had to have before they would hire him. By the end of the process, they hired O who had NONE of those things. And then look at Boone this season with his complete support one week and firing the next. Don't believe a word that comes out of that man's mouth. I'd be seriously afraid if I was an Ole Miss fan that that man was AD during another coaching search.

I don't doubt that he did. But it wasn't his choice. It happens all the time. USM told him to quit or they would fire him. Simple as that. Just because the official line is "quit" doesn't mean he wasn't fired.

Its a shame if he was fired considering all the times that bigger and better paying jobs were offered to him that he turned down.

Frankly, I think both Jeff Bower and Chan Gailey would be very good coaches at Ole Miss. Both are good, solid coaches and fine men that won't embarrass the university. I think that sort of person is who Ole Miss should be seeking out with this particular hire.
On a more personal note, in my 9th grade year my high school team lost one game in the regular season to Americus, and in the 2nd round of the playoffs to eventual class B state champion, Roswell. The QB for Americus that year was Chan Gailey, and the QB for Roswell was Jeff Bower. Rather interesting that 39 years later they get fired from college HC jobs on the same day.

It's going to be tougher then most think...
Bower was making around $400,00 as USM head coach the last time I saw.
I can name six co-ordinators in the SEC that make more.

Tyrone Nix will be the next head coach at USM.. Maybe we can pick up John Tenuta from GT.. that is my hope anyway

I'd have to disagree. Jeff Bower, though a great coach at USM, would not be accustomed to coaching at an SEC school, which unlike USM, is on a much larger scale and much more competition. I think Bower would be better on being an assistant somewhere for a year or so at an SEC school, and then looking for a HC job.
And Chan I just flat out would not want. He isn't a bad coach, but GT is anything but an exemplary team, and I don't think Chan would do well in the SEC.

As a student at USM, I had no idea that Bower was close to being fired. He has done great things at USM, and does not make crap. If USM plans to get some one big in here they better be ready to spend some money. I would like to see Larry Fedora in here (not just because I'm a Gator fan), I have also heard Major Applewhite's name thrown around. Bower was never at USM for money, he did it because he loved the university. It's had to recruit in a state that has 2 sec schools in it plus LSU and Alabama are right down the road. It makes me sad to see him go, but I'm sure that something positive will come out of it.

Both would be a step up from what you just had. BTW, USM was the best program in Mississippi while Bower was there. He beat Bama more than Ole Miss did. Heck, Ole Miss wouldn't play 'em.

It depends on what time period you are talking about. Bower was coach for 17 years. Most of that time period either Ole Miss or State was a better team. Only on a few occasions could you argue that USM was the best. And even then we'll never know because State and Ole Miss don't play USM.
