Doesn't really come as much of a surprise to me. I hope this was not about money because this was a fair deal. Every sport now a days is "what have you done for me lately" and considering they haven't gotten past the 1st round for the past 3 years, $5 million is more than enough. Even the best managers are getting paid WAY less than he would be ex. Francona from the Red Sox gets 1.1 million. $5 million plus $3 million in bonuses is plenty of cash and it would be a shame if he left cause of that and that has to be the only reason.
I hope they don't lose Posada and Rivera for this and I dont think they will because they will be offered a big contract. It's time for a new coach, someone who can handle young pitching. I have not idea who should be the next coach, it would make sense if it was Don Mattingly because Yankees do like to keep it in the system and there has been rumor that a pitching coach from the farm system will be the next pitching coach, the guy who developed Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy.

I'm glad that he turned them down. They've jerked the guy around quite a bit. He's got championships. He has money. He has respect. Why would he continue to allow them to treat him like he just finished his first season and didn't win many games?

Even as a Yankee fan, I'd agree with you there. I'm glad he rejected the offer cause the Boss has treated him like crap. Has his two sons gotten power of this organization earlier, I don't think this would have happened. Had Hank and Hal taken over 3 or 4 years ago, you'd see a completely different Yankee team right now. But doesn't matter Torre is gone now and they have to move on.
I am SO happy The boss is gone from daily duties in the organization.

Maybe so, but Hank is George, Jr. really. He'll likely be every bit as ornery and unfair. Thankfully, Hal has some say, but how much of a fire extinguisher he is is still up for debate. I'm glad Torre didn't let them think they owned him, and showed some self-respect.

Torre served them well. They can find someone else to harangue. He was not a magician. There will be bad times for everybody, even the untouchable Yankees. (well, they consider themselves "untouchable", don't they?)

Torre made the playoffs every year with the Yankees. Winning the ALDS I believe every year up to 2006.
I think he's going to ATL.

The Yankees made him an offer they knew he would refuse, IMO.

They said they thought it was fair but I don't think so. Go to the Braves Torre! Bobby's retiring soon!
HAH!! Torre did just what I said he would! And now here's to hoping he does the second half of what I predicted and comes to the Braves as assistant GM until bobby retires! :goodjob:

I don't see that happening. He's was the Yankees manager and I think he really liked that titled. I would be shocked if he actually goes somewhere to coach next year or whatever Bobby Cox retires. He's still a legend in NY and the fans still love him. But hey, anything can happen and we all know money can get people to work anywhere.
Of course he will be coaching somewhere... even Larry Bowa (his 3rd base coach in NY) was on ESPN last night and said that he knows Joe wants to coach somewhere, and wherever it is will be right where he wants to be.
And it won't be in NY.

Maybe the Mets, but I doubt it. Only reason I dont think he'd go to the Braves is cause he is going to look for a team that has veteran players and a chance to win quickly. Braves have some veteran players but a lot of others are young players so thats a reason I think.
The Dodgers might be a team he could look to next year. One this is for sure, he will be a hot commodity next winter.
