Trevor Gaskins set the Ole Miss freshman record with seven 3-pointers in his Rebel debut.

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — True freshman Trevor Gaskins hit seven of Ole Miss' 13 3-pointers as the Rebels easily defeated Mississippi Valley State 97-63 in both team’s season opener Saturday at Tad Smith Coliseum.

In his first career game, Gaskins finished one shy of the school record of eight 3-pointers in a game, set by Keith Carter in 1998. The freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., finished with 21 points on seven of 10 shooting from long range.

Five Rebels scored in double figures on the afternoon, as David Huertas scored 12 points, Kenny Williams had 11 and Dwayne Curtis and Chris Warren each scored 10.

MVSU was led by Carl Lucas’ 14 points. Eric Petty scored 13 and Wayne Parks added 12.

Ole Miss took control of the game with a 10-0 run that began at the 12:06 mark of the first half and expanded a 15-8 lead. Gaskins hit a pair of 3-pointers on the run, and Ole Miss’ lead was never smaller than 12 points after that.

Ole Miss shot 56.7 percent in building a 41-24 halftime lead. MVSU got as close as 12 at the 17:11 mark of the second half, but Ole Miss responded with a 10-2 run.

Ole Miss outrebounded MVSU 25-13 in the first half and 42-27 in the game. Williams had a game-high nine rebounds and Curtis had eight.

Ole Miss hosts South Alabama Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Just got back from the game at the Tad Pad. Gaskins was locked in the entire game and was really fun to watch. Huertas got chewed out up and down the court by Kennedy for stupid decision making, and I thought Kennedy was going to rip his face off when he didn't jog off the court after being yanked.

They're going to be a fun team to watch all year.

I agree whole heartedly. I wanted to go to the game but had to find a spot to go deer hunting next weekend while I had a day off :biggrin2:. I listened to the game from my truck and the team really sounded like they were clicking today, especially the big men. Proud to see we might have a sharpshooter replacement for Sanders from last season. I can't wait till SEC play rolls around. Hotty Toddy!
