View Full Version : Big Time Games Coming Up

In my opinion, two of the biggest games left on our schedule are coming up in the next two weeks. We've got UAB and then Tennessee, both in Starkville. UAB being our last non-conference game that we SHOULD win. It's going to be critical for us to pick up this 4th win if we want a shot at getting SIX this season. For us to grab those six wins, we'll need those four wins, probably an Egg Bowl win, and at least one more SEC upset. Seems like Tennessee might be one of our best chances to get that win.
Even after the loss to USC, our team should be feeling pretty good. If we get a win against UAB, we ought to be rabid for a victory over Tennessee, pulling us ever close to that golden six wins. Any thoughts on the upcoming weeks? When will Henig be back? Do you think we can get these two wins?
(Yes, I'm trying to boost some MSU discussion in here. We are lagging in last place for posts!)

I think most of Us Dogs just post everything on the football board , but I'll respond.
Yes , these next 2 are critical if We have any bowl hopes at all.
Do I think We can get these 2 wins?
UAB should be a win for sure. If We lose that one the whole coaching staff should resign.
UT...........I would say no , but anything can happen. It would take Our team playing at their highest level and probably a few mistakes (turnovers) form UT for Us to win.
Last I heard on Henig is he will miss at least 2 more games.

I'm with you Nick, I really think these next two weeks determine if we'll go to a bowl or not. We should beat UAB, and notice I said should, and I really think we have a great chance at Tennessee. I've seen several of their games thus far and I have not been impressed at all. Their offensive line if very pourous, and I think if we can get pressure on Ainge early he'll make a few mistakes. The difference in that game I still feel will be whether or not we can have some type of passing game. Carroll definitely needs to have a big game against UAB and boost some of his confidence if we're going to have a shot at Tennessee. Hopefully we can do it, I wouldn't place any bets on it though, the season is long and as injuries have proven in the past anything can happen. Anyway, Go Dawgs beat the Blazers!!!

I think we have a good chance to beat our next two home opponents. The only problem tennessee is going to give us is the passing game. If we can get to ainge and make him make some mistakes and run the ball well, we should pull out a W against UT. The way the mountaineers have looked in their last two games gives me hope against them. If we can slow down their running attack like USF did, we can beat them. Kentucky is going to be really tuff game for us due to our vulnerability against the pass. Alabama, Arkansas, and UM are also going to be tuff games simply due to the nature of the rivalries, but we have good opportunities in all of those games if we can come up with a bit more pass deffense and some passing offense.

im not trying to be negative nick, but our top 2 QB's are down and yes they are our top 2, so maybe with a win against SC the team would be feeling good but i dont think they are because they gave up at the end of the game.....every single team we play now is going to put 8 and 9 players in the box so it is goin to be hard to beat any team without a passing attack....i do agree if we lose next week that should be it for the coaches third string QB or not....i want to say i like our chances against tenn but the way our passing defense played against SC, im worried that tenn might expose them...but i hope for the best and once again, im not trying to be negative, but it would be a miracle for us to win 6 games with woody calling the plays with a young inexperienced QB....

I agree that our chances are looking worse now that we are down to one quarterback. Carroll is really going to have to shine the next two weeks for us to pull this season off. I felt much better before the Riddell injury. I'm not sure if Carroll can bring the passing game we need to beat Tennessee. I think he can run the offense. He won't make too many mistakes and he's quick on his feet. But I don't know that he can execute the passing game yet. He's only a true freshman, with no real backup.
Woody should have been fired years ago. Notice he's not just the OC, but also the quarterbacks coach? The one position we have the MOST trouble with. Thanks Woody.
I suppose we'll have to see how the UAB game goes. Hopefully Carroll can get a pass attack together. We don't need to dominate TN with passing, we just need enough to take the pressure off the running game. Otherwise Dixon and Ducre won't be able to get any yards.

UAB's has no depth and they are beat up. MSU should take this one easily.
Good luck against Tennessee ;)

This is a good game to get Carroll going. Ms State will go bowling because they have a shot to win each game left on the schedule. Yes they could beat that virginia team too. Win this game and you are 4-2 going into a tenn game which just got beat by ga. 5-2. Then look at your schedule again. Do you really see any games that you would say you just ain't gonna win? I don't. Winning games builds confidence.

henig can just go ahead and reserve himself a padded seat on the bench if it were up to me.....broken hand or not....if you cant throw the ball, dont play....what does croom see in henig that makes him a starter!?... 24 int's to 10 td's in his career in only 9 starts!...

Agreed. We've got to get a good QB in there. I think Conner could have been good, if Croom hadn't kept jerking him around between positions (and a couple of injuries).
Henig is headed for the bench against TN. Carroll is starting. He had decent stats for a MSU QB against UAB. I liked his comments after the game. If he can manage the offense, not make stupid mistakes and cause turnovers, and throw a decent pass every once in a while, he might just be good enough to get us through the season. The only thing Henig has over Carroll is experience. I guess we'll see how Carroll does in his first real test against TN.
That's one down. 4-2. We've just got to get 2 wins out of the next 6 games. No more "guaranteed" wins. But it's certainly possible to get the wins. I don't know if it will be against TN or not. They look a lot better now than they did a couple of weeks ago.

I think Croom has found his QB with Carroll. He makes smart decisions and doesn't try to force the ball and he also has the ability to tuck it and run. He's still going to make some freshman mistakes, but he really looked good in the second half against UAB. He's not a QB that will light up folks for 300 or 400 passing yards but we don't need him to do that. With our running game and Defense we just need a QB who keeps us in it and doesn't turn the ball over a lot. In my opinion I think Carroll does an excellent job of those things. The next few weeks are critical for us. I think our schedule is brutal from here on out, and there are no guaranteed wins but I don't think we'll outmatched as bad as we have been in the past. There is a possibility of a win in all of our remaining games, maybe we can sneak a few of them out and make a bowl, Hopefully so. Go Dawgs!!!

i am interested to see which tenn team shows up to play...but it will be carroll's first real test....we need a QB that can try and keep defenses honest...like bully said, we dont need him to throw for 400 yards.....just an interesting stat.....carroll has played in all six games this year (started 2 of them)...0 ints....henig has played in 4 games (started 2 of them)...9 ints.....carroll doesnt have a TD yet but henig only has 1....not seeing a huge upside to henig but i hope carroll plays good this week......go dawgs!!
