AUBURN -- Suspended running back Brad Lester said Wednesday that he had no plans to transfer and every intention of playing for Auburn this season.
The junior from Lilburn, Ga., told the Press-Register that he wanted to dispel rumors that had surrounded his status since August. But he said he could not share any details about the circumstances of his suspension.
Lester said he laughed at reports that he planned to leave Auburn for Georgia Southern. But he said the constant speculation about his status was taking a toll on him. Lester said his MySpace page has been littered with negative comments and one person even confronted him on his way to a class.
Lester said he appreciates the support from other fans. Asked if he would play again this season, Lester said, "Definitely."
Reporters, who are allowed to view only the first 15 minutes of practice, did not see Lester on the practice field Wednesday afternoon. He left the football complex in street clothes about 30 minutes before practice ended.
"He was out here," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said. "He left early. He's got a world history test this week and a physical geology test."
Lester was suspended for the Jan. 1 Cotton Bowl for undisclosed academic reasons. One day before Auburn's season opener against Kansas State, Tuberville announced that Lester was suspended indefinitely. Tuberville said there was no change in Lester's status Wednesday.
Auburn's running game has struggled without Lester. An injury to converted safety Tristan Davis last month further depleted Auburn's depth. The Tigers started the season with only two true tailbacks -- sophomore Ben Tate and redshirt freshman Mario Fannin. Fannin didn't play in the opener and fumbled twice in his debut on Saturday against South Florida.
"In the past few years, we've won on defense, kicking game and running the football, and this year our running game really has not been up to par," Tuberville said Tuesday. "And that's been pretty much the reason that we don't feel as good about this football team as probably we should."
Again, I dont think he is the savior of this team or season but you gotta love the depth at RB with him back!
