"I don't regret my decision to come here. I learned things that will make me stronger as a person."
--Brent Schaeffer
Well said. Much was asked of him and much more expected. In truth I didn't expect a lot but hoped for it anyway. Last season started well at Memphis, but as it turned out, Memphis was pretty bad. As the season went along and Ole Miss played better teams it became clear that this would not be Eli Manning and big results. Brent's throwing was much like mystery stew. You didn't know what it would be like till you tried it. Most of the time, it wasn't very good. In short, we lost over and over.
But this is not about winning or losing games but about a young man winning in the real world. I was sure Schaeffer would leave Ole Miss and just hang it up after he was benched, but, he didn't. He stayed around, kept practicing, worked hard, did the things he had to do, and he waited. Waiting, perhaps the hardest thing in the world to do. Everyone had him branded as a failure. As a football player it just didn't work. But Brent showed some real guts. He didn't give up and worked through the bad times and now has a second chance at proving he could play SEC football. Now there is no way one game can change last sason, but, it just might change our memories of Brent Schaeffer. Here's hoping that this young man can have one hell of a good game against Mississippi State, and can go out as he began, a winner. But if he isn't able to give us a victory, he himself has already won, he survived failure and came back for more. To me, that is the sign of a winner, in life.
