View Full Version : Will USC Finally Pay For Pay? Breakthrough In The Bush Case

It appears there's going to be trouble for USC, after all. Months ago, we discussed whether or not Carroll and USC would be exposed and penalized for paying the Bush family. At that time, I insisted that this case wasn't going to go away, and that the allegations would eventually come to light; but, that the NCAA was notoriously slow with their investigations. Well, now there's a break in the case, and it doesn't look good for the media darlings: Bush case break? - NCAA Football - Yahoo! I started a thread on this story when it first broke over a year ago. Is there anyone here who thinks it would have taken this long for any action to be taken had it been an SEC program in question?
The only reason it's even a story now is the guy who gave all these benefits to Reggie & his family isn't letting it just go away....

I'm sure that's true, since we're talking about USC. You'll notice, though, that it still took a long time to nail Oklahoma, too. But, I think we're seeing an absolute intolerance for this kind of thing these days; which is bad news for the most recent offenders, like F$U; who are normally accustomed to having these things ignored or marginalized and minimalized. As for the SEC, I think that since we have a long and storied history of this kind of thing, we can always expect to be examined with a microscope.

I wonder if they'll have to forfeit games that Bush played in, like Oklahoma did.

Pete "shady" Carroll and USC will swindle their way out of this one. Everyone knows that USC is one of the most dirtiest and shadiest programs in the country and use their hollywood backing to buy their way out of everything. Hell, Miles Brand probably has recieved more "donations" from USC boosters than you'd believe. Every other school that has a violation get reported on and so much media attention they might as well put it on billboards across the nation. The media and especially ESPN thinks So Cal's shit doesn't stink. :brick:

I think this one's too public to sweep under the rug, now. That's what they were trying to do with this guy... pay him to sign a confidentiality agreement (keep his mouth shut). It's going to be too high-profile to be ignored; and there will be no shortage of harsh words and criticism coming from other programs (primarily Oklahoma, whose charges pale in comparison) at any hint of favoritism. I think they're just about cooked; but, of course, the media still has the choice of whether or not to report on it. Thankfully, not all media outlets reside in L.A..

Go to ESPN's college football main page and see how long it takes you to find the link to this story..."the world leader" in sports news is approaching this potentially HUGE story with HUGE implications by merely quoting what other outlets (mainly Yahoo! Sports & the AP) have reported and copy & pasted it.

I don't care if the media outlets are in L.A. or up in Bristol or anywhere....this story will be buried until such time that it cannot be made to go away. I think it's far from a slam dunk that southern california will receive punishment as a program as a result of this.

They're based in L.A., aren't they, and a devout USC worshipper? Do a Google News search, and no fewer than 300 articles will pop up, including ones in the L.A. Times.

Who's based in L.A.? ESPN is in Bristol, Connecticut....I have no clue about Yahoo! though. Google brings up blogs on top of major media outlets so there's no surprise there are a bunch of results there...this thread might just pop up!

Even 1aa schools funnel money and perks to players. Look at Fulmer at UT.... they actually have to kill someone before they get punished. Same with ND. It's all B.S. everyone needs to just shut up and stop reporting each other. The dirty little secret: No program is clean, even if they want to be.

I don't know anything about where ESPN's physical headquarters are, but I'm pretty sure their studios are in the same place as most, L.A.. Additionally, a regular Google search will bring up the results you're talking about, but a GOOGLE NEWS search will only return legitimate news stories from reputable outlets (usually within the AP or Reuters) within the last month, devoid of the blog stories and forum entries. And, when I did it, they returned some 352 stories from papers across the nation.
EDIT: Oh, and I agree there's media bias... that wasn't my argument. There most certainly is... my point was that, after laying in relative dormancy for the past few months, this blockbuster has now gotten way too much attention to be covered up or overlooked. In fact, Carroll's only comment on the new story and investigation was, "I don't know anything about what's going on with it. I haven't heard about it in months.".

If it was Bama they would have been sanctioned already and been given lectures on how lucky they were for not getting the death penalty. The NCAA has a sick sense of humor, they had better do their job regarding this matter, media darlings or not.

Yes your right, no program is clean. But Troy Smith's free $500 dollars, Maurice Clarett's show up and get paid job, or Oklahoma's Rhett Bomar free cars, pale in comparison to the supposed $280,000 that Bush and his family got. It is said that So Cal has some of the weathliest boosters in the country especially because they reside in Hollywood. Have you ever noticed that some of these kids that go there show no interest in USC, and then all of a sudden, bam! I think I'll go to USC. You can just tell that Pete Carroll is a shady mofo, come on the guy doesn't even show up to coach practice but has his assistants do it for him. He is nothing but a figure head and a over hyped car salesman IMHO. If the shit does hit the fan in SC, watch Carroll rocket to the NFL asap!

hmmmm..... let's see frosty winters in Columbus or Beaches in So. Cal.
I don't buy your argument. These are kids. My nephew is the age of the recruits. He has a new girl each week. Kids are easily swayed. Doesn't hurt Hollywood is in your backyard and you know Paris Hilton will blow you if you go to USC.
Also, it shouldn't matter how much you gave. UK boosters gave Albert Means under 20,000. Alabama boosters gave over 100k. We both got the same punishment.
Lastly, who cares what the H.C. is doing. You think JoPa is running drills? How about Bowden? The assistants could function without the HC. The HC is a sudo-GM.

I don't know whose head coach you're referring to, but that's definitely not the case at UF. Meyer runs all the special teams, designs all the offensive plays to be called by the OC during games, and makes the offensive game plan. All those things have to be run over and over to perfection in practice before they will get called during actual games. Yes, I think Paterno and Bowden are out there running practice... in fact, in Bowden's case, I've seen it. That Carroll doesn't is a revelation to me; and one I consider extremely irresponsible and conceited. If that's really true, which I find hard to believe, then he and USC are getting exactly what they asked for by the head coach not being as involved as a head coach should be. A good head coach will watch countless hours of game film to derive a game plan, and translate what he's seen to the practice field in preparation for the upcoming game. Clearly, Carroll didn't do any of that in preparation for Stanford... probably for the reasons I said... he's conceited, and didn't think he needed anything other than the superior athletes to beat them. You can bet your last dollar that Harbaugh didn't sleep all week before the game, trying to come up with a way to beat the juggernaut. And, that's just what they did.

Man, thats pretty much a sin to the CFB world to compare JoePa to Pete Carroll. JoePa has been coaching Penn State for 42 years and he is almost senile at age 81. Of course his assistants are going to do most of the work. Carroll on the other hand is capable of doing his own work. Tressel does everything for tOSU. What gives? I guess we will never get the point across to you that the Pac 10 isn't that great and Carroll is one shady cheating bastard. :brick:

Discipline? JoePa makes the entire Nittany Lion football team clean the entire 107,000 seat Beaver Stadium every sunday after a home game because of a few players got into some off season altercations. Thats being a great disciplinarian. Do you think Carroll would do that? Hell no. He doesn't care about USC, its tradition, or anything else. He is a shady bastard that cares only about himself. Period!

You want an example. USC had to great offensive coordinators in Norm Chow and Lane Kiffin. They are now gone to the NFL and Petey is having trouble running his offense. Wouldn't a HC that has been there for a few years now know the ends and outs of the USC offense without having to rely on a OC? Another example, Tressel didn't have trouble having a great defense once Mark D'Antonio left for Cincinnati whom is now HC at Michigan St. I saw an article one time on SI about how Carroll is seldomly at practices and when he is there he tries to premote his feel good atmosphere by watching practice in a lawn chair under a sun umbrella drinking Mt. Dew. Oh yeah, that sets a good example. I wish I could find this story. I'll look for it.

Between this and Oklahoma's already admitted troubles, I really wish there was a way Auburn could at least in the books be put down as the 2004 NC. Come on, they retroactively gave Kentucky Football the 1950 NC 5 years ago or so.
Just don't leave 2004 as being "vacant". That would be bitter.
