View Full Version : Tebow is a stud, but...

Tebow is a stud, no doubt. However, he's going to get beat up over the course of the season running the ball the way he does and with such frequency. His performace could be affected toward the latter part of the season if Meyer continues to use Tebow this way. (This is not a criticism of Tebow. It's just my observation as an outsider looking in.)
Thoughts?

It's hard to read defenses when you have a concussion. I wouldn't hang my best QB out there like that, but he is the NC winning coach, so what do I know?

He's definitely off today. There are wide open receivers running around all over the field, but he's got tunnel vision; and is telegraphing where he's going every time. He hasn't looked off anyone and gone somewhere else.

He had great numbers, but missed a lot of open guys for big plays. I mean missed, as in, didn't see them running around flailing their arms, not missed them like didn't hit them with the pass. He still ended up with over 400 yards of total offense, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with him having to rush 140/game, week in and week out. He just seemed off, as far as his vision was concerned... very little footwork and searching for alternate receivers. They'll address it in the film-room I'm sure. I mean, UT has a much better stable of defenders than UM, and we blew them out.

Back to topic, I really like Tebow; I really wish Shula could have closed the deal with him. We didn't, of course, but no hard feelings on my part. He went with his heart, something most of us would have done. So I like the kid and really don't want to see him get hurt. He is going to get beaten up pretty good, but hopefully he won't see any serious injury. When we were using Tyler Watts in the Flexbone offense, he absorbed a LOT of damage (and he only ran it for two years.) If Tebow is at UF for four years and keeps playing "balls-out" like he has been, I'm honestly afraid that an injury will eventually happen. I hope not, but it will be modern-day miracle if he doesn't pick up an injury of some sort.

Tebow ran the ball an uncharacteristically 27 times for 170 yds....Meyer said in his post-game interview that it was Tebow's idea. Said that Tebow "got in his grill" and told him "just let me run it...I'll keep gettin' first downs and we'll win the game"...so Meyer did. Meyer did say that will never happen again...said that Moore had a little hip "ding" so he went with his big QB.
BTW, I didn't see Tebow take any good shots...but either way...he was bouncin' around after the game...and in the post-game interview...he was all smiles...one of the reporters basically said the same thing..."Are you worried about getting hurt with all this contact".....Tebow said with a huge smile on his face, "Nah...I love contact...I couldn't imagine playing a football game without getting hit...Coach "M" keeps us in the weight room training so we won't get hurt." I'm not worried about Tim Tebow...he's bigger than most team's LBs.

I'm trying to figure out why Meyer refuses to hand the ball to Chris Rainey? I mean the guy runs a 10.37 100m dash, and has beaten both Deonte Thompson(4.28), and Noel Devine(5 carries 136 yds) in races. Not only that but that kid is as quick as a cat, and has balance to match the best of em. Based on his earlier practices, Meyer said he would play him, but had issues with his size. Ironic considering he plays Brandon James.

Fumblitis, and some bad decision-making, when he has appeared, have cost him PT. He goofed up today on kick coverage, and Meyer ended up with a mouth full of his butt afterwards.:brick:

Meyer is real big on "trust"...remember, Rainey fumbled a KO vs WKU and has made several "bone-head" special teams plays...running into the kicker and running into the return guy on punts. He'll get his chance...but first, he's gotta get a little smarter.

That's what it was today... but, that's pretty cool when a QB and a WR (Tebow and Harvin) almost single-handedly beat your opponent. Personally, I'd prefer they go back to using the multitude of weapons we used in the 3 previous games. We completely ignored the conference's deepest and most talented WR corps today.

I guess. However I'd much rather him give the ball to a kid that can run a 4.2 than have our QB get hit 27 times.

At this point, he'd probably only get 5 or 6 carries a game. He'd fumble away Lord knows how many, and wouldn't get many carries by doing that. Then, at 156 lbs., he'd likely get knocked out of the game before he got 10. That's why James only gets limited carries... he's not big or durable enough to run the ball all day... and he's got 30 pounds on Rainey. CR just isn't ready, yet... Tebow can take the beating as big as he is, but I'd prefer he not.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the kid should get a starting spot. However I'd like to see him handled how WVU is handling Noel Devine. A few carries every game, a few receptions out of the slot or off a screen, a punt return, something.
He honestly looked bigger than 156, and much bigger than Brandon James, buy hey my T.V. could be messed up. However 156 didn't hinder him much in High School. Not that High School and the NCAA are comparable, but he played against some huge kids.
If your not going to play him, give him a red shirt.

I am thinking he could be injured if they continue to use him this way. It would prove to be a huge Gator loss. He can put up sufficient numbers through the air, and does not need to be used for additional rushing yards. They should take advantage of the talent absolutely spilling over in the offense. Next week, I am hoping we will see a different team, and I am betting we will!

i would like to see the game again, but from my perspective, we didnt run it enough. uf was getting 5-6 every run and then mullen would try and get fancy and run a reverse, 3 pass plays, etc. imo, this is one of mullen's faults. he is a great oc, but he is young and has to learn patience. if the D is giving you 5 yards up the middle, take it until they stop you. mullen tries to go for the big hit too much, which looks great when it hits, but om was adament on keeping everything in front and making uf drive the field. if you noticed, tebow had all day to throw a lot of times, but couldnt find anybody to throw to, leading to most of his incompletions. especially inside the 10, there is no reason to throw the ball on 1st down when we are dominating the los like we were. we rushed for nearly 300 and it could of been another 100 had we stuck with what was working. mullen's impatience cost us a couple of td's, but like i said, he is young and still a very good oc.
i didnt like all the side-side stuff today, as it was obviouls ole miss' main goal was to not let any uf player get on the perimeter. b/c of this, we were gettting what we wanted up the middle, and im not sure why we didnt keep doing it(not just with tebow, but with moore). sometimes, you just line up and say my guys are better than your guys and run it down their throat. we could of done that all day today and beat them into submission, but for some reason, we strayed away from what was working....downhill running.
on another note, david nelson single handidly cost us at least 3-4 big plays today. we really missed cooper and caldwell. he missed numerous blocks on the perimeter which would of sprung percy and dropped a big pass over the middle. it is amazing how much we missed the perimeter blocking of caldwell and cooper.
finally, kyle jackson needs to find his way to the bench and fast. he is terrible, not even sure how he is 2nd team, much less a starter. once again, he cost us points by his bad angles....this guy has the worst nose for the ball that i have ever seen from a fs.
p.s. the hit major put on the kid on the sidelines was biiiiigggg. it was right in front of me and even my wife said, "man, you could hear that one." that is our free safety.

oh, back to the topic of this thread, here is a quote from an ole miss defensive player after the game:
"It's frustrating for a defense even though we have played a lot of teams like that this year," junior defensive back Dustin Mouzon said. "I have to commend Tim Tebow because he is like a brick wall. I came up to hit him and I kind of got hurt."

I'm sorry, if you can't trust Moore to run out the clock...and you're willing to risk your season with an injury to Tebow...take him off scholarship then.
I know I'm still steamed with Mullen, but I really do think some of Moore's trouble is the result of how the plays are called. We never seem to get him in a play when the defense is a bit off guard. They always seem to expect the run, and he ends up looking less effective than he really is.

I agree; and I've really liked how Moore has looked this season. But, with any tailback, you have to give him enough touches to be effective. Nobody rips off 5-10 yards on every carry, but they carry often enough to AVERAGE that. It didn't seem like we had much misdirection or many play-fakes going on at all. I honestly didn't know if Mullen had made the trip, it was so uncharacteristic of our offensive calls.

I wish South Carolina had Tebow. He is a freak.
However, my point is that, over the course of a season, Tebow is going to get beat up absorbing so many hits from running the ball so much. It's hard for a QB to do that. Eventually, that could end up coming back to haunt Florida.

Its been said already but Moore was a bit banged up.
Normally you wont see TT run it that much.
Ole miss played a tight zone for most of the game, mixing in some blitzes and disguising coverages. The bigger issue of why TT didnt have a huge passing game was that the Gator O-line played horrible. With a rush of 3, as the Gators saw several times, Tebow should have all day to wait for one of the speedsters to find a soft spot in the zone. He didnt get that today.

Meyer won't let Rainey see the field consistently until he proves that he can block for the QB. Also, Rainey's hands have been very questionable when he has been in and he has fumbled away more than a few balls. Bo Williams has been banged up, is having trouble learning the playbook, and isn't really impressing at all in practice. Meyer knows what he's doing and there is a reason these guys aren't seeing the field more. Now I will say that I still don't know why we aren't giving the ball to Kestahn Moore more. He has held onto the ball well and his burst through the hole this year has been excellent. He was dinged up yesterday, so that is understandable, but in general, I feel like Moore would benefit from a few more touches.

Kestahn Moore isn't the greatest of blockers, but he sees the field a plenty.

I don't disagree that Tebow shouldn't be running the ball 27 times a game. I completely agree, especially given the fact that the running game up the middle was open and our running backs were hitting the holes well and gaining 5-10 yards every carry up the middle. I'm just saying it's easier to look back now and say "Tebow ran too much" when we have the comfort of a "W" on the record. Had we lost, I doubt the topic of Tebow running the ball 27 times would have come up. This is a good thing to have to talk about.

I gotta tell ya GH...Newton is as much of a stud as Tebow is. I really think it would be a good idea for Meyer to use him a little more often, esp when Meyer needs some one to pound it for short yardage. You know, give Tebow about 2 or 3 less bruises:thumpsup:

You mean 2 or 3 less bruises over the course of his career right?

That's a pretty good idea!! Newton at 245#s could move a pile...he's not as strong as Tebow...heck, only a couple of D-lineman are as strong as Tebow...but Cam does have size and a little speed...I agree, that sounds like a good idea...you gonna call Mullen are do you want me to?;)

If Meyer does not go with a two Qb system next year I think Ill lay naked on Mullen's driveway until the decision is made.
I just hate to see all that talent sitting on the bench! Makes me sick.
Does Newton realize how much of a star he could be if he were to transfer somewhere else?

Why would y'all not want Tebow to have all of those carries? That's why you won the game. It obvious he can take the licks

I hope he carries it that much every game between now and the South Carolina/Florida game. That way Tebow might be dinged up by the time we play the Gators!!

Agreed. His bigger and a lil faster than Tebow. Has a very strong arm as well. I'd like to see him on the field a bit more.
A problem I see Florida having is mass transfers. There are simply too many stars sitting on the bench that would see the field elsewhere. For example Deonte Thompson. The kid runs a 4.28 and hasn't seen the field a lick all season. He'd either be starting or at least seeing the field anywhere else.
Major Wright should be starting.
Jeremy Finch is simply a beast, he needs to see the field a bit more.
John Brown and Torrey Davis, two beast on the D-Line have seen the filed very little if at all. Same with the 6-7 260 pound D-end Carlos Dunlap.
And I may sound like a broken record saying this, but the underrated steal we got in Chris Rainey also needs to play.
Don't be surprised if you don't see Florida in the top recruiting classes this year. Kids simply won't commit because they know they won't play. Especially the running backs.

He'd get the ball, and I'd hate to see him play against our secondary after being coached up by the ole ball coach next season.

Finch is out for the year with a broken leg. But I agree, he was phenomenal before the injury and I think he could have possibly started over AJ Jones at linebacker.

It's been rumored for the last week or two that Thompson is considering transferring to Miami, where most people thought he would commit before he pulled a mild surprise on signing day and signed with the Gators. Meyer said he was "very close" to playing Deonte Thompson this weekend and then stressed the importance of getting Caldwell and Cooper back and healthy.

Why anybody would want to go to Miami to play is beyond me. That program is in the dumps.

Honestly, I think Randy Shannon is a great coach and that program is back on it's way up. I just wish they would have kept Coker around till after 2008, because we play them next year.

Deonte squashed those rumors last week...said he was happy to be a Florida Gator and was eager to contribute. Said that he was likely to RS because he doesn't have the offense "down" yet. He's Bubba's replacement for next season.

Thoughts?
I just hate it when a man calls another man a stud.
