On last night's radio show from Walkons Restaurant, Coach Miles was asked about the "pistol" offense that LSU runs and to explain the difference in the "pistol" and "shotgun" formations. Miles explained that in the pistol formation the quarterback takes the snap about three yards closer to the line of scrimmage than from the shotgun formation, but can run the same running plays he could run if he were under center, and he can still pass from the pistol formation as he could in the shotgun. (This was reported by Dandy Don)

Nevada has been running the "pistol" for years.

Sounds good....just 3 less yards we have to go to sack the QB:p;)

Seriously though, its obviously pretty effective. It'll be interesting to see how it works throughout this season and how DC's try to adjust.

Small problem (oh... I guess you better make that a large problem)...

Herman Johnson, 6' 7" 356 lbs. and Ciron Black, 6' 5" 320 lbs.

This is nothing new...Nevada invented this two plus years ago. Watch a boring pre Christmas day bowl game and you'll get a great breakdown of the X's and O's of this offense while they're trying to find something to talk about besides Nevada and whatever other team you care nothing about fighting it out in the Massengil Personal Hygeine bowl.

Nevada didn't invent this offense. The plays may be different, but the backfield allignment is much like the Notre Dame box and the single wing..... much like the spread option... It's all a single wing with more zone blocking assignments than were used in the past.

Memphis runs their spread offense almost out of the pistol.

The best pistol memphis has is a water gun.
