I recently saw a thread mentioning the "greatest rivalry in college football", and it made me think a little... In state rivalries ALWAYS have more fuel in the fire than any others.
The Mich and OSU fans don't even have to listen to the other team's bullshit all year long. They simply go back to their home state and don't see another Buckeye/Wolverine fan for another whole year. Let me tell you, that would be nice.
I, on the other hand have to stare at bama stealing all the sports news away from the state, since they have more fans. (what saban eats for dinner is a bigger story than Groves getting hurt  ) AU and bama fans both have to listen to the garbage all over the radio. Hosts praising the other team. Random callers putting down your team. It is hard to have a serious football conversation with a bama fan for me, because most of them will somewhere along the way start talking about how bama will beat the crap out of us this year... :glare:
For the most part, we get along during the year. (although a ton of us don't; there have been more stabbings and fights caused by the Iron Bowl than any other game) But it sure gets old, having to put up with the guy that works next to you; to watch bama flags fly all day long on your neighbors lawn; to listen to that drunk bama fan that never shuts up about how they are greater than us; etc. It goes both ways, and I think the hatred builds up all year.
In my case (living in alabama), this is all we have. We have no NFL, MLB, or NBA teams. This is what us sports fans live for year in and year out. The Iron Bowl is THE game of the year. Nothing else matters. I didn't even bother to watch OSU/Mich last year when they were ranked #1 & #2 (ok, I did watch during the commercials and halftime :closedeye) But none of that mattered, because if we lost, we would have to hear about it ALL. YEAR. LONG. If the buckeyes or wolverines lose, they have the Bengals, the Browns, the Lions, the Reds, the Indians, the uh.... -insert NBA team here-'s, etc. (probably some hockey fans up there too)
But now the time has come! THE IRON BOWL IS ONCE AGAIN UPON US! NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. THIS IS AUBURN vs. ALABAMA!
This is not a game. This, is what we live for.
WAR DAMN EAGLE!
