Yes, I'm talking about the Auburn Tigers, but I'm not just talking about their win over Florida.
It started Friday night. Auburn's first tough loss was to a tough USF team. After the game when I said USF should be ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation, more then one of the posters here called me an idiot (you know who you are). Friday night, they got their second big win over a ranked opponent, knocking off #5 WVU. They will be ranked among the top 15 upon the release of the polls. Keep in mind this is a team Auburn lost to in overtime after a fourth quarter comeback and extra time heroics by the Bulls.
Auburn's second loss was to a Mississippi State team. This one is a little different than the one above, as Miss State is not and will not be a top 25 team this year. However, they did prove against South Carolina what they can do, they did prove how tough they are, they did prove they will be no pushover for any team this year. This was also a loss for Auburn that came on a 4th quarter comeback by the Dawgs.
Both of these losses also came among a boatload of Auburn injuries. Tray Blackmon, our best linebacker, out. Brad Lester (suspension), our best RB, out. Our fastest player, out. Several other defensive players missed time. Our offensive line was reshuffled before the NMSU game and two guys previously starting (and struggling) are now riding the pine. Since the shuffle, Auburn's offense has had a new light, scoring 55 against NMSU and 23 against Florida.
Now for Auburn's first win. The close game against Kansas State was the first point when many started to doubt Auburn. Yesterday, Kansas State not only played #7 Texas close, but beat them, 41-21 in an all out ass whooping.
And finally, the biggest, and most direct peice of evendence that points to a rise in Auburn's stock. Their win over the Gators. Since his arrival, Urban Meyer had never lost a game in the Swamp. His Gators were undefeated this year, with SuperTebow as quarterback. They were playing at home, ranked #4 in the nation. Lowly Auburn marched into the Swamp and beat the Gators, the 3 point differential not truly showing the nature of the game. Auburn dominated three quarters of football and before Groves was hurt, UF only had scored only 3 points on offense.
Don't take this as a bash post. The Gators are, and still should be (in my mind) among the top 5 teams in the nation. Just not their night.
WAR DAMN EAGLE
