Taking into consideration placekicking, punting, and kick coverage, who has the overall best and worst special teams in the conference?

I can't say who is the best, for sure, but you could definitely make a case for Florida. We're second in the SEC on kickoff returns (24.7 ypr) behind Vandy's 25.4. Brandon James is second behind Arky's Jones for kickoff returns. He leads the SEC in punt returns, and is 5th in the nation. We're second in punting at 38.1 net yards per punt, behind AU's 39.8. Until a week or two ago, we had not allowed a single punt to get returned; and the average return against us at this point is less than 1 yard per return (.8). We're 6th in kickoff coverage. Kicking isn't as good as some, with 7-10 field goals, and 47 of 48 PAT's. I guess that's to be expected when you score mostly TD's.

USC has to be close to the worst.
I would have never thought of it going into the season as Succop is a great FG kicker and a pretty good punter, but this year he has been inconsistent.
Add to that the fact that USC has been a bad coverage team for years and you get a pretty bad Special Teams Unit.
Now, we haven't given up many big plays on kickoffs or punts, but that generally has been because we kick it short and seem to give the ball to the other team at the 35 or 40 yard line on a regular bases.
Succop is 12 for 16 in FG's (7th in the SEC), including a very key miss in the TN game.

LSU has to have the worst. We are average on kick return. We are bad on punt return. We have a good punter but our punting team is still bad. Our FG goal kicker is money as long as it isnt longer than 40 yards. I dont think we have had a touchback on kickoff all season but we can cover pretty well.

I agree...the Gamecocks are the worst.

South Carolina. Worst defense, worst offense and worst history.

I remember LSU guys saying that the reason for Miles going for a TD instead of the 37-yard FG against AU was because y'all's kicker was lousy. I looked that stuff up; and he's one of the best kickers in the conference. In fact, from that distance, he's 8-10. Much better odds than throwing a pass into coverage with time winding down. He's even 2-5 from 40-49 yards, which isn't bad at all.

I wouldn't call 40% from 40-49 "not bad at all."
Maybe if they were all from 49 yards it wouldn't be bad, but I am sure some came from the lower 40's and in major college football, anything from 45 in should be close to automatic IMHO. (Unless it has a realy hard angle or the line allows it to be blocked of course.)

Whoa now, when it comes to sloppy football, Ole Miss knows best.
We have featured such performances as an 8 yard punt, kicks out of bounds on kickoff, and our kicker tries desparately to kick it past the 20 on kickoff. Worse vote: Us.

LSU really sucks at kick and punt coverage. Last night, La Tech broke several kick/punt returns for big yardage. Tech almost broke a couple of them for TDs. The lack of adequate coverage scares me!
On the bright side, when Ryan Perrilloux is flushed out of the pocket, he is very dangerous. Last night, he threw a strike way down the field on one such occasion, and another time, he ran for pretty good yardage. I think he's going to be a good QB next year, providing he can stay out of trouble.

anyone ever notice how everyone always finds a flaw with special teams. it seems like every fan in the sec says "omg, i can't believe our special teams is this bad. we must have the worst special teams in the sec"...

I don't think Alabama's are the best or worst, but we might have the most improved special teams in the SEC. Ron Middleton has done a masterful job this year. Javier Arenas is one of the most explosive return guys in the SEC, but he gets a lot of help. The blocking is always superb. Fitzgerald needs to improve his net yards but he leads the SEC with most punts downed inside the 20. And Leigh Tiffin is finally living up to his potential. 4-4 against MSU with two FG's over 50 yards. Incredible. This is one area of our team in which we have improved greatly from where we were with Shula's staff.
