View Full Version : The cold weather argument

Up here in Big 10 world, when one of their schools gets crushed by a SEC or PAC-10 team, we hear a lot of nonsense in the media about how those conferences don't play 'real' football because they've never played a game when you can see your breath.
it's a lame argument and i don't buy it for a minute, but it does make me curious: when was the last time your team played a game in cold weather and how did they fare?

<<<loves cowherd. he's hilarous, but he says things just to get callers riled up. he'll say the SEC is the best one week and say they're overrated the next. he cracks me up.

Tennessee was playing South Carolina in 93 and it was cold and rainy and we kicked their butt 55-3 . I was at that game and boy was it cold ! but it made no difference.

He's not a moron. He says things to get a rise out of people from time to time, but he knows more about what he's talking about than most people with ESPN.

The guy is like the sports version of a shock jock. He says things to get ratings high. I've been to one of his broadcasts and he talked sports with the crowd during commercials, took questions and all, and the guy really seems to have a good head on his shoulders as far as football goes.

Knowshon continues to blow us all away. It's been awhile since we've had a player that electrified everyone here the way he does. He's the talk of the whole school, in conversation, publications, the media, you name it. He ran for 100+ yards and 2 TD's against Auburn.
You guys had a helluva game too... hanging 50 on South Carolina was impressive. I know they've been going downhill but still... 50 points. Damn.

Colin Cowherd announced his show last friday from the Tate Center across the street from Sanford Stadium. I was there and the guy is a down to earth cool person. He talked to the crowd and talked about how athens was in his top college towns in the nation and also said UGA is a darkhorse with great players. He speaks the truth. The teams like OSU IOWA and NEBRASKA have to sell their programs. Its cold and miserable up there with nothing to do. Schools like UF, UGA, and Southern or west coast schools have more lure becuase of weather. The northern and cold weather schools arent going to be able to entice these kids to get into their programs as easily as it was before. I love Cowherd and his show generates great talk show radio. As for the weather thing i think its true that some teams just cant play in bad weather. If Hawaii played in Boston i think they would be terrible becuase of the weather, its all about how teams are built. Cold weather teams need to be physical and tough, thus i feel running the ball is more the style for the cold rainy or snowy games.

You too?? I was standing directly in front of him about 3 people back. I was the guy who asked coach Richt about Auburn's rush defense.

I live in Chicago and I think this is a dumb argument because it really does not get that cold up here until January. Last year it was not cold until February. By January and February all college games are either done or played in a warm weather bowl location. Last I checked Chicago, Madison, and New York were not hosting any bowl games.

Kentucky plays some hella cold games.
Fact is this is college football, not the NFL. There are no teams worth mentioning in Green Bay or Minnesota.
How many college teams actually play in these sub-zero games anyway? Minnesota plays in a dome.

Not many college teams do play in the cold temps, but the schools get cold in the winter. Where would a 17 yr old kid from the south want to go to school? A school in wisconsin or southern california. . .it is a little harder for them to recruit up north. Its probably not just weather though, more women in places like gainesville and los angeles.
Im not sure if it would make a difference in football or not, correct me if im wrong, but in the World Series this year they talked about how the pitching is different in colorado because of the elevation. Would that apply to football too or is the ball too heavy?

In Colorado the baseball carries farther because the air is thinner. I'm not sure that would have any effect on a football, because a baseball is far more dense than a Football is.

I believe the only argument you can make about hot or cold weather is the humidity. If anything the cold weather benefits players. For example, its easier to lose stamina in the heat and to also dehydrate. Dehydration in the muscles eventually leads to the primary sideline "injury" in football...cramps.
If I were playing, I would take a cold northern night rather than a humid southern night.

I think the weather always plays a role in the games. True, we aren't used to Yankee weather, but they aren't used to the heat here. I think if it is not a snow bowl, the players probably enjoy a little of the cold weather, now and then. Just not frigid! A cold rain is the worst, in my opinion.

I agree with Aza, the weather factor is minimal. The reason why the SEC has better teams is the athletes live in Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas. They want to play close to home. Weather is a part of that because they want to stay in the temperature they are used to but definitely not a major part.

Just as a reminder, too... where do they think all those families who now live in the South migrated from? Florida's population didn't go from 3 million to 18 million in 25 years because everybody started getting laid a lot, and the state outlawed condoms... they all fled the weather up north. That's why the recruiting has boomed... more people.

If the weather argument has any validity then the north should get better recruits as the polar ice caps melt and the weather turns warmer in the north. I will keep an eye out for this fluctuation and let you know. I think in a million years Michigan will be as warm as Florida and will have some hot recruits.

Minnesota is building a brand new 75,000 seat outdoor stadium in downtown Minneapolis set to open in 2010.
Being from the north, I buy the cold weather arguement. I have played football in 100 degree weather and in 10 degree weather. Cold weather sucks and while it doesn't take away physical abilities, it does effect your mental preparation for the game. Getting hit or tackled in cold ass weather frickin hurts a lot more than if its hot outside. All of your joints ache a lot more and if you smash your fingers againist someones shoulder pads, you feel like there going to break off. Cold weather messes with your head and your focus on what you are trying to do. Northern teams are more prepared for this scenario and I firmly believe that if somehow an SEC team played in cold weather (10-20 degrees) it would affect the way they play. But it will never happen because if a SEC team were to play an OOC game north of the mason dixon line, it would be during early September when it is still 80 to 90 degrees up here.

I could buy into this argument if we were talking about the senior football league. They would be more likely to break a hip in cold weather, but I think 18, 19, 20 year old kid's bodies can handle it.
