We moved the ball well on offense with the help of that personal foul penalty. With it raining, its going to be tough to throw and we can't run on this D.

On the defense, we shouldnt be looking to strip the ball in the rain because there is a fast guy running the ball. We need to tackle and not go for the strip. We're missing Jasper in there right now:-(

gatorunvrsty
09-22-2007, 03:26 PM
Wow, that was a horrible kick-interference call. The returner waited way too long to call for the fair catch... you can't expect a guy who's been running full-speed all the way down the field to stop on a dime when the returner is fair game for the hit right up until that time.

Ralliartist
09-22-2007, 03:28 PM
yea, that was a horrible call. But I'm not gonna play the blame game. We need a huge stop here. Oh, and that was definitely a fumble too.

man i called that fake FG. as soon as they called that 3rd down play, i was like spurrier they're gonna fake ittt. awesome play by the special team of lsu though. we can't move the ball at all. Much like i predicted, we're done by half time.

Cheap shot. Spurrier needs to show that to the team at half time.

Dr. Pepper

I really thought Blake had fire in his eye late in the first quarter, but there was absolutely no offense for the most part. I expect to see Smelley if Blake can't get them going early in the third.

Dr. Pepper
09-22-2007, 04:14 PM
This game has a long way to go. But losing Brinkley is a killer. Every bounce went LSU's way in the first half. Maybe we will get a couple of bounces in the second.

True Grit
09-22-2007, 04:14 PM
I hope Smelley comes in. Every team that has played LSU this year has put in their backup.

True Grit
09-22-2007, 04:15 PM
WR Jared Mitchell needs to come out for LSU. Too many drops. Put in Lafell, Byrd, and Tolliver, get the passing game going.

Dr. Pepper
09-22-2007, 04:18 PM
Why do you want to get the passing game going? You are running at will. Go ahead, throw it if you want, maybe we will start getting some of the tips.

True Grit
09-22-2007, 04:20 PM
The passing game would be doing well if Mitchell hadnt had those three drops.

LSU is kinda shooting themselves in the foot. If it werent for drops and penalties it would be the score would probably 35-3.

It'll be all run attack in the second half with passing only to keep Cocks defense honest. About the way we thought the game would go with rain. Should be a great second half of action. Loved the trick play. I knew it was coming as well after that uneventful 3rd down play.

scfan5338
09-22-2007, 04:50 PM
This could get ugly.

It got ugly when they scored the second TD. I dont know why Spurrier went for it on that one, and even when he did we freaking ran it right at Dorsey. Pitch it or something. Our offense is the worst it has been under spurrier and this is reminding me of the Holtz days...conservative play calling the entire game or in this case, the entire season. I thought Mitchell would give us the best chance to win, but maybe not. Forget all them bring out Garcia.

I was probably the ONLY USC fan on this board that said that this game would be over by halftime. I knew that LSU was going to bring most of the other fans back to life because everyone was on another planet. They claimed Spurrier was holding back the playbook because he didn't wanna "give any film." Well he did that and we lost pretty good I'd say. He is not the coach at Florida obviously, but he is almost the coach he was with the Redskins. He is so conservative it's not even funny.

You are 0-1 in the SEC and at the bottom of the SEC East. You're not as good as you claimed to be at the beginning of the season. You're all so mighty Ainge is average and that defense is horrible.

Our defense gives up 300 yards rushing a game and still manages to win most of the games except for this one.

Well, he needs to play in passing situations but I doubt he's as good of a blocker as A. Boyd right now. But he will definitely be a stud soon. We can probably move Cook to WR and play Saunders though. That might help the depth at WR.

It's not that the Gamecocks are bad, but that LSU is just too good. This is the closest game LSU has been in all season. Before this game, the most amount of points given up by LSU was 7, and the least points LSU had scored was 44.

I had us losing by a TD, so to lose 28-16 is still not as close as I thought it'd be, but not as bad as most thought (we covered the spread, and won me a ton of worthless v-money, at least). LSU clearly has the better D and O-lines. Losing Jasper Brinkley early in the game was critical for us, after already losing Pepper last week. If Jap was able to play the whole game, we wouldn't have won, but we would've done better against the run, IMO.

I'm starting to become concerned about USC's WR's. Beyond McKinley, no one is really stepping up, and we will need them during the course of the season. Our RB's were our top 2 receivers for the game, and usually have been among the reception leaders this young season. That cannot continue.

Looks like we have a QB controversy on our hands. This thing about Mitchell's confidence confuses me: he's a 5th-year senior, and shouldn't be having this problem. Smelley on the other hand threw for 170+ yards and a TD in one half of football, and despite being erratic at times, he played much better than Mitchell, at a time in the game when LSU knew we had to start throwing.

Emmanual Cook dropped a sure TD INT in wide open territory. I guess our DB's simply do not know how to catch a ball. That touchdown would have made the game very interesting.

IMO, as far as rooting for the Gamecocks, I was playing with the house's money in this game: a game that I figured us to lose this year, but one that I wouldn't throw back if we won.

Good luck to LSU the rest of the season...I doubt we will be playing you again this season. We'll see you next season in Williams-Brice!

Good game, LSU. We all knew you were the better team, but my hopes for the upset weren't completely unrealistic. I liked the way the CBS announcers were pondering a rematch in Atlanta. I'm up for it if you guys are.

Also I just wanted to say how impressed I was with the conduct of LSU on the field. They were exuberant and animated, but I didn't notice a whole lot of in-your-face trash talk, and I saw a lot more guys helping up our Gamecocks after plays than one typically sees. Other than that one dirty hit by Murphy(I think) on the kickoff return I had no problems with the way that game was played...and obviously that type of thing unfortunately happens from time to time on every team.

Great game Tigers. Good luck the rest of the way, and I hope we can do it again in a couple months.

Great game LSU, and congrats. There were many positives that came out of this game. Spurrier has already announced Smelley as the starter next week. He looked very poised in the pocket yesterday. I believe Spurrier is now officially sick of Mitchell. Saunders look really good catching the ball from the TE spot. He now just has to learn where the first down marker is and stretch out. The LSU defense is hell. No other way to put it. 17 net yards rushing for Carolina. I cannot even rmember the last time Carolina could not run the ball.

This Carolina team showed their conditioning yesterday, and their refusal to quit. That could carry them a long way this season. I still say no one goes undefeated this year in the SEC, and it was a good time against a great team to lose. This will show this team their is no one left on their schedule they cannot play. Carolina fans, pick your heads up, and realize how exciting the rest of the season can be.

Once again LSU, congrats on the win. You have one helluva team, and the fake field goal was priceless. Even drew a smile from the HBC.

Yeah, I dont think the players for USC were able to exploit the cracks in the LSU defense that Spurrier found. He knew that we would win the TE and RB catch plays everytime but Mitchell couldn't get the ball to them.

I agree with Beeds, when Davis got in there we were able to move the ball a little bit better. Also, I dont understand why we ran it up the middle every single time.

Dint talk it out on someone else just cause your getting slaughtered on the field. You need to go ahead and get over this loss yourself. I dont know about any other dawg fans but im over the SC loss. In fact I really dont care........

Intercepted. You guys aren't nearly as good as you claim to be, Cocks.

Notice something in common about the two trash talkers? Looking at LSU's schedule, there are two interesting teams missing. I will thoroughly enjoy myself if UGA or UT actually wins the east. Then, they can go to Atlanta, and get B*$%Hslapped for 60 min, and show these guys that we don't suck just because we're getting beaten by LSU. If anything, LSU fans should take those comments as an insult.

As for the comments about LSU not trying and all but letting us score at the end, I highly doubt that. I think a defense that had giving up 7 pts. in three games would have a little more pride than that. Besides, no matter what you say, college football is all about style points. Even though I do believe SC was overrated, it would have been in LSU's best interests to run up the score on #12.

GamecockDieHard
09-23-2007, 11:18 AM
We're a well-conditioned team and need to be due to our lack of depth. LSU has "scrubs" that would be starting for most teams and rarely need to play the first team for all 4 quarters. I don't think LSU wasn't trying, I think they were tired.

Agreed . And UGA fans think they let up ...yeah ok that was evident with the play calling of the OC. They tried to throw a fli-flicker in the 4th quarter because they wanted to run the score up, but that pass got intercepted. LSU coaches realized SC wasn't giving up and that is when they decided to stick to the run. Just because LSU didn't score 40 points ...they gave up..yeah ok and if they did that is just sad.

As far as the Cory Boyd vs. Mike Davis argument, Spurrier agreed that Davis might need more carries in the aftergame presser. He basically said they both run hard but Davis seems to be "shiftier" and falls forward rather than backwards. I tend to agree. Giving the ball to Davis more wouldn't have mattered vs. LSU but it might later in the season. The bottom line is if we take care of business in the games vs. the SEC East we won't have to worry about losing to LSU. I know that winning out in the SEC East is a tall order that probably won't happen, but if you want to be "the" team, you have to step it up and win the games where you control your own destiny. If we want to truly take it to the next level we need to lose no more than one more SEC game. I don't really see it happening this year, but I think we're still closer than we have been in a long while.

That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. They have the number one defense, kept their starters in, and with the kind of stats they have compiled, you don't 'give' anybody anything. Just like Spurrier said in his post game, LSU has a great defense and they love their stats.

If they 'gave up', then they can forget winning the SEC. You don't 'give' up in a 12 point game against Spurrier. People should think before they speak.

I think winning the SEC East will be really tough and I dont think we'll be able to win it unless we get a stable QB who can create balance for the offense and the OL learns how to block. We have one of the best recruting classes in the country for OL two years ago and hardly any of them are stepping up. I dont know what it is about USC but we bring in great players every year but most of them never live up to their expectations. That goes on the coaches and the players. If we want to win the east we have to be able to stop the run and throw the ball, two things we suck at right now.

Chris Smelley is a 4.0 kid who is smart and well spoken. He was also EXTREMELY poised in the LSU game Saturday. He will light a spark under this offense. Spurrier is finally fed up with the BS that is Blake Mitchell.

davis rushed 4 times for 10 yards...he wasn't that much better than boyd. besides they had to throw the ball in the second half and smelley showed he could do that more effectively than mitchell.

That stat is misleading. One of his carries was for a one yard touchdown. He wasn't touched by LSU's defense and would have scored from 10 yds out.

I though he looked very shaky in the LSU game. Several throws that should have been intercepted but weren't, bad form - nose of the ball up, throwing of the back foot. Plus the actual interception.

Chris Smelley played better than Blake Mitchell in the game and it seems like Mitchell's confidence is at an all time low. Mitchell doesn't trust himself or the receivers (which he probably shouldnt) so as of right not, I'd say Smelley gives us the best chance to win against MSU.

Thank you. Chris takes his drops, and releases the ball. He doesn't stand there with his thumb up his tail till he gets hit. He loves the opportunity, and actually cares about getting better. I don't know if you saw Mitchell's comments after the game, but it made me sick. The kid does not care.

One thing you might want to take into consideration with Smelley is that LSU prepared thier game plan for Mitchell. Every QB that has started against LSU hasn't finished, and all of the back ups have seemed to be the better options in the games.

Carolina runs the same plays and plan, regardless who is under center. I just noticed Smelley is number 10 in the SEC in total offense in 2 games, while Mitchell is number 17 with 3 games to his credit. Hmmmmm. Makes ya wonder doesn't it?
