LSU football player from Jackson in trouble again

By Glenn Guilbeau

BATON ROUGE, LA. — LSU linebacker Derrick Odom of Jackson has been arrested for the second time in a month.

Odom, a red-shirt freshman at LSU who played for Callaway High School, was arrested on Monday and given a misdemeanor summons for damage to property by LSU Police after he and former LSU football player and track star Xavier Carter allegedly helped damage the car of LSU student Maria Bruton on Sept. 1.

Carter is believed to be out of the country, but police issued an arrest warrant for him as well on a felony count of simple criminal damage to property.

Odom is accused of ramming Bruton's 2002 Cavalier with his 6-foot-2, 212-pound body, according to Lawrence Rabalais of LSU Police.

"Odom attempted to kick in the window of the victim's car," Rabalais said today.

Rabalais called LSU football administrative assistants Mack Butler and Sam Nader Monday night and asked that they get Odom to come to the LSU Police office.

"He was here within an hour, and he cooperated," Rabalais said. "He was fine. He understood what had to be done."

As of this morning, it was not known if Odom was still on the LSU football team or if he had been suspended. LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said he would talk to LSU coach Les Miles about it today.

Nathan Fisher, who has represented Odom since his previous arrest, said he had not yet talked to Odom today and would be looking into the situation.

"He's in class right now," Fisher said.

On Aug. 23, Baton Rouge Police arrested and briefly jailed Odom on misdemeanor chargers after he allegedly drove his shoulder into an apartment door of an LSU student, damaged that student's vehicle and threatened the student and the student's father during an altercation in July.

Miles suspended Odom shortly after that arrest on Aug. 23. On Aug. 27, Odom apologized to the victims of this first incident and agreed to pay restitution, and the victims requested to the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's office that the charges be dropped. Odom has paid the victims more than $700, Fisher said. The District Attorney's office has not yet dropped those charges, however, and is looking into having Odom perform community service for the first arrest.

Miles lifted Odom's suspension on Sept. 10 and said on Sept. 12 that his decision was based on "research on his specifics and his background and what's gone on in those incidents that he was involved in.'

That research did not uncover the second incident on Sept. 1, but Rabalais said Bruton at first did not want to pursue charges. She did not decide to do so until Sept. 11.

Odom began his second week of practice back with the team on Monday afternoon before Miles found out about the latest arrest.

Carter did most of the damage to the vehicle, Rabalais said. He is accused of jumping up and down on the roof of Bruton's car. A third person, Steven Williams, is accused of kicking in the window on the driver's side, which Odom first tried to do. Williams received a warrant for misdemeanor damage to property.

Odom did not attempt to kick in the ladies window. The police report said that all Odom was "ram his body into her car". SO he pretty much ran into it on.

But he should still be off the team. He is just being a dumbass.

And somebody needs to tell Xavier Carter to get away from our football team. From what I have heard he is nothing but a huge thug. We do not need our players hanging around him.

Yeah, I read that earlier today. I don't look for Miles to keep Odom around much longer. Odom is the big loser in the long run. Let's give the scholarship to another highly talented young man that wants to represent LSU with class and get a great education. Sounds like Carter will eventually work his way into a prison somewhere. Sad story.
