View Full Version : IRON BOWL: The Truth

I recently saw a thread mentioning the "greatest rivalry in college football", and it made me think a little... In state rivalries ALWAYS have more fuel in the fire than any others.

The Mich and OSU fans don't even have to listen to the other team's bullshit all year long. They simply go back to their home state and don't see another Buckeye/Wolverine fan for another whole year. Let me tell you, that would be nice.

I, on the other hand have to stare at bama stealing all the sports news away from the state, since they have more fans. (what saban eats for dinner is a bigger story than Groves getting hurt  ) AU and bama fans both have to listen to the garbage all over the radio. Hosts praising the other team. Random callers putting down your team. It is hard to have a serious football conversation with a bama fan for me, because most of them will somewhere along the way start talking about how bama will beat the crap out of us this year... :glare:

For the most part, we get along during the year. (although a ton of us don't; there have been more stabbings and fights caused by the Iron Bowl than any other game) But it sure gets old, having to put up with the guy that works next to you; to watch bama flags fly all day long on your neighbors lawn; to listen to that drunk bama fan that never shuts up about how they are greater than us; etc. It goes both ways, and I think the hatred builds up all year.

In my case (living in alabama), this is all we have. We have no NFL, MLB, or NBA teams. This is what us sports fans live for year in and year out. The Iron Bowl is THE game of the year. Nothing else matters. I didn't even bother to watch OSU/Mich last year when they were ranked #1 & #2 (ok, I did watch during the commercials and halftime :closedeye) But none of that mattered, because if we lost, we would have to hear about it ALL. YEAR. LONG. If the buckeyes or wolverines lose, they have the Bengals, the Browns, the Lions, the Reds, the Indians, the uh.... -insert NBA team here-'s, etc. (probably some hockey fans up there too)

But now the time has come! THE IRON BOWL IS ONCE AGAIN UPON US! NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. THIS IS AUBURN vs. ALABAMA!

This is not a game. This, is what we live for.

Well, you do know your gonna have to live another week right? We've got ULM before we arrive in Auburn.

Also, am I the only one who feels it shouldn't be called the Iron Bowl any longer? We don't play in Birmingham anymore...

that's not exactly true. can't speak for michigan, but there are loads of wolverines fans here in ohio (even in columbus) and every buckeye fan knows or works with some obnoxious michigan fan, so you definitely hear about it if you lose to Big Blue. i won't even start on the local media. we do have an NHL and an MLS team, but they both suck and nobody really cares, so the focus is still 100% osu/michigan around here.

all that said, i still think that the Iron Bowl is the #1 rivalry in college football, and here's why: too many michigan fans have told me that the team they REALLY hate is michigan state. that must mean something...

the truth is it was "relegated" to the ESPN Night game after CBS passed on it. But, I like the ESPN Night Game better anyway.

Yes, you might be the only one. Regardless of where its played this is always one of the most hard fought, down to the wire games played every year. I think Iron Bowl is, was and hopefully always will be the name.

it just wouldn't be right if it's not call the Iron Bowl...I know we don't play in Bham anymore but it's just tradition to call it the Iron Bowl...I will always call it that even if they do change it

Of course I know it's another two weeks. BUT I CAN FEEL IT IN THE AIR. It's all I can think about when football enters my mind nowadays.

And I've already started drinking.

If it wasn't the Iron Bowl, what else would it be? The battle for the Foy Sportsmanship Trophy? lol, please....

I don't know who coined the phrase, the Iron Bowl, but it seems we will always think of this game by that title. I always do, too. It's kind of eccentric of us and silly and just one more piece of lore. I like it, though.

There is much more hatred in the Egg Bowl than Ohio State & Michigan. :D

Especially when you're in high school! I don't think a day has gone by this past couple of weeks where I haven't started arguing with a barn fan about how much Bama sucks

Right there with you bro. Highschool is the worst place to go when it comes to Alabama/Auburn arguments.

Yep, we have the same deal here in Mississippi. No other teams to pull for, no pro sports. And we have to live with each other, day in and day out. If your team loses the Egg Bowl, you know you are going to be in for it at work, church, school, whatever. And MSU and UM are usually on about the same level. I remember the year MSU went 2-10...but we beat Ole Miss that year. That was a good season. :D

END THE STREAK!!!!

That is all.

Forget ending it, I say we splinter it into a thousand pieces so that only the most advanced Auburn grad in engineering will be able to figure out how to put it back together again (so that's like 3 pieces, I know). This year Auburn goes back to just being Auburn. RTR.

We may not play in Birmingham anymore, but it has just become tradition to call it "The Iron Bowl"...because that is where the rivalry originated. I'll always call it the Iron Bowl as long as I live. I can't wait till next Saturday! RTR

Im sorry that we have dominated our rivals so much that they dont want to be our rivals anymore!
