View Full Version : GEORGIA in the National Championship?

So, the BCS is not out yet, but as of this post, Georgia is #4 in both the AP and Coaches Poll.
Two of the three teams in front of us have to play another game.
#2 Missouri vs #8 Oklahoma (Big 12 Championship)
Pittsburgh vs #1 West Virginia
If both Missouri and West Virginia lose, Georgia has a legitimate shot at play for the BCS National Championship.
# 7 LSU losing the SEC championship game would ensure they don't get a boost to jump over us.
And one more thing..
An argument could be made that a team that can't win its conference doesn't belong in the National Championship. However, in 2003 Oklahoma did make it to the BCS National Championship even when they lost the Big 12 championship game to Kansas State.
Go Dawgs!!!!!!!!!
Of course it's POSSIBLE.... but you need Pitt to beat WVU, and that is about as likely as OSU playing a tough team in their regular season. Pitt is 4-7 right now, with their biggest win coming over Cincy.

I don't think so... the coaches poll has us at #4 and LSU at #7, and the BCS will likely look like the coaches poll.... 3 spots is a long way to jump this late in the season.

yea I wonder how they look in the bcs... maybe marky 4 coach of the year turning that team around and motevating them to be what they are now

He was in the running last I saw... I think with as young as the team is and overcoming losses to SC and UT to finish (likely) number 3 in the nation at 10-2 (possibly 11-2 after bowl) is a great candidate for coach of the year.

Well its 2007 and how many #1 or #2 teams lost to unranked opponents?
Lets see...
#2 USC lost to Stanford (3-8)
#1 Ohio State lost to Illinois (9-3) [unranked at the time]
#2 South Florida lost to Rutgers (7-4)
#2 Oregon lost to Arizona (5-6)
#1 LSU lost to Arkansas (8-4)
There might be one or two I forgot but I think i made my point. Anything can happen in this football season
Like I said... it's possible... but highly unlikely.

Like it or not, WVU will play Ohio St. in the Championship game. I don't like it as I think there are at LEAST 10 teams better than them this year, but that's the way it will play out.

As of right now it's Missouri vs. WVU.

I think UGA needed to put a bigger thumping on unranked GT to make enough of a move to be positioned for NCG consideration.

Mizzou will NOT beat Oklahoma. If OUs QB hadn't gone down vs. TTU, they would be playing for the title. Takes luck someimes.

I don't think any score against GT would have given us consideration... but 31-17 on the #7 defense in the country is pretty good. What we really needed was to get to Atlanta and beat LSU to jump Ohio State.

Getting our butts whipped by UT is what turned our season around:laugh:

Exactly. You can thank UT for keeping you from playing for it all this year. They'll never jump you over tOSU without an extra game, and WVU is not losing the backyard brawl...
Looks like WVU and tOSU for the title.

It'll be interesting to see how it turns out if LSU wins out. LSU is #5 in the harris poll and will likely have a higher Computer Avg. A win against Tennessee would likely help the computer avg even more.
You may also see pollsters change thier votes for LSU and UGA if LSU wins the SEC, because the conference champion would be more deserving than a team that didn't win thier conference.
We'll just have to wait and see.

Well, LSU is #7 in the BCS standings now and UGA is #4. The voters have never penalized a team because they didn't win their conference... remember Oklahoma?
That would be cool, but I doubt Pitt will beat WVA

I understand, but the gap between LSU and UGA in the BCS is about 0.05. A win the SEC Championship game would probably give LSU the edge they'd need to jump UGA, but I don't think they'll be able to jump Ohio State.

I am sorry but I have no idea what is going on here, I have been out of sync with who's playing who, so is it Georgia vs LSU in the SEC championship
No. LSU VS UT
UGA and UT tied, but UT beat UGA in Knoxville.

Yeah, but all we hear since then is how that was wrong and never should have happened. They even changed the BCS formula to keep it from happening again, it was the computers that put OU in the title game. An 11-2 SEC Champ would go to the CG ahead of a 10-2 Georgia.

This is the real kicker. Is it possible for UGA to play for a national title? I suppose in some very distant scenarios they could. I was against OU going to the title in 2003, and that was with them only losing 1 game AND making it to their conference championship game. The 07 Bulldogs have 2 losses and won't even go to Atlanta, so yeah, it's possible. Should it happen? Absolutely not.

I think that the scenario that happened last year could happen this year. If Mizz loses to Oklahoma, it would come down to UGA, WVU, and tOSU. After what an SEC team did to tOSU last year, it wouldn't surprise me if they gave UGA the nod. The only thing working against them is not winning their conference championship. I am curious to see how it plays out.

ummm.... where the heck is Grady when you need him?!?
He'll be able to shed some light on the "Georgia unranked now 3 spots ahead of #7 LSU at #4 going to the National Championship and finishing no worse than number #2 when the bowls are finished because UT hasn't played anyone all year and won't" dilema
