View Full Version : Why Tebow will take Heismen

It's s simple formula. He's good, he's a leader, he's tough and the key is, national exposer. No school will be on TV any more than Florida coming down the stretch as it's coming off a national championship. All the above equals Heismen win.

It can't hurt that he's a class act, and has a good background, personal history, etc.. He won't embarrass his school, the conference, or the game. I guess he's one of those feel-good stories the media likes to hype. I've got to admit, even if he wasn't a Gator, he'd be a breath of fresh air; after all the athlete horror stories lately.

I doubt a Sophomore wins it, deserved or not.

I think that's actually in Tebow's favor. It just adds to the story to be the first in history. And, the voters actually have a guy who's good enough to defend their position and vote.

I don't think he wins it for 3 reasons. 1) He is a sophomore. 2) His team is unlikely to compete for a national title. 3) Darren McFadden and Andre Woodson will take too many of the regional votes. If UF can somehow climb back into national title consideration, then his chances improve a lot. No doubt he is worthy, but considering the recent history of the award, that hardly matters.

In the Heisman watch thread I started ( http://www.sectalk.com/boards/sec-football-talk/22211-heisman-race-how-does-look.html ), I listed 5 different sites that have actual voters and analysts breaking it all down, and voting. If it were held today, every site would pick Tebow.

Does anybody care about the Heisman anymore except the players involved and fans of that team? I don't think so.

Of course. I think you may be the only person not interested. The whole time McFadden's name was being mentioned non-stop, just about everyone here was supportive of an SEC guy winning it.

I don't think he'll get it this year because I don't think Florida will win the SEC.

That's the key, winning the SEC. IF Florida wins out, I think he wins it. If not, he's a front runner for next year.

Not gonna happen, and I will be glad to eat crow if it does. They will not go back to the NC this year, probably not win the SEC, and he is a sophmore. Lots of great college players out there, lots of them seniors. He will be lucky to be playing at the end of the year if they keep running him like they do. I don't mean that maliciously by any means. Just my honest opinion.

If Florida wins out, and takes LSU out in the rematch Tebow will get the Heisman for sure.

He is indeed, a breath of fresh air in this whirlpool of horror stories. The most likely thing we hear, is how someone we admire was arrested and suspended from play. It is more unusual to see a player putting good, old-fashioned American values into use. It spreads, it is a rippling effect, and young kids get a positive influence in their lives as a result. Tebow is good news, in a murky atmosphere. We like him.

Glad he's a good kid but he wont get it this year for all the good reasons everyone has said.

Woodson is Sr. and showed great leadership and brought a team not prominent for football into the limelight.

As an aside, this from College Football Advisor (http://collegefootballadvisor.com)
5. That's why that Saban guy makes the big bucks- Alabama fans finally got the performance they wanted. Saban's Crimson Tide was fantastic against a good Tennessee team and showed the rest of the SEC they are for real. I would also like to welcome 'Bama QB John Parker Wilson to the fraternity of big time SEC quarterbacks. It is pretty cool club to be in, just ask Tim Tebow and Andre' Woodson.

I want to touch on something else about this young man. Tebow, if he wins the Heismen or not, is going to be the face of college football for the next two years. Yeah I said two. I think he;s one of those special people who will come back for his senior year. He's a college guy that loves the college atmosphere and all it offers. It seems to fit him to a tee.
I have no problem with him being the poster boy for NCAA football. Like the other guy said, he won't embarrass the conference or the game. Been awhile since we had such a good spokes person for the SEC. The conference is in good hands with young guys like Tebow coming into the league.

All the reasons he won't win make sense, except that the people who do the voting are saying different. As has been pointed out, many of the guys on the watch lists are actual voters, and have said if they had to vote today, he'd be their pick... overwhelmingly. Could change, of course, if he or the team stumbles; but he ain't gonna lose because he's a sophomore.

It could hurt him a little bit in the south, but that should be offset by considerable gains in and around San Francisco.

Matt Ryan should take the Heisman. Tebow's a beast, but Matt Ryan is so NFL ready, and such a good prospect its ridiculous. And if BC goes undefeated, he has to win it. Tebow will surely become a better QB, but right now I'd take Ryan, or probably Woodson to start my team. I know that's not exactly what Heisman is about, but Ryan is still winning too

Tebow will not win the Heisman this year. Bank on it.

When was the last time that the DAC awarded the Heisman to a Sophomore?

Correct for 5000.

Now on to our Daily Double.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not taking a jab at Tebow. I'm just saying that the DAC will give it to ANYONE over a deserving Freshman or Sophomore. :thumbsdow

Oh...I agree completely. Grossman in 2001 was a prime example...had nearly 4,000 yds passing...nearly 40 TDs...yet, they gave it to Crouch from Nebraska...his #'s were no where near Rex's....but Rex was a sophomore.:thumbsdow

I thought Grossman should have won that year despite the loss to UT. We had John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth and I believe Will Overstreet on that defensive line. It was a beastly line and Grossman got hit nearly every play. The guy still hung in the pocket and put up huge numbers that day. Not to mention, he didn't play defense and that is where the game was lost.
This absurb, media-driven criteria for the Heisman is laughable. I think that either Tebow or McFadden should win it, but instead of going to the best player in football, the award pretty much goes to the best offensive player on the highest rated team. It's not the MVP, so record shouldn't have a hell of a lot to do with it.

Agreed...and to be honest...the Heisman usually goes to the player that ESPN hypes the most. Manning got screwed out of it in '97 because Woodson had a couple of "plays of the day" and ESPN jumped on his jock.

ESPN is hyping Ryan at this point.

As Herbstreit stated, the comeback by BC against VT is the first real time that any of the Heisman candidates have had a chance to prove their merit in a crucial situation.

A few of them are. I've heard several who've said he almost destroyed his hopes; and if he'd actually lost the game, he'd be done. He looked awful for 3 quarters and 10 minutes, against his first legitimate defense.

Yeah, the general consensus has been that had they lost he would be done, BUT they said he completely salvaged his and his team's season by that miraculous comeback.

I sincerely believe if they voted today Ryan would get it.
