View Full Version : Kentucky Football; A Great Example of Patience Paying Off

In today's world of win today or be gone tommorow I find it very refreshing to see a team like UK being paid off for their patience. It was only a few short years ago that Brooks' sat on one of the hottest seats in the country. Plenty of people expected him to be gone by this point, UK fans included. However, just the opposite has happened. He is taking the Wildcats to places they havent been in a long time. UK won their first bowl game in forever last year, beat a top 10 opponent for the first time in forever last week, is ranked in the top 25 and shows no signs of falling out. Like I said, in a world where we see so many coaches shown the axe(some fairly and some not so fairly) its refreshing to be reminded that there are people being rewarded for their patience:thumpsup:

Yes, Brooks has done good so far, but the big test will be next year, when there is no Woodson, Burton, Little, or Tamme.

But, good job UK. I'm definatly scared.

We play at UK this year too. And, it's our last game of the season...

They gave up 500 yards of Offense to Arky. The play of the game was the Arky fumble picked up and ran in for a TD right before Half. I saw the starting lineups on tv last night. It looked like every player on UKs Offense was a Senior. They'll get to a decent Bowl this year.

And Alabama gave up 450 yards offense to Arkansas...whats your point?

I've said it once and I'll say it again... I am ready for a new HC who will take the steps to get us to a point where we can actually have balance and score more than 13 offensive points with over 400 yards of offense.

I don't care what some people on here say, we're missing Mitch Mustain and Nutt should have gone after Kodi Burns harder. We're dead in the water as a program and a fanbase. Time for change.

First of all...UK is still a basketball school. We've always been a football school as well. We have been ranked in the Top 30 in attendance every year since we expanded Commonwealth Stadium. Ya'll fail to see that we get to enjoy SEC football AND basketball....while most of you just show up for football. I'm pretty sure it is ya'll who are missing out....not us. We're there on Saturday's in the fall at Commonwealth, through the good (this season) and the bad (99.9% of the time :D )
Of course patience is going to pay off here....we can't really be picky. We knew good things were coming this season after last, and thus far, they are. We're freaking ecstatic. How many days to Midnight Madness? :D

I saw the UF comment above.....we have USC, UF, and LSU three weeks in a row. We have USC only on the road...in what should be some great Thursday night football on ESPN. I know everyone will be tuned into that one.

They could slap a dome over Commonwealth and not taking sightlines, etc. into account, they'd fill it up for Basketball as well. There's no rule that says you can't be a great Basketball and Football School, right Florida? There's also no rule that says you can't be a great runner-up Basketball and Football School, right KillerNut?

thanks for the props. I'd be lying if I said that I have always supported brooks. after getting shellacked in the opener by Louisville last year, I was ready to let him go (as were many other UK fans). We are all looking foolish so far this year (and the end of last year), and I have never been so happy to admit that I was wrong. We have a long way to go if we want to get to the level where we are consistently contending in the SEC, but we are enjoying the ride so far this year.

Sanders has helped immensely to shape Woodson into the QB he is today, no doubt, and he deserves that credit. But make no mistake, the offense is Joker Phillips', and no one elses. There are some folks (not saying you're one of them Daddy) that think Sanders is our O-coordinator. That's just not the case, and I wanted to make that clear.
And, no, you can't have him back!!!:biggrin:

Very good post cocky4ever. Well said. But you know who IM happy for? It's the long time Kentucky FOOTBALL fans. the ones that followed this guys for several years with nothing to cheer about. But because of their love for Football, they stuck with it. those are the people you have to be happy for.
Brooks has not done this alone. he has placed a very good staff around him. I couldn't help but laugh yeterday while he was on the sidelines and the camera zoomed in on his duning a tense moment, and reading his lips, I bet his players have learn a host of new words in the english cussing language. He is a fire and brimstone kinda old school type coach. These guys are a dieing breed. There never said die attitude is something we all can take from this team. I wish them and the long time Kentucky football fans the best the rest of the season.

You can definitely tell Brooks is old school and doesn't take any crap from his players... But McFadden said that Kentucky was one of the most physical teams he's ever played against so it appears to rub off.

You didn't have to be a lip-reader to see he was slinging quite a string of 4-letter words at Smith when he caused that safety, Dixon when he fumbled and Jefferies when he blew a blocking assignment that led to a fumble and touchdown.

How can anyone not be happy for the die-hard UK football fans? I mean, UK hadn't beaten a top 10 teams since 1977 before this year!!!

Sannyasin, the only thing we heard other than Kentucky had a very explosive offense lead by Woodson's arm, was they had no defense. That's not what I seen last night. What I seen was a Defense that played hard and played soild. Dmac took some hard shots last night. I was blown away from their play on D. ANother thing I notice, and wasn't expecting was the run game The Cats showed. If that one two punch can stay in tact, and you cut down just a bit on mistakes you make against Arkansas, you guys can make a huge statement.
I telling all right now. I am a Kentucky fan. I still can't stand yall obsene Basketball morons Sannyasin, But I can over look them to be able to pull for the Cats the reat of the year.
Keep your head on straight, accept the success you will recieve this season, and never fall into the darkside like other members of the conference. You guys have to stay focus on the game that's next. Don't look past Florida Atlantic or it will bite you. Then after that realize that is the start of one hellva a schedlue. At South Carolina I have no doubt you can leave with a win. Trouble with this game though, is watch out for the flying bottles the drunk locals throw. Bright lights don't come to Hooterville that ogten, and the slack jawed morons don't know how to act, sorta like the Bama fans acted last night after losing to Georgia,,,,,anyway. Get the win there and you then look and at sobbering new, LSU Florida and Mississippi State, the good news with this, they are all at your place. ANd out of those three, I really think you have a great chance to win two of them. And that's taking another huge step. like the one you made last night with a road win in the SEC.
Rverything I said about applys to if you have the fire you did last night in Fayetteville. Play like that, and avoid major injuries and punch a ticket to Atlanta.

God I love college football, wish I lived in a place where that had it.

You are right about our defense. We give up a ton of yards but we aren't at all a bad SCORING defense, they tighten up in the red zone (a lot of the scoring against us this year has been special teams or the other team's defense). More importantly, they play with pride and go out there looking to lay the wood on people. Ask any team that has played us in the past 10 games if we are one of the worst defenses in the country. The other team spends a lot of time in the training room after playing this team. That hard hitting has also lead to a penchant for creating turnovers... Our turnover margin has been great.

------------------
Our schedule is brutal, like most of the SEC.

I'd love to beat USC, just because Spurrier has been and continues to be such a prick, bully toward UK since he came in the league. He is CONSTANTLY taking potshots against UK for absolutely no apparent reason.

I'd also love to beat UT this year, we've lost 22 straight years to them including a TON of close calls like last year. I want to beat Florida too but they just have so much talent... We beat Georgia last year but they are improved; as is Vandy and MSU.

Best case, 10-2 and MAYBE a New Year bowl. You don't understand how great that would be for our long suffering fans. Realistically, I think 8-4 and ending some of these long standing streaks we've had around our neck for 20 years.

As a fan, that's something I miss. In the days of old, Arkansas had that same respect from other teams. Asking anyone who played us, the comments were all the same, you can tell by the bruises, we just played the Razorbacks. That seems not to be the case in 07.

Well, our RBs would differ. You knocked our our first string with a thigh bruise, our second string with a shoulder injury and our third string with a sprained ankle.
Derrick Locke (our 4th string RB) would beg to differ too about your D hitting people. The guy was a freaking magnet for hard hits, it was like literally everytime he got the ball he just got LEVELED. But, he didn't fumble and got some crucial 4th quarter yards.

Not gonna argue that.

However, we all know that everybody loves a winner. String a few losses together and those crowds might thin out a bit.

BTW, thank you so much for beating Clemson last year in that bowl game. The USC fans particularly enjoyed that one and were cheering hard for you guys.

UK hasn't been a true football winner since 1977, maybe 1984 if you're being generous... Yet every year there's 65,000 out there 2-9 season or not.

UK has arguably the most resilient fanbase in the SEC.

That's true. USC has seen their share of miserable years, including a 1-10 team under Granny in the past tens years (I think).

First, I haven't visited this site since 2005. WOW, forgot all about it. Glad to see they still kept my registration.. LOL
Next, I would like to thank all the fans here that have thrown support UK's way. (especially the Hog fans) I love the SEC, and always want one of our schools to win the NC. It won't be UK, but we always have some teams up to task. So where are ya FL and LSU?
I would like to offer some color to go with those defensive stats folks use when judging UK. These aren't excuses, they are just some things to factor in... UK just replaced the defensive coordinator. I gave them the first two games to get the kinks out, and they needed it. Then came a game against one of the best offensive attacks out there. Most think that UL is just a passing team, but at that point of the season, they had the top yardage rusher. Then, UK faced the best rushing combo on any team, arguably college or pro.
Something else to consider are the adjustments UK is making at the half, and the fact that UK is not wearing down like in years past. The second half of the Ark is a prime example.
I would never say this D is a world beater, but they aren't as bad as the stats let on and they are getting better and better every week.

I'm just happy to see some other UK fans on here. I know there's a billion of us on the UK boards because most of the time we just like to talk basketball amongst ourselves. But this season is bringing all those folks into the SEC forums...and that's awesome. I'm no longer the frequent UK poster. I think most folks think we're like Vandy or something....where there aren't a ton of fans on the internet...which is just flat out wrong. I dare say other than Alabama, Kentucky has the most SEC fans on the internet. We just seem to stick to spots like the Cats Pause and Kentucky Ink and the rest...ya'll know 'em. So hell yea. GO BIG BLUE!!!!
