Hi folks,
As I said in my introduction post, I am a Yankee from Columbus. Fortunately for all of you, I am not a Buckeye apologist (hi KillerNut!).
In my town, we have this strange phenomenon in which some people who were born and raised here decide to walk around in head-to-toe Michigan gear. They've never set foot in Ann Arbor and they seem to delight in the annoyance they cause. I don't know if they just want to stand apart from everybody else or if they're just jerks. It never fails to get my blood boiling, though...
Does this happen in the South? If I went to a mall in Knoxville am I likely to see someone in a Gators shirt, and vice versa?
It happens so much here that I wonder if it is unique to us...

Yes it does. And it's been that way for years here. When Arkansas was a member of the Southwest Conference years ago. A lot of the African American community in Arkansas own tons of Texas gear. A lot like young people do today. BAck then I can recall that they didn't really get excited over Razorback success, but they also weren't like the haters we are seeing today in sending a negitive message to the program.
Bottom line is kids like the look of other schools gear. I too have own gear that I like the look of, North Carolina white cap with the powder blue UNC looked sweet to me. So as long as the local sporting good retailer sells it, the young people will but it. And if your ever in the woods needing to pinch one off, there's nothing like wiping with a Gamecock or Alabama shirt.

Well, the thugs and gangstas around here are likely to wear gear from whoever is winning at the time, or whichever team has the reputation for being thugs (i.e. Miami or F$U in college, and Oakland in the pros). Even if this wasn't Atlanta, Falcons gear would be popular with the thug crowd because of Vick. If you're in a mall in Atlanta, and see someone decked out in Orange and Blue, it's me. Just kidding... those people will have roots in Gainesville, or at the very least, Florida. Atlanta has the highest population of Gator fans outside of Florida, and the biggest Gator Alumni/Fan clubhouse.
It used to confuse me every time I saw someone wearing gear from a certain team; and when I asked them if they went there or lived near there, they said no. Often times, they'd just say they liked the colors, or the gear went with their ensemble.:barf: I hate that. I remember seeing F$U gear all over the place here in Georgia during the '90's, and I couldn't understand it. Then, I was told by several people that they wore it because they win a lot, and they liked how F$U had " 'tude ".:azz: Of course, " 'tude " means dirty and cheating, in this case. So, I guess some people just respected that they got away with a lot of stuff in the '90's.

Maize and Blue?? When did UM get street cred? I think here in Alabama the reasons are kinda different but it definately happens. In Auburn you will always see someone in Crimson and White that never touched the UA campus. But again it's a state rivalry and here(Alabama) you HAVE to chose sides regardless of what (if any) school you actually attended. I have only recently noticed alot of people wearing AU colors in Tuscaloosa though. Im sure that is a result of our recent success in general and the Iron Bowl in particular.
Growing up in North Ga though, the most popular teams for kids seemed to be Michigan, FSU, Notre Dame (go figure), and Miami. They were the winning programs at the time and I seriously doubt these kids had any other connection to these schools.

Now as others have mentioned..the gangster wannabes' will wear whatever team colors, but as to the normal hardcore fans I revert to the first part of my reply

I live in Big Teneleven country myself and we call fans of Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame and the like you describe "Wal-Mart [insert program here] Fans" cuz they buy their gear at Wal-Mart of the hot team and claim to be diehards until that team starts losing...then they go to Wal-Mart again.
Every team has these type fans but it's much more prevelant up here than down South, IMO.

That's funny stuff there, Big Teneleven, I like that.
Well it's going to get worst than before now that top notch athletes are now wearing other gear than their own, example, Labron James. The face of city of Cleveland, and he shows up at a MLB play-off game in Yankee gear, and they are playing the Yankees. Man, he may look back on that error one day. That could bring out some boo's from the homies.

In Mississippi, we sell nascar car tags. 90% of the ones you see on the road are on cars driven by young African Americans that have never watched a race. They just like the colors:brick:

Back about a decade ago when the Miami Hurricanes were a great program (yet very dirty), it was a fade all across the South to wear their gear.
A lot of people wore their stuff because of the colors and it was actually used as gang gear as well.
Reminds me a lot of people doing the same think with Oakland Raider gear actually.
